On The Nature Of Ecological Paradox written by Michael Charles Tobias and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-18 with Nature categories.

This work is a large, powerfully illustrated interdisciplinary natural sciences volume, the first of its kind to examine the critically important nature of ecological paradox, through an abundance of lenses: the biological sciences, taxonomy, archaeology, geopolitical history, comparative ethics, literature, philosophy, the history of science, human geography, population ecology, epistemology, anthropology, demographics, and futurism. The ecological paradox suggests that the human biological–and from an insular perspective, successful–struggle to exist has come at the price of isolating H. sapiens from life-sustaining ecosystem services, and far too much of the biodiversity with which we find ourselves at crisis-level odds. It is a paradox dating back thousands of years, implicating millennia of human machinations that have been utterly ruinous to biological baselines. Those metrics are examined from numerous multidisciplinary approaches in this thoroughly original work, which aids readers, particularly natural history students, who aspire to grasp the far-reaching dimensions of the Anthropocene, as it affects every facet of human experience, past, present and future, and the rest of planetary sentience. With a Preface by Dr. Gerald Wayne Clough, former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and President Emeritus of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Foreword by Robert Gillespie, President of the non-profit, Population Communication.

"Picturing the True Form investigates the long-neglected visual culture of Daoism, China’s primary indigenous religion, from the tenth through thirteenth centuries with references to both earlier and later times. In this richly illustrated book, Shih-shan Susan Huang provides a comprehensive mapping of Daoist images in various media, including Dunhuang manuscripts, funerary artifacts, and paintings, as well as other charts, illustrations, and talismans preserved in the fifteenth-century Daoist Canon. True form (zhenxing), the key concept behind Daoist visuality, is not static, but entails an active journey of seeing underlying and secret phenomena. This book’s structure mirrors the two-part Daoist journey from inner to outer. Part I focuses on inner images associated with meditation and visualization practices for self-cultivation and longevity. Part II investigates the visual and material dimensions of Daoist ritual. Interwoven through these discussions is the idea that the inner and outer mirror each other and the boundary demarcating the two is fluid. Huang also reveals three central modes of Daoist symbolism—aniconic, immaterial, and ephemeral—and shows how Daoist image-making goes beyond the traditional dichotomy of text and image to incorporate writings in image design. It is these particular features that distinguish Daoist visual culture from its Buddhist counterpart."

Historians have claimed that when social stability returned to Korea after a series of devastating invasions by the Japanese and Manchus around the turn of the seventeenth century, the late Chos n dynasty was a period of unprecedented economic and cultural renaissance. This book questions this age-old belief by claiming that true-view landscape and genrepaintings were most likelyadopted to propagandizesocial harmony under Chos n rule and to justify the status, wealth, and land grabs of the ruling class. This volume also documents the popularity and misunderstanding of art books from China and, most controversially, Korean enthusiasm for artistic programs from Edo Japan, thus challenging academic stereotypes and nationalistic tendencies in scholarship. As the first truly interdisciplinary study of Korean art, A New Middle Kingdom illuminates the reality of the late Chos n society that its visual art attempted hide.

This play, first published in 1935, is a classic love story first written in the thirteenth century, and came to be seen in China as the play. It was banned by the authorities, yet ran into thousands of editions and no classical scholar would fail to recite these very passages because of the beauty of the language. It contains much useful information about life in China at the time, as well as the relationship between cultural traditions.

Published in conjunction with a December 1999 symposium held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and an exhibition, "The Artist as Collector: Masterpieces of Chinese Painting from the C.C. Wang Family Collection." Twelve contributions give dissenting opinions regarding a book recently published by The Museum titled Along the Riverbank, which seeks to attribute the painting called "Riverbank" to the 10th-century landscape master Dong Yuan--an attribution that would call for the rewriting of early Chinese painting history. This volume contains 239 bandw illustrations to support the contributors' efforts to explain their opinions. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
