A House Divided Old Pete Stratton, a theater tycoon with some shadily earned millions, is a shrewd, tough patriarch who dominates and dictates the lives of his family. In quiet rebellion, his beautiful wife, Mary, becomes a secret drinker; his daughter, Yvonne, learns about life behind her father’s back. Only his son, Nick, a battle-scarred veteran of twenty-three, dares openly to defy his father. This is the backdrop for Tom T. Chamales’ extraordinary new novel. With power and humor, the bestselling author of Never So Few charts the rebellion of a son against the tyranny of his father and the shallow confines of a wealthy world. The conflict reaches a shattering climax when Nick falls in love with the beautiful and tragic Nora, and Old Pete determines to regain control of Nick’s future by revealing that the woman his son loves is the town’s highest priced call girl.... “A work marked by this writer’s passion and vividness....The novel carries us along with its compelling intensity.”—Los Angeles Times “A vivid, believable story...peopled with wonderful characters.”—Newark News “This is a big novel, almost any way you look at it—powerfully and luridly written—and a remarkable story of a passionate, hard-living Greek-American family in Chicago.”—Boston Sun Herald

Margaret Rose is a talented but nervous violinist given to bouts of stage fright and unrequited love; Webster Hale is a biologist who, on principle, refuses to kill animals in order to study them. In Angels Go Naked, a novel told in stories, Cornelia Nixon, a writer whose gift is apparent on every page, follows this vexed love story and the collision course they call their life together. Their connection is never in doubt, though Webster is appalled by the urban underbelly of Chicago, which Margy calls home. He refuses to have children because the earth is overrun with humans, and Margy feels compelled to expiate an early abortion by having a live child. Webster's gloomy view of global disaster threatens to triumph in the final story, as their close friend Calvin is dying of AIDS beside a moribund Lake Michigan. Meanwhile, the one child Webster has agreed to conceive appears destined for stillbirth because Margy herself was poisoned as a fetus by misguided medical intervention. At the end of this sad, funny, moving tale, there may be hope, as life and love prove unexpectedly resilient, even in the twenty–first century.

By the day, relationships between society men and women is in a declined state. To make matters worst in an attempt to address gender issues or problems, women have withdrawn themselves to one side of the circle, thinking this would help or make the platform on such society relationships better. But not at all, what we have here is a society that is becoming less functional because our approach to a need for gender balance is out of place. Therefore, in this book is an attempt to help both sexes achieve a form of balance, and to check the core problem suffered mostly by women, which is abuse, and not a lack of empowerment or others

Why do women always ask their man for an opinion of how a dress looks - and then ignore what he says? Why do they painstakingly inspect and try on dozens of shoes/dresses/handbags - and then buy the first one they looked at? Why do women say that love is more important than money, then judge how much a man loves her by the price of the engagement ring he buys her?

Is it right that, despite the promises of feminism, women’s bodies remain at the mercy of state, society and religion? Should a scantily clad woman, or a promiscuous one, be worth less than a fully covered woman, or a chaste one? Are being sexy and being smart really mutually exclusive? Can a woman be both body and brain? Victoria Bateman has confronted these questions with actions as well as words. She has appeared naked on national television, on stage, in art and at protests – using her body, as well as her brain, to deliver her message. In Naked Feminism, Bateman makes a compelling case for women’s bodily freedom, and explains why the current puritanical revival is so dangerous for women. Illustrating the swinging pendulum of bodily modesty through the ages, she takes us on a journey from the ancient civilisations of Egypt and Babylon, through the birth of Christianity and Islam, to the lax morals of the medieval period and the bawdiness of Chaucer and Shakespeare; to the clampdowns of the Puritans and later the Victorians and, more recently, to the re-veiling of the Middle East and the purity pledges of modern-day America. She ends with a plea: feminists must unite to challenge the repression of the female body, as only then can women be truly free.

Naked Agency written by Naminata Diabate and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-06 with History categories.

Across Africa, mature women have for decades mobilized the power of their nakedness in political protest to shame and punish male adversaries. This insurrectionary nakedness, often called genital cursing, owes its cultural potency to the religious belief that spirits residing in women's bodies can be unleashed to cause misfortune in their targets, including impotence, disease, and death. In Naked Agency, Naminata Diabate analyzes these collective female naked protests in Africa and beyond to broaden understandings of agency and vulnerability. Drawing on myriad cultural texts from social media and film to journalism and fiction, Diabate uncovers how women create spaces of resistance during socio-political duress, including such events as the 2011 protests by Ivoirian women in Côte d’Ivoire and Paris as well as women's disrobing in Soweto to prevent the destruction of their homes. Through the concept of naked agency, Diabate explores fluctuating narratives of power and victimhood to challenge simplistic accounts of African women's helplessness and to show how they exercise political power in the biopolitical era.

A Brief History Of Nakedness written by Philip Carr-Gomm and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with History categories.

As one common story goes, Adam and Eve, the first man and woman, had no idea that there was any shame in their lack of clothes; they were perfectly confident in their birthday suits among the animals of the Garden of Eden. All was well until that day when they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and went scrambling for fig leaves to cover their bodies. Since then, lucrative businesses have arisen to provide many stylish ways to cover our nakedness, for the naked human body now evokes powerful and often contradictory ideas—it thrills and revolts us, signifies innocence and sexual experience, and often marks the difference between nature and society. In A Brief History of Nakedness psychologist Philip Carr-Gomm traces our inescapable preoccupation with nudity. Rather than studying the history of the nude in art or detailing the ways in which the naked body has been denigrated in the media, A Brief History of Nakedness reveals the ways in which religious teachers, politicians, protesters, and cultural icons have used nudity to enlighten or empower themselves as well as entertain us. Among his many examples, Carr-Gomm discusses how advertisers and the media employ images of bare skin—or even simply the word “naked”—to garner our attention, how mystics have used nudity to get closer to God, and how political protesters have discovered that baring all is one of the most effective ways to gain publicity for their cause. Carr-Gomm investigates how this use of something as natural as nakedness actually gets under our skin and evokes complicated and complex emotional responses. From the naked sages of India to modern-day witches and Christian nudists, from Lady Godiva to Lady Gaga, A Brief History of Nakedness surveys the touching, sometimes tragic and often bizarre story of our relationships with our naked bodies.
