When Can We Go Back To America written by Susan H. Kamei and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-07 with JUVENILE NONFICTION categories.

From Susan H. Kamei and Barry Denenberg, the award-winning author of Ali: An American Champion, comes an engaging new novel that narrates the oral history of Japanese incarceration during World War II, from the perspective of the young people affected. It's difficult to believe it happened here, in the Land of the Free: After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the United States government imprisoned more than one hundred and twenty thousand Japanese Americans living on the Pacific Coast in desolate concentration camps until the end of World War II just because of their race. In this book, the voices of those who lived through this experience are wrapped around the story of their incarceration and illuminate the frightening reality of this dark period in American history. Many of them were children and young adults at the time. Now, more than ever, this book is needed for all who care about what it means to be an American.

We Were Going To Win Or Die There written by Roy H. Elrod and has been published by University of North Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-15 with History categories.

In 1940, native West Texan Roy H. Elrod joined the Marine Corps. A few years later his unit, the 8th Marine Regiment, went into the fight at Guadalcanal, where he commanded a platoon of 37 mm gunners. They endured Japanese attacks, malarial tropical weather, and starvation rations. His combat leadership earned him a Silver Star and a battlefield promotion. On D-Day at Tarawa his platoon waded their 37 mm cannons ashore, each weighing nearly 1,000 pounds, through half a mile of bullet-laced surf to get to an island where the killing never stopped. His was the only platoon to get its guns ashore and into action that first day. At Saipan, Elrod commanded a platoon of 75 mm halftracks, but he was riddled with shrapnel from an enemy artillery shell that took him out of the war. Fred H. Allison interviewed Elrod, drew upon wartime letters home, and provided annotations to the narrative of this young Marine infantry officer, a job that had an extremely low survival potential.

After surviving imprisonment in a Siberian Gulag work camp and near-death illness and starvation on their courageous and harrowing three-and-a-half-year odyssey through Russia, Uzbekistan, Persia, and the Nazi submarine-infested Indian Ocean, they finally secured freedom in Palestine in 1943"--Cover.

Where We Going Daddy written by Jean-Louis Fournier and has been published by Other Press, LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-11 with Family & Relationships categories.

Jean-Louis Fournier did not expect to have a disabled child. He certainly did not expect to have two. But that is precisely what happened to this wry French humorist, and his attempts to live and cope with his Mathieu and Thomas, both facing extremely debilitating physical and mental challenges, is the subject of this brave and heartbreaking book. Fournier recalls the life he imagined having with his sons—but his boys will never really grow up, and he mourns the loss of every memory he thought he’d have. Though a devoted father, he does not shy away from exploring the limits of his love, the countless times he is filled with frustration and disappointment with no relief in sight. Mathieu and Thomas can barely communicate, and each in turn repeats learned phrases, such as “Where we going, Daddy?” (a favorite in the car) in what feels to Fournier to be an eternal loop. In WhereWe Going, Daddy? Fournier reveals everything, and that is perhaps his most remarkable quality. He does not hide behind a mask of cliché, but gives voice to the darkness that comes with disability, and the rare moments of light. Through short, powerful vignettes Jean-Louis manages his grief with cynicism and humor. For parents of disabled children, this book will offer some relief from the courage they must garner every day, a chance to let down their guard, laugh at themselves, and embrace even the ugly emotions they feel. For the rest of us, it’s an unsettling and heartfelt glimpse into an otherwise unimaginable life.
