“A fresh and provocative biography of La Pucelle . . . her transformation from a naive girl to a strong-willed, bold, and gifted captain of war.”—Frederic J. Baumgartner, author of France in the Sixteenth Century France’s great heroine and England’s great scourge: whether a lunatic, a witch, a religious icon, or a skilled soldier and leader, Joan of Arc’s contemporaries found her as extraordinary and fascinating as the legends that abound about her today. But her life has been so endlessly cast and recast that we have lost sight of the remarkable girl at the heart of it—a teenaged peasant girl who, after claiming to hear voices, convinced the French king to let her lead a disheartened army into battle. In the process she changed the course of European history. In The Virgin Warrior, Larissa Juliet Taylor paints a vivid portrait of Joan as a self-confident, charismatic and supremely determined figure, whose sheer force of will electrified those around her and struck terror into the hearts of the English soldiers and leaders. The drama of Joan’s life is set against a world where visions and witchcraft were real, where saints could appear to peasants, battles and sieges decided the fate of kingdoms and rigged trials could result in burning at the stake. Yet in her short life, Joan emboldened the French soldiers and villagers with her strength and resolve. A difficult, inflexible leader, she defied her accusers and enemies to the end. From her early years to the myths and fantasies that have swelled since her death, Taylor “goes deep into Joan of Arc’s heart and soul and shows us the maiden, the warrior and the heroine” (Kate Williams, New York Times bestselling author)./

Joan of Arc was an important person in history. At the time of Joan of Arc, the English controlled the Northern part of France and the French ruled the south. Joan of Arc was a illiterate French maid. The people in her area had a person they believed had the right to be the king but he could not be crowned king because by tradition the coronation ceremony had to take place in a certain city, Reims, France. However, he could not get there because it was in the North and the English controlled that place. The French had been fighting battles against the English for a long time about this but the English always won. The French always lost. Then, Joan of Arc came forward. She claimed that she had received voices from heaven who told her how to win the battles and to defeat the English. At first the commanders did not take her seriously and thought she was just a crazy girl. However, after they lost a few more battles and she successfully predicted the outcomes, they decided that they were doing so poorly that they might as well give her the chance. They put Joan of Arc in charge of the army and amazingly as soon as she became the commander, her forces started winning. They won battle after battle with Joan of Arc as their commander. Finally the French were able to capture Reims, the city they needed to capture so that the man they favored could be crowned king. They took that city and he was crowned King Charles VII. Thus, her main goal was accomplished. However, not long thereafter Joan of Arc was captured by the English. They believed that she was a witch or an evil sorceress. They felt that she must be a witch because how else was it possible that a mere 19-year-old girl could so easily defeat the entire English Army. They checked her and she was a virgin, an important point. They were convinced that she must be a witch. So, they tied her to a stake, set a fire and burned her up. This was all done legally and proper-like, with witnesses, a trial and a verdict. She was burned at the Stake on May 30, 1431. Her birth date is not known. She is believed to have been 19 when she died. The Catholic Church declared on 16 May 1920 that Joan of Arc was a saint, not a witch. Now, she is called "Saint Joan." The question remains: Why would a saint have the power to defeat men in battle?

Joan of Arc was born in a small French village during the worst period of the Hundred Years' War. For generations, France had been besieged by the British. At age 11, Joan began to see religious visions telling her to join forces with the King of France. By the time she was a teenager, she was leading troops into battle in the name of her country. Though she was captured and executed for her beliefs, Joan of Arc became a Catholic saint and has since captured the world's imagination.

Joan Of Arc written by Stephen Wesley Richey and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Christian saints categories.

It began with voices -- St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret speaking to an ordinary farmer's daughter. Inspired to aid the future King Charles VII, whose right to the throne had been denied by the English in the Hundred Years War, Joan of Arc made her journey clad in male attire. Theologians testified to the veracity of her divine claims, and she was furnished with a host of troops. But how did she achieve the military feats that made her a legend? Stephen W. Richey offers a unique look at this remarkable woman. Joan of Are rapidly matured into a true battle commander who spoke forcefully in war councils, made decisions, and gave orders that were obeyed -- resulting in a stunning series of victories for her army. She achieved this feat by virtue of her unschooled but intuitive genius for war, a charismatic personality that inspired her soldiers to heroic feats, and her ability to exploit a unique set of lucky circumstances. Drawing on eyewitness accounts of Joan's comrades-in-arms and the author's own military experience, Richey goes beyond what Joan did in her amazing career, analyzing how she performed her martial feats. The first study in English to dig deeper into the mechanics of Joan's military career, and the first English treatment by a professional soldier with battle-field experience, this vivid account explores Joan's achievements in winning the loyalty of her men.

Acclaimed historian Helen Castor brings us afresh a gripping life of Joan of Arc. Instead of the icon, she gives us a living, breathing young woman; a roaring girl fighting the English, and taking sides in a bloody civil war that was tearing fifteenth century France apart. Here is a portrait of a 19-year-old peasant who hears voices from God; a teenager transformed into a warrior leading an army to victory, in an age that believed women should not fight. And it is also the story behind the myth we all know, a myth which began to take hold at her trial: that of the Maid of Orleans, the saviour of France, a young woman burned at the stake as a heretic, a woman who five hundred years later would be declared a saint. Joan and her world are brought vividly to life in this refreshing new take on the medieval world. Helen Castor brings us to the heart of the action, to a woman and a country in turmoil, a world where no-one - not Joan herself, nor the people around her, princes, bishops, soldiers or peasants - knew what would happen next.
