When the problem of what to preach next Sunday raises its frowning head, solve it by calling on one of the hundreds of biblical characters standing in line at your study door, nearly beating it down with their clamorous "Take me! Take me!" Preaching on biblical personalities has an irresistible appeal, because audiences are more interested in people than in anything else. Jesus himself preached mainly about people ("a certain man had two sons..."); so there's no excuse for making the gospel dull -- and with the help of Bodo's book, preachers can add spice to the pulpit fare they serve up week after strenuous week. A Hitler refugee of Jewish ancestry, John R. Bodo was baptized Christian and graduated from the Lutheran Gymnasium in Budapest, Hungary, and the University of Geneva (Switzerland). He earned his MDiv degree from Union Theological Seminary. The author of several books, Bodo served as the pastor of Presbyterian churches in New Jersey, California, Washington, Utah, Iowa, and Ohio, and has also been Chairman of the Department of Practical Theology at San Francisco Theological Seminary and Chaplain and Professor of Religion at McAlester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The customary picture of the World War II era in California has been dominated by accounts of the Japanese American concentration camps, African Americans, and women on the home front. The Way We Really Were substantially enlivens this view, addressing topics that have been neglected or incompletely treated in the past to create a more rounded picture of the wartime situation at home. Exploring the developments brought to fruition by the war and linking them to their roots in earlier decades, contributors address the diversity of the musical scene, which arose from a cross-pollination of styles brought by Okies, blacks, and Mexican migrants. They examine increased political involvement by women, Hollywood's response to the war, and the merging of business and labor interests in the Bay Area Council. They also reveal how wartime dynamics led to substantial environmental damage and lasting economic gains by industry. The Way We Really Were examines significant wartime changes in the circumstances of immigrant groups that have been largely overlooked by historians. Among these are Italian Americans, heavily insular and pro-Fascist before the war and very pro-American and assimilationist after, and Chinese American men, who achieved new legitimacy and entitlement through military service. Also included is a look at cultural negotiation among multiple ethnic groups in the Golden State. A valuable addition to the literature on California history, The War We Really Were provides an entree into new areas of scholarship and a fresh look at familiar ones.

Were Those Really The Good Ole Days written by Don Strong and has been published by Author House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-30 with Fiction categories.

The contents cover a middle aged middle-aged with two young children that sold their home and risked all by heading west in search of a fortune gold during the California gold rush in1849. Of course, they experienced some of the expected dangers, but also quite a few that they were unprepared for. In the book, the reader will enjoy learning about surprises that would be normally thought of in association with such a tough, rugged trip of this nature. The high point is the ending, which should not be read first. Unlike some writings, this would ruin the whole story. My hope and desire is that you thoroughly enjoy reading the story and tell friends and neighbors about it, in order that they can not only enjoy it, but also glean some interesting facts about life in a wagon train, as well as some interesting historical information. Good reading!

Eastern Waves, Western Shores is a novel based on the life of a Sri Lankan woman who comes to study in England and then moves back to Sri Lanka and struggles fitting back in. The expectation of the elders, of society in general, cultural norms and the demands on a modern day career woman overwhelm her. She is torn between her loyalty to her family and the dreams she has for herself. It is a book about a looming arranged marriage, the yearning of young woman to fall in love hopefully with someone that is acceptable to her and her family, to live away from the family feuds and land disputes, away from the "dictatorship" of elders vs her duties towards them. Even after following her heart and her dreams she feels tormented sometimes and seeks an equilibrium in America.
