Excerpt from Why I Believe the Bible The choice Of a profession was then before him. Not without an inward struggle he resolved to enter upon a theological course in the hope Of regaining a sufficient measure of faith to warrant his going on. It was a foregone conclusion that the experiment would fail. NO man in such a q'uicksand can recover his footing by a dead lift; any more than a planet which has swerved from its orbit can automatically save itself from exile in infinite Space. Excerpt from Why We Believe the Bible At the present time the Holy Scriptures are exposed to varied hostile attacks. Even some of the friends of the Bible appear to be quite ready to surrender the outposts, with the hope, if not for the purpose, Of saving the citadel. New defences for the Bible as a revelation of divine truth seem to be demanded, and in the Wonderful providence of God they have been provided. Biblical defences were never so abundant and strong as at the beginning of the twentieth century. The authority and veracity of the Scriptures were never supported by such harmonious and convincing testimony as now. Excerpt from The Truths of Religion and the Bible I come to violate no law and to Oppose no organization. I come not as Huss did, or Luther or Calvin, with fire in my eye and Satan in my heart. I come as the Summer breeze cometh, to soothe, strengthen and delight. I come in the interests of peace, to pro mote peace. I come to teach liberty of conscience and liberty of sentiment, the unrestricted right of all men and women to believe in those doctrines which the God of heaven, as well as the God of earth, impels them to believe. I come to teach the common brother hood of the race, not in theory only, but in practice, not for any one sect, butfor all mankind. I come to teach love, the love for all nature, as well as for Nature's God. I come to praise God, not because I fear him, but because I love him; not because I dread his mightiness, but because I adore his goodness. Excerpt from The Art of Enjoying the Bible In the following pages I have tried to set down, in language as plain as I could command, an answer in some sort to the one question which comes to my ears oftener than any other; namely, How can I read the Bible so as to enjoy it Not how to read the Bible - for every one knows how to read it for one purpose or another - for conscience' sake, for ex ample, or for literary gain, or for texts to support a pet theory, or as a religious duty - but how to read it with that sense of pleasure which we think one ought to feel in reading such a book as we believe the Bible to be. Excerpt from What I Believe and Why I Believe It No attempt was made to formulate doctrines. Spiritual truth is apprehended not by elaborat ing theologies but in living. At the same time due respect was paid to the religious convictions of all men. There are great fundamental truths that all devout men, of whatever race or creed, believe in, and these are the truths that are sought and emphasized. Stick to the fundamentals and you will not quarrel with anyone. There was no desire to preach a new gospel, declare a new philosophy, or propagate new theories. In fact, the purpose of the addresses was not so much to inform the minds of the hearers as to clarify their ideals, quicken their moral life and inspire their spiritual aspirations. One word of explanation. Concerning the speaker may be permitted. He is not a minis ter in a professional sense. As a certified public accountant he has a part in the busy world of affairs and steps to his Sunday plat form, not from study and ministerial confer ence, but from counting room and business Of fice. He knows at first hand the temptations, doubts, discouragements and weaknesses of the man in the street and his addresses are wrought out in the hot fires of commercial struggle and business rivalries. This fact may account for his slight regard for speculation and theology, and his emphasis upon the practical phases of religious life and belief. Excerpt from A Commentary on the Bible We must not be hard on the tenacity and even obstinacy of those who felt themselves called upon to fight against the modern view of the Bible. If their judgment was at fault, their motives were of the highest. Religion is the most precious possession of man; it finds him in the elemental, changeless region of his being; and anything that endangers its interests must at all costs be resisted and overcome. Now, just because religion appeals to the permanent elements in man's nature, it is difficult to avoid identifying it with the special forms in which it is embodied. Conse quently, when we are called to give up any of our religious conceptions, we are prone to believe that religion itself is in danger. Thus, however open-minded and liberal we may be in other matters, we are all apt to become conservatives in religion. A creed, once formulated, tends to become fossilised, and to entrench itself behind a rampart of sacred affections and time-honoured traditions. Progress in religious thought is slow and painful. It is no wonder that this has been specially the case with men's thoughts about the Bible-the most precious volume in the religious literature of the race. But, if the progress of Biblical Science has been slow, it has been inevitable. The very love of truth which the Bible has been the chief means of propagating, has made it impossible to hold back the movement; once fairly begun, it could not but come to its own at last. Let us consider in the first place the change that has become necessary in our ideas of the inspiration of the Bible, of the revelation contained in it, and of its supreme authority. Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Excerpt from Men of the Bible A great many people are afraid of the will of God, and yet I believe that one of the sweetest lessons that we can learn in the school of Christ is the surrender of our wills to God, letting Him plan for us and rule our lives. If I know my own mind, if an angel should come from the throne of God and tell me that I could have my will done the rest of my days on earth, and that everything I wished should be carried out, or that I might refer it back to God, and let God's will be done in me and through me, I think in an instant I would say.
