Social justice and social policy in Scotland offers a critical engagement with the state of social policy in one of the devolved nations of the UK, a decade after the introduction of devolution. Promoting greater social justice has been held up as a key vision of successive Scottish administrations since devolution began. It is argued throughout this important book that the analysis of Scottish social policy must therefore be located in wider debates around social injustice as well as about how the devolution process affects the making, implementation and impact of social policy. Social justice and social policy in Scotland focuses on a diverse range of topics and issues, including income inequalities, work and welfare, criminal justice, housing, education, health and poverty, each reflecting the themes of social inequality and social justice. This book will be essential reading for academics, researchers, policy makers and practitioners as well as students of social policy and of society in Scotland and other devolved nations.

The lure of India pervades this book, as do the charms of Seil Island and Scotland's Western Seaboard. There are tales of modest adventure and mild disipation, but the author also makes an attempt to examine the evolution of those seemingly incomparable regions during the eventful half century he has known them. The amazing renaissance of India is compared with efforts in both India and Britain to address development, poverty and exclusion. The upper middle-class war babies of Britain are described as ultimate legatees of the most fortunate empire in the modern world. Preceding generations enjoyed imperial prosperity, but most fortunate were those born to inherit the wealth of empire while avoiding the hardships of war; to enjoy or squander that inheritance as the world struggled to achieve a more equitable distribution of good things. Sadly, and perhaps inevitably, destrying some of those good things in the process. Just as imperial wealth survived the empire for a generation, so elements of graciuous pre-war tourism briefly survived the calamity of the second world war: this phenomenon too is examined in accounts of travels in Europe before the rise of travel by large numbers. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland have hardly faced the problems of the Mediterranean coast, but they too have shared the dilemmas of prosperity versus conservation. An essentially frivolous observer reports some of his experiences, and examines the serious issues of development, globalization, and national aspirations. The citizen of a very small country gives some account of how these momentous matters have been observed from a tiny island.

The Politics Today Companion To The British Constitution written by Colin Pilkington and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09-11 with Law categories.

This companion to the British Constitution was born out of the view that the tendency for modern political studies to concentrate on processes rather than structures results in a failure to understand basic political terminology. Readers coming to politics for the first time often do not have the basic vocabulary with which to understand the subject. This book is an attempt to provide that basic vocabulary. An introductory survey of concepts relating to the constitutional framework leads to a glossary in which basic terminology is clearly defined and extensively cross-referenced. The glossary can therefore be used as a reference to find the meaning of a word or expression, as an aid to developing a newcomer's ideas or to provide illustrative material for essays.

Exploring social policy in the 'new' Scotland is the first book to integrate the description and analysis of social policy in Scotland since devolution in 1999. It has been designed to support the delivery of social policy and related courses in Scotland itself but also to appeal to students on social policy, politics, sociology, public policy and regional studies courses across the United Kingdom, on which devolution and its impact are examined. The contributors are all highly experienced researchers and academics from across the social sciences. The book therefore presents a variety of perspectives and approaches with which to consider the key issues. Up-to-date material on a wide range of social policy topics, including work and welfare, health and social work, criminal justice, education, and urban policy, means that the book will be valuable to academics, researchers, policy makers and practitioners, as well as students.

Youth Justice And Child Protection written by Malcolm Hill and has been published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Social Science categories.

This book is an examination of recent developments in the areas of youth justice and child protection. It investigates how well young people and the societies in which they live are served by judicial and service systems. Consideration is given to those in care - in young offenders' institutions, foster families and residential homes - as well as those living with their families. A broad range of international experts discuss the largely segregated youth justice and children's legal and service systems in England and Wales, other parts of Western Europe and the US, and compare these with Scotland's integrated system. The implications of these arrangements are considered for the rights of children and parents on the one hand and society on the other. The contributors also provide insights into the rationale for current and proposed policies, as well as the efficacy of different systems. This book will be an important reference for policy-makers, social workers, lawyers, magistrates and equivalent decision makers, health professionals, carers, and all those working in youth justice and child protection. It is highly relevant for academics and students interested in children, citizenship, youth crime, child welfare and state-family relations.

The Funding Of Political Parties In Britain written by Keith D. Ewing and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987-05-21 with Political Science categories.

This study of the way in which political parties are funded examines in detail the corporate funding of the Conservative Party and trade union funding of the Labour Party. In so doing the author considers the legal implications of this activity. The election expenditures of the parties come under scrutiny, as does the role of the state in contributing to their financial well-being. The concluding chapters consider arguments for more extensive public funding of the political parties - as proposed by both the Houghton Committee in 1976 and the Hansard Society in 1981. In considering this issue the author draws heavily on Swedish experience, and throughout the book reference is made, where appropriate, to developments in other jurisdictions, including the United States, Canada and West Germany. This important subject is addressed from a legal perspective, though the book is written in a clear and forthright style accessible to lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
