Excerpt from Why America Fights Germany (Cantonment: Edition) America is a peaceable nation. We believe in the principle of "live and let live." We respect other nations rights, wish them prosperity, and envy them nothing. We have vast territory and undeveloped resources, enough to occupy our minds and hands for generations without meddling with other people's concerns. We believe that the peace and happiness of mankind will be promoted by self-government for all, by allowing the population of each civilized country to govern itself. Through almost our whole history we have stood for democracy and peace. We have protected China from robbery and war on the part of more greedy nations, and have stood the strongest friend of the new Chinese republic. In 1896 we stood the friend of Venezuela in her controversy with Great Britain, and prevented war. For years we have even allowed our own citizens to be wronged in Mexico rather than make war on our neighbor republic. Consequently, we are now trusted as the big brother of all the republics in the New World. When we departed from our peaceful policy in 1898, and made war on Spain, it was in order to stop intolerable oppression at our very door, in Cuba. We then gave and have guarded the independence of Cuba, and only took the Philippine Islands in order to save them from falling to some less disinterested nation, and in order to educate their people for independence later. Thus we have always worked for peace, and for the justice to all which is the only sure way to maintain peace. Well, then, why did we enter the Great European War? Why was it our affair? If we love peace, why do we make war? Did we drift in without knowing what we were doing, did we get in by some kind of "fluke"? We are in the war because we had to go in unless we were entirely blind to our own honor and safety, and to the future happiness of the whole world. Germany has attacked us. What finally forced us into the war was the unlimited submarine warfare started by Germany on the 1st of February, 1917. Before this, many American ships had been sunk by German war on us submarines, and hundreds of American lives had been lost on these and other ships. Kurt Frank Korf's story is one of the most unusual to come out of World War II. Although German-Americans were America's largest ethnic group, and German-Americans--including thousands of native-born Germans--fought bravely in all theaters, there are few full first-person accounts by German- Americans of their experiences during the 1930s and 1940s. Drawing on his correspondence and on oral histories and interviews with Korf, Patricia Kollander paints a fascinating portrait of a privileged young man forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1937 because the infamous Nuremburg Laws had relegated him to the status of "second-degree mixed breed" (Korf had one Jewish grandparent). Settling in New York City, Korf became an FBI informant, watching pro-Nazi leaders like Fritz Kuhn and the German-American Bund as they moved among the city's large German immigrant community. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany as an intelligence officer during the Battle of the Bulge, and as a prisoner of war camp administrator. After the war, Korf stayed on as a U.S. government attorney in Berlin and Munich, working to hunt down war criminals, and lent his expertise in the effort to determine the authenticity of Joseph Goebbels's diaries. Kurt Frank Korf died in 2000. Kollander not only draws a detailed portrait of this unique figure; she also provides a rich context for exploring responses to Nazism in Germany, the German-American position before and during the war, the community's later response to Nazism and its crimes, and the broader issues of ethnicity, religion, political ideology, and patriotism in 20th-century America. Patricia Kollander is Associate Professor of History at Florida Atlantic University. She is the author of Frederick III: Germany's Liberal Emperor. The American Army in Germany, 1918–1923: Success against the Odds by Dean A. Nowowiejski fills a gap in American military and political history through thorough research and a compelling narrative of the Rhineland occupation. After the armistice ended the fighting on the Western Front in World War I, the US Third Army marched into the American occupation zone around the city of Koblenz, Germany, in December 1918. American forces remained there as part of an “inter-Allied” coalition until early 1923. Nowowiejski reintroduces us to a successful military diplomat, Major General Henry T. Allen, who faced two major challenges: build an efficient army and handle the complexity of working with the Allied powers of France, Britain, and Belgium in the Inter-Allied Rhineland High Commission (IARHC). Allen’s ability to balance the interests of the French with those of the occupied Germans made him an indispensable participant in the High Commission. As the French sought revenge and added security against Germany, Allen moderated their actions with diplomatic skill. When the French sent forces into Germany in 1920 and 1921, Allen ensured that the US zone around Koblenz remained free of French interference. These achievements were without the support of the administration, and Congress had no desire to take part in European affairs. Allen also had to create a competent American army in the Rhineland so that the Allied powers and the Germans would respect American views and interests. He successfully took a large number of new recruits, who replaced World War I combat veterans, and molded them into a professional fighting force. As a result, the American Forces in Germany became an exemplar for the entire US Army and a symbol to the Allies and Germans of American power and resolve. This force competently accomplished the difficult task of postwar occupation according to the highest international standards. The US administration made the decision in 1922 to radically cut back the size of Allen’s army, and in 1923 to remove all US troops from Germany. The author analyzes this withdrawal as a “missed opportunity” for US leverage on diplomatic developments in Europe.
