One of the world’s most provocative philosophers attacks the obsession with comprehensive intellectual systems—the perceived need for a world view. Our world has been maintaining a destructive path for humankind with our continued use of force to resolve human issues. We are continuing to move downhill toward greater violence. To stop violence, we must build healthier personal and social worldviews. A quest for the truth beyond the self, community, and our worldviews needs to be implemented. We will need to improve our ability to think rationally. Most of all, we will need to learn how to intelligently use God's gift of freedom. Since our personal worldviews are our standards of reference for truth for designing and building our worldviews, we can only reach for and estimate the truth through non-threatening dialogue. We have been conditioned to forcefully defend fixed worldviews, which are not healthy. Healthier worldviews are needed to implement non-violent, intentional change to the worldviews of every individual, every organization, every community, and every dominating system. Healthier worldviews would lead to an integrated translormatiun of science, religion, education, and government. All worldviews need to be more inclusive of relevant information and be internally consistent. They need to represent the truth of reality as well as the truth in reality. Each personal worldview is that person's standard of reference for truth, whenever that person makes a decision. We tend to fix our worldviews with claims of certainty, rather than stable assumptions of truth. Such fixed standards are not adequate to bring peace to this world. We must learn to intentionally look beyond these fixed standards to estimate and seek the truth of what those worldviews ought to be in the future. No information should be seen as value free and independent of morality. We all use our personal worldviews when making moral decisions. Our worldviews all need to change periodically in order to incorporate continuing non-violent intentional change to our beliefs and values. A meaningful worldview builds a representation of reality upon a set of assumptions of truth. Reason demands non-contradiction, but it cannot promise a healthy worldview. Liberalism is so amorphous and pervasive that for most people in the West it is background noise, the natural state of affairs. But there are nooks and crannies in every society where the prevailing winds don't blow. Raymond Geuss grew up some distance from the cultural mainstream and recounts here the unusual perspective he absorbed: one in which liberal capitalism was synonymous with moral emptiness and political complacency. Not Thinking like a Liberal is a concise tour of diverse intellectual currents--from the Counter-Reformation and communism to pragmatism and critical theory--that shaped Geuss's skeptical stance toward liberalism. The bright young son of a deeply Catholic steelworker, Geuss was admitted in 1959 to an unusual boarding school on the outskirts of Philadelphia. Outside was Eisenhower's America. Inside Geuss was schooled by Hungarian priests who tried to immunize students against the twin dangers of oppressive communism and vapid liberal capitalism. From there Geuss went on to university in New York in the early days of the Vietnam War and to West Germany, where critical theory was experiencing a major revival. This is not a repeatable journey. In tracing it, Geuss reminds us of the futility of abstracting lessons from context and of seeking a universal view from nowhere. At the same time, he examines the rise and fall of major political theories of the past sixty years. An incisive thinker attuned to both the history and the future of ideas, Geuss looks beyond the horrors of authoritarianism and the shallow freedom of liberalism to glimpse a world of genuinely new possibilities.

This book completes a landmark six-volume translation of the major writings of Wilhelm Dilthey (1833–1911), a philosopher and historian of culture who continues to have a significant influence on philosophy, hermeneutics, and the theory of the human sciences. These volumes make available to English readers texts that represent the full range of Dilthey's work. The works in this volume present Dilthey's most deeply held views about philosophy and how it can guide human practices. System of Ethics (1890) argues that Humean sympathy motivates us only externally and must be replaced with the internally motivated fellow-feeling of solidarity that respects others as ends in themselves. The Essence of Philosophy (1907) demonstrates how philosophy has developed from its traditional metaphysical role to the epistemological and encyclopedic functions that ground and order the natural and human sciences. The work also discloses an orientational function of philosophy that is explored further in "The Types of World-View and Their Development" (1911). Philosophical world-views are important in that they address the existential needs and riddles that grow out of life experience and are not solved by any of the sciences. In addition, the book features three other significant essays. "Present Day Culture and Philosophy" (1898) concerns the challenges to philosophy posed by contemporary culture. "Dream" (1903) is about the thinkers portrayed in Raphael's School of Athens and Dilthey's worries about them breaking up into three divergent groups.
