The world population at the time of writing this book is estimated to be 7.8 billion people. According to the World Bank report in 2017, 9.2% of this population lives in abject or extreme poverty. Mathematically, 9.2% of the total world population stands at 689 million people. This means that 689 million people live on less than $2 daily. Going a bit higher, 24.1% of the world's population live on less than $3.5 daily, while 43.6% live on less than $6 daily. If we are to sum up the total number of people in percentage that live in poverty, it means that 76.9% of the world population lives in poverty. 76.9% means that over 5 billion people live in poverty, which is so alarming and worrisome. Yes, it is worrisome because we live in a world filled with abundance, yet people die every second out of starvation, resulting from economic poverty. The questions begging for serious answers are why people get poor? Or why are the majority of the world population poor? Does it mean that the wealthy people are wicked by hoarding all the wealth of the earth? To provide undeniable solutions to the questions above, I dug deep to discover why people get poor even when they make money, and how to overcome personal poverty. My findings show that poverty is a choice; you either choose to be poor by stopping to read now or continue reading to walk yourself into the group of few wealthy people of the world today. Fighting poverty begins with having a comprehensive understanding of why people become poor. Before we talk about that, first, let us look at some of the myths about poverty.
