A New York Times bestseller 'A sensation ... a rollicking tale well told' - The Times At the heart of Born to Run lies a mysterious tribe of Mexican Indians, the Tarahumara, who live quietly in canyons and are reputed to be the best distance runners in the world; in 1993, one of them, aged 57, came first in a prestigious 100-mile race wearing a toga and sandals. A small group of the world's top ultra-runners (and the awe-inspiring author) make the treacherous journey into the canyons to try to learn the tribe's secrets and then take them on over a course 50 miles long. With incredible energy and smart observation, McDougall tells this story while asking what the secrets are to being an incredible runner. Travelling to labs at Harvard, Nike, and elsewhere, he comes across an incredible cast of characters, including the woman who recently broke the world record for 100 miles and for her encore ran a 2:50 marathon in a bikini, pausing to down a beer at the 20 mile mark.

Meet Billy Butler. He's been safely guarded from the evils (fun) of life by his overprotective parents, thereby spending his first 18 years on the planet moldering on the line of goodness and virtue. Meet Mirna, Billy's older sister who, now that her brother is out of school, wants to rectify that situation by introducing him to wine, women and song. Meet Sue, the girl who can't wait to sink her roots into the young flower that is Billy Butler and sprout some weeds! Meet Billy's nemesis, Smith (high school bully extraordinaire), who has been a thorn in Billy's side for so long that the daily dose of verbal abuse just seems natural. But Billy is ready for his life to begin now, for some excitement and romance--there's just one teeny little hitch in this plan that even Billy isn't prepared for. After the success of How Did Long John Silver Lose His Leg?, Dennis Butts and Peter Hunt take their forensic lenses to more mysteries that have troubled readers of children's books over the centuries. Their questions range from the historical to the philosophical, some of which are puzzling, some of which are controversial: Why does it seem there are no Nursery Rhymes before 1744? Why did God start to die in children's books long before Nietzsche noticed it? Why are the schoolgirls at Enid Blyton's St Clare's so horrible? Why are there so many dead parents littering children's books? Why does C.S. Lewis annoy so many people? Why Was Billy Bunter Never Really Expelled? also reveals how an elephant captures Adolph Hitler, who was Biggles's great love, and whose side G.A. Henty was on in the American Civil War, and delivers a plethora of erudite, entertaining answers to questions that you may not have thought of asking. And notably, of course, it explains why William George Bunter, the Fat Owl of the Remove, was never permanently removed from Greyfriars School.

About the Book Having been motivated by the movie short, Billy was anxious to show his friend Wayne how he was capable of running the mile in times near that shown on the screen. They biked to the track. Billy took off his shirt and did some stretches and short warm up runs. When he was ready, he told Wayne to start him. Wayne looked at his watch and gave him the go signal and Billy was off. He ran the first lap (400 meters) and looked strong. By the middle of the second lap, he started to slow down. The slowdown continued into the third lap. By the fourth lap, he was barely running and halfway through the lap he was just walking. “If you finish in the next 20 seconds you will have done six minutes and 30 seconds,” Wayne yelled, laughing. “Kiss my ass. You were right; it does take a different kind of conditioning,” Billy responded while gasping for air. “But six minutes and 30 seconds for the mile is a starting point for me, I guess.” “Guess again, my future track star. You ran only 1,600 meters, you need to add another nine meters to make a mile. There are 1609 meters in a mile,” Wayne offered, laughing. About the Author As a change from his usual genre in previous stories James Hughes wanted to write a feel-good story of friendship and life as it unfolds. Calling on old memories and some history, he tells the story of friendship between two young men who had come from significantly different lifestyles. The story tells how they were able to overcome their differences not by changing each other, but by understanding and appreciating their differences. Their humor was always a significant part of their relationship. They were able to hold on to their friendship even when separated by time and distance.
