Outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) have been studied for many years throughout the Indo-West Pacific region and although many explanatory hypotheses have been proposed we do not understand why outbreaks of this starfish occur on some reefs while, on other nearby reefs, this starfish maintains a stable, low population density. On the Great Barrier Reef and elsewhere, most starfish research has centered on establishing the scale of Acanthaster outbreaks and the effect of Acanthaster predation on the coral reef community. The giant triton (Charonia tritonis) and other members of the genus Charonia are known predators of many species of starfish but there are few examples of other species predominantly preying on starfish apart from other starfish. Dr Robert Endean proposed that predation on starfish plays an important role in starfish population stability and discussed the possible causes of Acanthaster outbreaks with particular emphasis on the removal by humans of the predators of adult and juvenile starfish. While it is recognized that predation can determine the spatial patterns of natural communities and can represent powerful selective pressure in the evolution of prey adaptation, the role of natural predators in maintaining high prey diversity, and the possible survival strategy of rarity in the coral reef community is unclear with respect to either starfish, their predators, or their prey. The giant triton is an extremely beautiful shell and in many parts of the third world, it is still being collected in large numbers and sold to tourists as ornaments. As you admire the beautiful shell, spare a thought for the hungry mollusk that died. And don't forget, they live on starfish. At present, little is known of any aspect of the triton's ecology despite its obvious importance in controlling starfish numbers. It is very important to protect this shell by listing on Appendix 2 of the Convention in Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) Treaty.

Where S The Starfish written by Barroux and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-07 with categories.

Barroux tackles ocean pollution in the stunning follow-up to the critically acclaimed Where's the Elephant? - recommended by The Guardian, Sunday Times and The Sun. Find the whale, the clownfish and the starfish on every page - until the piles of rubbish start to make it much too difficult. Both a Where's Wally-style spotting game and a striking work of art, this almost wordless tale puts the power back in the hands (or fins) of the natural world, with a boldly beautiful twist ending. With an insight and warmth comparable to Frann Preston-Gannon's The Journey Home, Barroux has created an astoundingly powerful modern classic that promises to be remembered for generations to come. The perfect way to introduce the topic of the environment to boys and girls aged 3 and over. Barroux's books include Uncle John and the Giant Cherry Tree, which won him the 2005 Enfantaisie Award, and the extraordinary Line of Fire, Diary of An Unknown Soldier which has received widespread critical acclaim. In 2015 Barroux won the first Parents, Babies, a Book competition for his work Chuut! which will be given to every newborn baby in the north of France.

"Among the most beautiful, as well as the most common, of the marine animals which are to be met with upon our coasts are the jelly-fish and the starfish. Scarcely any one is so devoid of the instincts either of the artist or of the naturalist as not to have watched these animals with blended emotions of the aesthetic and the scientific--feeling the beauty while wondering at the organization. How many of us who live for most of the year in the fog and dust of large towns enjoy with the greater zest our summer's holiday at the seaside? And in the memories of most of us is there not associated with the picture of breaking waves and sea-birds floating indifferently in the blue sky or on the water still more blue, the thoughts of many a ramble among the weedy rocks and living pools, where for the time being we all become naturalists, and where those who least know what they are likely to find in their search are most likely to approach the keen happiness of childhood? If so, the image of the red sea-stars bespangling a mile of shining sand, or decorating the darkness of a thousand grottoes, must be joined with the image, no less vivid, of those crystal globes pulsating with life and gleaming with all the colours of the rainbow, which are perhaps the most strange, and certainly in my estimation the most delicately lovely creatures in the world"--Introduction.
