God said to me, Why is there no lasting revival? Most revivals don't last long. They start up. Sometimes it takes a while to start them up. But sometimes they start up and then they fizzle out. Five years is a very long revival. I've been in a revival where it's been two years, I've been in a revival that was only six months. And you got to understand whatever the timetable is, there are different levels of revival. But why isn't there any long-lasting revival, and I got some things that I'm going to get into here, but I'm going to be jumping around. But I really believe that we have gotten to be in a delusion in the church. People don't even know what they're asking for when they ask for revival, they want revival to come. They want God to move in the church. But then when God begins to shift and begin to try to do it, they're like, oh, I don't want that. Let me tell you something, you cannot say what the revival is going to be. You can't choose the revival. You can't even choose the people that are going to come to it. Come on, we would like to choose. And it's you say all that, what's wrong with that? There's something wrong with that. But you got to understand, I couldn't have a choice, God's that kind of God, sometimes he'll bring some of those people. And they'll come and they'll plop it down in the seat. And they'll have the stirring like they never left. And I'm telling you, there's a lot of things that are happening, but we have been delusional for so long. And there are some things that are about to happen because we want the stirring of revival, but we don't want the change. Let me tell you, some revival is going to come and it's going to change everything. It's gonna change the way you even look at church.

Why is the United States the only advanced capitalist country with no labor party? This question is one of the great enduring puzzles of American political development, and it lies at the heart of a fundamental debate about the nature of American society. Tackling this debate head-on, Robin Archer puts forward a new explanation for why there is no American labor party-an explanation that suggests that much of the conventional wisdom about "American exceptionalism" is untenable. Conventional explanations rely on comparison with Europe. Archer challenges these explanations by comparing the United States with its most similar New World counterpart-Australia. This comparison is particularly revealing, not only because the United States and Australia share many fundamental historical, political, and social characteristics, but also because Australian unions established a labor party in the late nineteenth century, just when American unions, against a common backdrop of industrial defeat and depression, came closest to doing something similar. Archer examines each of the factors that could help explain the American outcome, and his systematic comparison yields unexpected conclusions. He argues that prosperity, democracy, liberalism, and racial hostility often promoted the very changes they are said to have obstructed. Essential to Methodist revivalism was the personal conversion experience, which constituted the basis of salvation and church membership. Revivalism, maintains Airhart, was a distinctive form of piety and socialization that was critical in helping Methodists define who they were, colouring their understanding of how religion was to be experienced, practised, articulated, and cultivated. This revivalist piety, even more than doctrine or policy, was the identifying mark of Methodism in the nineteenth century. But, during the late Victorian era, the Methodist presentation of the religious life underwent a transformation. By 1925, when the Methodist Church was incorporated into the United Church of Canada, its most prominent leaders were espousing an approach to piety that was essentially, and sometimes explicitly, non-revivalist. The Methodist approach to personal religion changed during this transition and, significantly, Methodists increasingly became identified with social Christianity -- although experience remained a key aspect of their theology. There was also a growing tendency to associate revivalism with fundamentalism, a new religious development that used the Methodist language of conversion but was unappealing to Canadian Methodists. Airhart portrays the tensions between tradition and innovation through stories of the men and women who struggled to revitalize religion in an age when conventional social assumptions and institutions were being challenged by the ideals of the progressive movement. Serving the Present Age is an account of Canadian Methodist participation in a realignment of North American Protestantism which supporters believed would better enable them, in the words of a well-known Wesley hymn, "to serve the present age."
