Nora Baron is back! When the CIA helps a defecting Russian actress in Venice, the op turns deadly in this white-knuckle thriller from the bestselling author of Mrs. John Doe—proving once again that, in the words of James Patterson, “Tom Savage knows the mystery novel inside and out.” Galina Rostova, the hot new star of Moscow’s theater scene—and mistress to a powerful Russian general—has reached out to the CIA. In exchange for information vital to U.S. security, she requests asylum in America. The Company’s top pick for the mission is Nora Baron. The wife of a CIA operative, this Long Island mother and drama teacher has proven to be an asset in the field before. And as an actress herself, her cover will be convincing. Disguised as a television news host, Nora heads to Venice, Italy, where Rostova is appearing in Chekhov’s The Seagull. As the cameras roll during their mock interview, the starlet will make her escape—or at least that’s the plan. But when the defection goes off-script, the two women are on the run from Russian agents. And when a snowstorm buries Venice, clogging the streets, waterways, and airport, the stage is set for tragedy—with several lives at risk of a final curtain. Praise for Tom Savage’s first Nora Baron thriller, Mrs. John Doe “This is a rare spy thriller, smart, beautifully written, and stay-up-all-night enjoyable!”—New York Times bestselling author Gayle Lynds “A clever, compelling, and cinematic page-turner in which nothing is as it seems, Mrs. John Doe opens with a twist I didn’t see coming and closes with a satisfying bang.”—New York Times bestselling author Wendy Corsi Staub “Mrs. John Doe races a fictional path somewhere between Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie, a modern heroine-on-the-run spy thriller dealing with some of our time’s deadliest challenges.”—New York Times bestselling author James Grady

The Woman Who Ran Away is a mystery of sorts. Jack Waldek, the protagonist, is a senior tax manager with an obscure public accounting firm in New Jersey. He meets Fran Zetzmann when she occupies the next seat to him on an O’Hare to LaGuardia flight. Fran presumably holds a regional sales management position with an advertising representative firm and impresses Jack as an independent traveling lady. They develop a relationship which blooms into a comfortable weekend lover arrangement at Jack’s country place in a Pocono Mountains gated community called Knight Estates. Fran is a runner. She runs every weekend morning a distance of 1.8 miles regardless of weather. She leaves one Saturday morning shortly after seven in the morning and does not return, Jack sets out to look for Fran, locates the rental car in the parking lot next to the running trail and her purse is in the back seat. There is no sign of Fran. A search of her purse produces an odd looking cell phone and a wallet without credit cards. He reports her absence the next day to the Knight Estates Public Safety Department and continues to search for Fran. Jack finds that the address on her business card is nothing more than a New York City mail drop, and that Fran’s company ceased to exist three years before. He continues to probe and suddenly becomes aware that Fran is not the first person to disappear from Knight Estates. Jack then learns that the woman he had known as Fran was an operative of a Middle East industrial intelligence firm called SHALIMAR. It appears that the woman called Fran was assigned to cultivate Jack to learn about his principal client, Gianni Companies. Jack Waldek, the charming tax manager, finds himself enmeshed in a web of threats, violence, imposters. loutish public safety officers, a corporate control fight, and professional assassins. Everything is linked to Fran, the woman who ran away. Dwight Foster’s previous books include the Shattered Covenants series, (Present & Past Imperfect, The Road to McKenzie Barber, The Consultant, The Chairman, The Partner, The House of Harwell, and Twilight & Endgame) and NEW YORK FOLKS. His writings have a strong business flavor nurtured during his lengthy executive search consulting career in addition to his current role as Chairman of Foster Partners Asia, a human capital consulting firm serving clients in China, Malaysia, and Viet Nam.

A gripping account of the life and fate of the woman who almost assassinated Benito Mussolini. 7 April 1926: on the steps of the Capitol in Rome, surrounded by chanting Fascists, The Honourable Violet Gibson raises her old revolver and fires at the Italian head of state, Benito Mussolini - the darling of Europe's ruling class. The bullet narrowly misses the dictator's bald head, hitting him in the nose. Of all his would-be assassins, she came closest to changing the course of history. What brought her to this moment? The daughter of an Anglo-Irish lord, she had once consorted with royalty and the peerage. Yet terrible unhappiness lurked beneath that glittering surface. She loved Italy and when Mussolini's thugs took it into the moral cesspit of Fascism, she felt she had to act. She paid for it for the rest of her life, confined to a lunatic asylum, like other difficult women of her class. Frances Stonor Saunders' moving and compulsively readable book rescues this gentle, driven woman from a silent void and restores her dignity and purpose.

Hatshepsut, the daughter of a general who had usurped the throne of Egypt, was born into a privileged position within the royal household. Married off to her own brother, she was expected to bear sons who would legitimize the reign of her father’s family. But she failed to produce a male heir. Such was the twist of fate that paved the way for her own scarcely believable rule: she ascended to the throne as a ‘king’. Over a spectacular twenty-two-year reign, Hatshepsut proved herself a master strategist, cloaking her political power plays with a veil of piety and sexual reinvention. Just as women today face obstacles from a society that equates authority with masculinity, Hatshepsut had to operate the levers of a patriarchal system to emerge as Egypt’s second female pharaoh. Scholars have long speculated as to why her images were violently destroyed within a few decades of her death, all but erasing evidence of her rule. Constructing a rich narrative history using the sources that remain, noted Egyptologist Kara Cooney offers a remarkable interpretation of how Hatshepsut rapidly but methodically consolidated power—and why she fell from public favour just as quickly. The Woman Who Would Be King traces the unconventional life of a female pharaoh and explores our complicated reactions to women in power.

DIVDIVA collection of nine madcap stories following the wayfaring translator and amateur sleuth Cassandra Reilly around the globe in search of her next great mystery/divDIV Lesbian translator and part-time detective Cassandra Reilly has two thrilling investigations under her belt: the case of a missing person in Barcelona and that of a dead spa-owner in Transylvania. In this humorous and engrossing collection, Cassandra is hard at work in some of the world’s most picturesque locales, including Maui, the English moors, and the Icelandic coast./divDIV Among the vast assortment of misdeeds she’s called upon to investigate—most of which take place within the literary world—Cassandra finds ample opportunity to exercise her trademark wit and eye for irony. From “Murder at the International Feminist Book Fair,” in which the exploits of a mudslinging women’s magazine lead to a death on the floor of the convention, to “An Expatriate Death,” about a local Mexican writer who appropriates Cassandra’s identity for a character in his novel—and then promptly kills off the character—The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman is another showcase of the intrepid translator’s zest not only for globetrotting, but for wandering smack into the middle of the most unusual crimes./divDIV The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman is the third book in the Cassandra Reilly Mystery series, which begins with Gaudí Afternoon and Trouble in Transylvania, and concludes with The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists./div/div
