When southern women remove their gloves, they speak their minds. The ten timely and provocative essays in Taking Off the White Gloves represent the collective wisdom of some of the finest scholars on women's history in the American South. On the eve of the thirtieth anniversary of the Southern Association for Women Historians, this volume brings together some of the outstanding lectures delivered by distinguished members of the association over the past fifteen years. Spanning four centuries of women's experiences in the South, the topics featured in Taking Off the White Gloves range from Native American sexuality and European conquest to woman suffrage in the South, from black women's protest history to the status of women in the historical profession at the end of the twentieth century. Despite diverse subject matter, these rich essays share a number of important qualities. They take an integrative approach, combining literary analysis, social history, cultural interpretation, labor history, popular culture, and oral history. Embracing the distinctiveness of the southern past and women's experiences within that past, they also recognize the inextricability of critical categories such as sexuality and gender, race and gender, and women and work. Finally, these essays emphasize the authors' commitment to the belief that the personal is political; they reveal the subtle and not so subtle ways that women transform theory into practice. Taking Off the White Gloves invites a new understanding of the complexities that surround the history of southern women across race, class, place, and time. A model of innovative and imaginative scholarly historical writing, this book provides fertile ground for young scholars and is sure to inspire new research. This thought- provoking volume has much to offer scholars and students, as well as the general reader.

Livre Bilingue : English / Français My life as a retired amateur boxer with a passion for analog black and white photography, brought me there. For two years, as a photographer, I traveled regularly to Bolton, one of the hardest boxing underworlds England has to offer. The Bare Fist Boxing Association's events are a tough place without gloves, where honor and respect stand tall. Here I was with my camera by the ring, capturing the pain, flying banded fists, bleeding cuts and swollen faces. For millenniums, this discipline has been practiced in various ways, but for over a hundred years it was banned from common sight. Deemed illegal, the fights found refuge in barns, depots, hidden backyards and many more dark places, yet they never stopped. Now tolerated again in England, bare-knuckle boxing is making a strong comeback, changing the perception of the English Boxing world.. Those blood splattered days in Bolton, resuming more than 150 fights and 3000 shots, took me so close to the fighters I could smell their blood and sweat. I saw brave men pushed to their limits, fighting through extremely brutal or even bone-crushing victories and defeats. My camera lens captured unique perspectives, waves of intense rage, bursts of madness, flashes of despair and relief but most of all, an unmatched mutual respect. This unusual family took me in and I tried to give back the justice it deserves with this selection of chosen photographs. Welcome to the BARE-KNUCKLE world, one that never died, one that will forever live. *

During the 1970s and 1980s, after the Royal Commission on the Status of Women made its far-reaching recommendations, the volunteer Ontario Committee on the Status of Women went head-to-head with the Ontario government of Premier William Davis to fully implement equality for women in Ontario. Areas of concern were in employment, pay and benefits, child care and reproduction rights, education and training, family law, pensions, politics and the civil service, and human rights generally. Members of this committed organization tell the stories of how they came together, how they organized and lobbied for change, how they collaborated with other groups, how the issues changed, and what the work means for women in Ontario today.

These four fictional monologues look at different approaches to defining what makes a Mason. ""Brother Harry Truman"", the only potential dual character piece, looks at the timelessness of Masonry from the point of view of the former U.S. President. ""White Gloves"" compares the meaning of Lodge gloves to the gloves of the speaker's alcoholic fisherman father. ""Outside The Door"" is about how Masonry motivates one to step out of themselves to do difficult things. ""Inside The Heart"" looks at how a group of soldiers kept Masonry alive while stationed abroad. They can be performed for the public, but are also a perfect length for lodge meetings. Playwright Aaron Joy is a music writer who has been involved in Masonry in his home of Portland, Maine. His theater work spans on and off stage in the U.S. and Japan, including directing Off-Broadway and tech at San Francisco's Jon Sims Center. While his music work includes owning his own label, Roman Midnight Music, and extensive blogging and podcasting and playing.

The Gloves Off Economy written by Annette D. Bernhardt and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Business & Economics categories.

Across the United States, increasing numbers of employers are breaking, bending, or evading long-established laws and standards designed to protect workers, from the minimum wage to job safety standards to the right to organize. This "gloves-off economy," no longer confined to a marginal set of sweatshops and fly-by-night small businesses, is sending shock waves into every corner of the low-wage labor market. In the process, employers who play by the rules are under growing pressure to follow suit, intensifying the search for low-cost business strategies across a wide range of industries and ratcheting up into ever higher reaches of the labor market. Although other books have touched on pieces of this problem, The Gloves-off Economy is the first to provide a comprehensive, integrated analysis--and quite a disturbing one. This book examines a range of gloves-off practices, the workers who are affected by them, and strategies for enforcing workplace standards. The editors, four respected labor scholars, have brought together economists, sociologists, labor attorneys, union strategists, and other experts to offer varying perspectives on both the problem and the creative solutions currently being explored in a wide range of communities and industries. Annette Bernhardt, Heather Boushey, Laura Dresser, and Chris Tilly and the volume's other authors combine rigorous analysis with a stirring call to renew worker protections in the twenty-first century.
