A detailed, systematic analysis of press coverage (English language press as well as Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, and Bengali language press) of five issues related to Indian women and a critique of the portrayal of women on prime time television between 1979 and 1988. The five issues are: dowry-related deaths; rape; the right to maintenance of Muslim divorcees; the misuse of sex determination tests such as amniocentesis; and the re-emergence of the banned practice of "sati" (widow burning). Watching the World: an introduction to the series: This series of five teaching units has been developed during the course of a three year curriculum development project run by Manchester Development Education Project. The aims of the project were to work with secondary humanities teachers to explore the ways in which our perceptions of the world are created, challenged or re-affirmed by the media; develop teaching materials for a cross-curricular approach to promote a critical awareness of the representation of people, places and cultures within the wider context of related media and development issues. The project resulted in the publication of this book and the four others comprising 'Watching the World'. Each of the units can be used separately but they have been designed to complement each other. The units are not intended to be used sequentially or as a whole course, although 'Investigating Images' is a core unit and provides an introduction to the others. They are, therefore, a flexible resource for teachers who, recognizing that they are inevitably dealing daily with mediated information and attitudes, wish to explore aspects of this in relation to their curriculum area. Each of the units is intended for use with the 13-16 age range but the material has been used successfully with younger and older students. Each unit provided cross-curricular approaches for teachers to use within humanities subject areas, as part of personal and social education courses and within educational initiatives such as TVEI. Each unit provides resources and active learning techniques for teaching about media issues relevant to our interdependent world and multicultural society, within an anti-racist and anti-sexist framework. Teaching about the media: These units have been developed to be accessible to all teachers, whether familiar with media education or not. The philosophy and principles of media education are implicit but not discussed. Teachers are directed to publication mentioned in the resources section for some excellent theoretical and practical guides to teaching about the media.--page 2.
