From Karen Siplin, the author of His Insignificant Other and Such a Girl, comes a passionate and edgy love story about a savvy female celebrity photographer and a small-town white contractor that asks, "Where does a black woman born and raised in the big city go when she wants to escape, and what happens when she gets there?" After one too many run-ins with irate A-list celebrities and their bodyguards on the streets of Los Angeles, paparazza Jimi Anne Hamilton has decided to throw in the towel. But when she planned to ride her BMW K 1200 motorcycle from California to New York, she didn't count on having her cross-country adventure interrupted by a motorcycle thief. After the brutal attack, which sees both her motorcycle and camera equipment stolen, she finds herself left with only her helmet, a few clothes, and a bag of money she swiped from her attacker. Disillusioned and hurt, Jimi chooses to recuperate in a nearby town where she meets Caleb Atwood, a local contractor fighting his own demons. Jimi and Caleb make a mismatched pair: black and white, highbrow and low. But in Caleb, Jimi believes she has found someone who feels as much of an outsider as she is. With Whiskey Road, Karen Siplin again succeeds in giving readers a story about opposites who manage to see what no one else can -- that they're right for each other.

Rich Magi, son of an Estonian immigrant father, writes frankly about the legacy of alcoholism he inherited from a family that never talked about its painful past - a grandmother who never calls ahead and comes on the night train, a father who seems not to notice his son, a mother who martyrs herself. He writes of drinking, his own despair and, in an ultimate burst of healing and hope, the end of a fifty-year addiction.

Parkey Sharkey was an infamous hard-drinking cab driver, scofflaw and pugilist from Palo Alto, California. Many actually believed that journalist Paul Coates of the LA Daily Mirror invented Parkey Sharkey to keep his column alive in the late 1950s. Which was not true at all. Parkey's letters and cards were 100 percent legit. And yes, he actually appeared on Groucho Marx's "You Bet Your Life" more than once. Parkey's "Whiskey Road" was originally a self-published and self-distributed pamphlet, put out in 1961. This new 60th Anniversary annotated edition includes: An introduction by author and historian Jon Kinyon, additional letters from Parkey Sharkey to newspaper columnists, digital painting of Parkey and his taxi on "Whiskey Road" on the cover, very minor editorial corrections (most of the original bad grammar and formatting was left as originally published). As Harry Lee "Memphis" Ward said in 1957, "Parkey's greatness stems from his ability to write with a vital and human ruggedness. His illiterate writings touch the mind and heart of everyone."

Whiskey Road chronicles two generations of women who use every faculty at their disposal to carve out meaningful lives in the oppressive south of the Depression era. Lillian Taylor Jackson struggles to rectify her past as a wealthy plantation owner's son's paramour in Virginia when it comes home to roost after the murder of her loving husband Denver at the hands of a notorious hate group. As a single mother of two daughters, Goldie and Rose, she must find a way to navigate the heated political climate, complex racial tensions, and social hierarchy in Aiken, South Carolina, the small town hotbed where rum-running turf wars run like deep waters underneath the wealthy white elite stronghold. As tough as life is, Lillian appears to have everything under control-until Goldie falls for the notorious rum-runner Jake Freeman while fending off the advances of Mayor Zachary Stanton, Jr.-pushing Lillian to confront the past she'd hoped would remain forever buried knowing that doing so could lead to her family's ultimate destruction. Whiskey Road is a convincing look into the annals of the fight for equality in the old South during the Prohibition era, where people of both races are caught between unwritten social and legal constructs, their conscience, and a world bringing change with the force of a harshly indifferent tornado.

At six o'clock on Thursday mornings, a group of old timers always met at the Hardee's on Whiskey Road- the one next to the Home Depot. If they didn't have nothin' else, they knew where to get a hot cup of coffee with a few others who'd also been around the block. On the eve of the town's biggest local high school football game of the season, the men learn that their dear friend, Rick, has passed away. In remembering him, the small group reflects on their own upbringings, families, desires, regrets, and dreams.
