Ah, the whiskey sour, one of the oldest cocktails that we still know and love today. It was once just a simple cocktail but has grown to be more complex as time went by. Nowadays, a surprising element is added to contribute to its overall appeal, an egg white. That's right, an egg white freshly cracked from the shell. Though this may seem scary for some, that fear will ultimately fade away as you get to taste it. People love it for its creamy texture, a hint of sourness and its booze. The whiskey sour dates back to 1862 when it was written by Jerry Thomas in the book, "The Bartender's Guide" but its inception go way back in the 1700s on naval ships to battle some nasty issues like malnutrition and scurvy. It was a simple recipe back then with just three ingredients: a base spirit, citrus juice and water. Over time, sugar was added to balance the flavors and eventually, the egg white element was incorporated into the whiskey sour cocktail. The drink became so popular that variations sprouted everywhere, whether using different alcohols or adding some fruit to it. One of which is the peach whiskey sour. The sweetness of the peach really plays well with the tanginess of the lemon and the heat of the whiskey, resulting in a delicious package. A few months from now, specifically on August 25, is the National Whiskey Sour Day so be sure to try this out, or if you can't wait that long, gather your ingredients and tools and whip it up now!

Certain cocktails carry societal connotations and cultural meaning. Some drinks are regional symbols such as the mint julep, which is inextricably tied to the Kentucky Derby. Classic drinks like the old fashioned or the Manhattan tend to denote a more sophisticated or mature drinker, whereas wine coolers and tropical cocktails often appeal to those who prefer lighter and fruitier alcoholic drinks. Enter the whiskey sour. A cocktail from the sour family, the iconic drink is usually made with bourbon whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar. While its ingredients are strikingly similar to those in an old fashioned, the whiskey sour is far less revered and, in certain circles, maligned for its sweetness. The Whiskey Sour elevates the reputation of the classic cocktail by exploring its rich history— starting in the 1600s with punch, the predecessor to sours, and bringing the reader through to the twentieth century when the whiskey sour was well-established. Seasoned mixologists and new cocktail enthusiasts will be educated about the development of the traditional recipe and encouraged to make their own creations by incorporating modern riffs, syrup additions, and fun enhancements. Part historical narrative, part recipe book, this friendly and approachable guide challenges the stigma surrounding the cocktail as a drink for unrefined tastes and illustrates the elegant, romantic, and complex facets of the whiskey sour—a perfectly sweet, tart, and balanced cocktail.

Rediscover the lost art of cocktailing. Of all the skills you might acquire in life, the ability to make a good cocktail is a never going to be a waste of your time. No lover will complain when you present them a well-iced Negroni as they walk through your door; no house-guest will complain at the suggestion of a round of Gin Sours. To cocktail was coined as a verb by F Scott Fitzgerald in 1928. This amateur guide to cocktailing, embodies Fitzgerald's Golden Age spirit while giving it a thoroughly modern makeover. Expressly structured for the amateur, the first chapter of this book shows how just 6 bottles are needed for 25 classic cocktails. From this simple start the book brings a wealth of cocktail recipes and knowledge, all the while reminding you of the pleasures of cocktailing chez toi. From a Pean to the Spritz and a rehabilitation of the Bromx, through cocktail history and cocktailonomics, to go-to lists like 'The Top 5 Girly Drinks', The Spirits is a perfect mix. Informative recipes blended with whimsy and anecdote, are given a dash of fun, and finished with a twist of brilliantly wry humour.

Winner of the 2015 James Beard Award for Best Beverage Book and the 2015 IACP Jane Grigson Award. A revolutionary approach to making better-looking, better-tasting drinks. In Dave Arnold’s world, the shape of an ice cube, the sugars and acids in an apple, and the bubbles in a bottle of champagne are all ingredients to be measured, tested, and tweaked. With Liquid Intelligence, the creative force at work in Booker & Dax, New York City’s high-tech bar, brings readers behind the counter and into the lab. There, Arnold and his collaborators investigate temperature, carbonation, sugar concentration, and acidity in search of ways to enhance classic cocktails and invent new ones that revolutionize your expectations about what a drink can look and taste like. Years of rigorous experimentation and study—botched attempts and inspired solutions—have yielded the recipes and techniques found in these pages. Featuring more than 120 recipes and nearly 450 color photographs, Liquid Intelligence begins with the simple—how ice forms and how to make crystal-clear cubes in your own freezer—and then progresses into advanced techniques like clarifying cloudy lime juice with enzymes, nitro-muddling fresh basil to prevent browning, and infusing vodka with coffee, orange, or peppercorns. Practical tips for preparing drinks by the pitcher, making homemade sodas, and building a specialized bar in your own home are exactly what drink enthusiasts need to know. For devotees seeking the cutting edge, chapters on liquid nitrogen, chitosan/gellan washing, and the applications of a centrifuge expand the boundaries of traditional cocktail craft. Arnold’s book is the beginning of a new method of making drinks, a problem-solving approach grounded in attentive observation and creative techniques. Readers will learn how to extract the sweet flavor of peppers without the spice, why bottling certain drinks beforehand beats shaking them at the bar, and why quinine powder and succinic acid lead to the perfect gin and tonic. Liquid Intelligence is about satisfying your curiosity and refining your technique, from red-hot pokers to the elegance of an old-fashioned. Whether you’re in search of astounding drinks or a one-of-a-kind journey into the next generation of cocktail making, Liquid Intelligence is the ultimate standard—one that no bartender or drink enthusiast should be without.
