Hazewindus, M.W. When Women Interfere. Studies in the Role of Women in Herodotus' Histories. 2004 In his Histories, Herodotus presents several short stories that seem at odds with the main story and that are therefore sometimes dismissed as mere anecdotes. In this book, Dr. Hazewindus analyzes five of such short stories in order to establish their function in the work as a whole. In these short stories women play important roles. The author shows that these roles exhibit a pattern: women unexpectedly change from passive, silent characters into active, leading people who at times take a bloody revenge when they feel wronged. Women here turn the wheel of history. When the main story is resumed, they disappear again into the background. Nevertheless, the women stories give a unique colour to the Histories, and a proper understanding of them enriches our interpretation of Herodotus work.

An Ideal Husband written by Oscar Wilde and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-12 with Drama categories.

One of the nineteenth century's most successful and most frequently revived plays, An Ideal Husband has divided critics more than any other of Wilde's plays. Treating political intrigue, financial fraud, blackmail, scandal and spin, and the role of women in public life, it is a play which engaged with issues of vital importance to its late-Victorian audience, which continue to resonate today. Sos Eltis, a specialist in Victorian drama and its relation to women's issues, provides a stimulating new perspective on An Ideal Husband, through an introduction that looks at its relation with contemporary social purity campaigns, women's rights, and political scandals. The introduction also gives a substantial performance history, with particular reference to the play's film versions and the influential Peter Hall theatre production.

“An immaculately constructed page-turner that is also, miraculously, a redemptive meditation on loneliness and community” (Carrie Snyder, author of Girl Runner). The inhabitants of Edgewood Drive in the small Canadian town of Parkville seem to live simple, peaceful lives, but as the children attend elementary school and the senior ladies play Leisure League hockey, secrets and hardships and menaces lurk not far from the surface. This suspenseful novel takes us into a community and reveals the life and happiness—as well as the fear and sorrow—of those who call it home. “Interference is a terrific page-turner, but it’s also a haunting, powerful look at the way families and friendships entangle us all. Berry is a sharp-eyed, engaging writer, and she deftly captures the terrors, ruptures and intimacies of one seemingly ordinary neighborhood, always finding a precarious beauty in her characters’ lives. This is a book that is terrifying, startling, and very hard to put down.” —Rebecca Godfrey, author of Under the Bridge “Interference is tightly plotted and neatly executed, very nearly perfectly paced, and satisfyingly complex—but it is also escapism in its purest form, and a sheer delight to read.” —The Winnipeg Review

Be the star of a dating show? No thanks. But apparently, I can be persuaded by a pretty face. Agreeing to meet up with casting agent Sydney Meadows was supposed to be a means to an end. A way to give her the meeting her boss requested, but still say ‘no’ to her pitch. Look, I’ve never wanted the extras that come with an NHL career. Sponsorships, sure. Reality television? Hard no. Except—now that I’ve met the pixie redhead—I find myself agreeing...with one stipulation. She gets to be part of the show in whatever way that allows me to see her again. Twenty female “contestants” be damned. ** Interference is the first book in the Prescott Brothers series. Each book is a standalone, with no cliffhanger endings.
