In low-income U.S. cities, street fights between teenage girls are common. These fights take place at school, on street corners, or in parks, when one girl provokes another to the point that she must either “step up” or be labeled a “punk.” Typically, when girls engage in violence that is not strictly self-defense, they are labeled “delinquent,” their actions taken as a sign of emotional pathology. However, in Why Girls Fight, Cindy D. Ness demonstrates that in poor urban areas this kind of street fighting is seen as a normal part of girlhood and a necessary way to earn respect among peers, as well as a way for girls to attain a sense of mastery and self-esteem in a social setting where legal opportunities for achievement are not otherwise easily available. Ness spent almost two years in west and northeast Philadelphia to get a sense of how teenage girls experience inflicting physical harm and the meanings they assign to it. While most existing work on girls’ violence deals exclusively with gangs, Ness sheds new light on the everyday street fighting of urban girls, arguing that different cultural standards associated with race and class influence the relationship that girls have to physical aggression.

A young child witnesses four girls who fight in a cage. Scared, the child runs home and tells an adult. The adult talks about fighting, why it's wrong, how to prevent it, and more - all using gender- neutral characters in a socially-respons- ible context. From the crazy fat guy that brought you GIRLFIGHT, the controversial nightmare horror short film that was banned from Amazon Video, comes the first social and ethically responsible product from GirlFightMovie.com, LLC - a children's book about fighting. Specifically girls. At first glance one may be compelled to ask, "Why did something so sinister as GIRLFIGHT become a children's book?" The author boldly goes where no one's gone before and dares ask, "Why do major cigarette companies run anti-smoking ads? Why do alcohol companies promote responsible drinking? Why do casinos promote gambling hotlines? Because as you may be exposed to those behaviors, your kids could easily become exposed to horror films whose trailers appear on several sites world-wide. And guess what, my film's one of them." Let's face it - with public schools today and the Internet exposing kids to fights, are you prepared to answer this age-old question, especially after your child comes home after witnessing or being a part of a fight? With this book, now you are. WHY DO GIRLS FIGHT is a simple yet effective approach for creative and alternative adults who teach their children about the dangers they can face in the real world. Using illustrated screenshots from the GIRLFIGHT short film, a gender-neutral child witnesses a scary fight among four different girls in the woods and comes home with questions. Rather than avoiding the issues, a gender-neutral adult answers all the serious questions and holds nothing back. From alternatives to fighting to what to do if someone feels threatened, the book provides the answers parents and educators need in today's dangerous world.

Today's twisted pictures of gender roles create confusion over how a woman should define herself. Women and men are encouraged to move closer to center and away from the traits that distinguish male from female. How can women feel good about themselves when society is constantly dictating what they can and should be? In FIGHT LIKE A GIRL, Lisa Bevere exhorts us to embrace the differences between sexes. Her goal is to encourage women to celebrate the unique aspects of femininity. Instead of trying to adopt ill-fitting character traits, women should see themselves as designed and valued by God and savor their femininity as their strength, not a flaw.

The Beauty of the Moment meets Exit, Pursued by a Bear. Award-winning thriller writer Sheena Kamal delivers a kick-ass debut YA novel that will have fans crying out for more. Love and violence. In some families they're bound up together, dysfunctional and poisonous, passed from generation to generation like eye color or a quirk of smile. Trisha's trying to break the chain, channeling her violent impulses into Muay Thai kickboxing, an unlikely sport for a slightly built girl of Trinidadian descent. Her father comes and goes as he pleases, his presence adding a layer of tension to the Toronto east-end townhouse that Trisha and her mom call home, every punch he lands on her mother carving itself indelibly into Trisha's mind. Until the night he wanders out drunk in front of the car Trisha is driving, practicing on her learner's permit, her mother in the passenger seat. Her father is killed, and her mother seems strangely at peace. Lighter, somehow. Trisha doesn't know exactly what happened that night, but she's afraid it's going to happen again. Her mom has a new man in her life and the patterns, they are repeating.
