Although microwave mixers play a critical role in wireless communication and other microwave applications employing frequency conversion circuits, engineers find that most books on this subject emphasize theoretical aspects, rather than practical applications. That’s about to change with the forthcoming release of Microwave Mixer Technology and Applications. Based on a review of over one thousand patents on mixers and frequency conversion, authors Bert Henderson and Edmar Camargo have written a comprehensive book for mixer designers who want solid ideas for solving their own design challenges. Many of the important and most interesting patents and related circuits are discussed in the several application oriented chapters. In addition, important contributions from the technical literature are included to provide a solid theoretical foundation. This book contains both introductory and advanced material about active and passive mixers that use bipolar transistor, FET, or diode switching devices. Theory and design details are presented for dozens of important mixer designs, with practical application information derived from the authors’ decades of experience.

Two subharmonically pumped (SHP) diode mixers are designed for wideband W-band RF frequencies, fixed LO frequency operation. These mixers are fabricated on a 4-mil substrate using 0.1- ææææm GaAs MMIC process. Both simulation and test results show that the mixers are with 12.25 and 11.75 dB average conversion losses, respectively. Both mixers have IF bandwidth wider than 20 GHz. The conversion loss flatness of the symmetric circuit is within "1.25 dB. To our knowledge, these are the state-of-the-art result on low-conversion-loss wideband MMIC SHP diode mixers.

The study presents the results of an investigation of microwave amplitude limiters. The purpose of the study was to seek out and compare the characteristics of microwave devices used as limiters, and to determine which of those considered are capable of low-phase-distortion, broadband, wide-dynamic-range envelope limiting. A resume of performance characteristics is given for several types of microwave limiters. Theoretical analyses are presented for a single-ended mixer-limiter and for five component arrangements of balanced mixer-limiters. Results of laboratory measurements are given, principally for the microwave mixer-limiter and tunnel-diode amplifier-limiter. Measurement data include static and dynamic limiting characteristics, frequency and time-domain photographs, and static and dynamic phase-distortion measurements. A novel technique was used to measure nonlinear phase distortion (AM-to-PM conversion) using input amplitude variations at rates of the order of tens of megahertz. (Author).

This chapter has described a multi-port reflectometer which employs scalar instead of complex ratio detection techniques to determine the complex reflection coefficient of a given Device Under Test. The operation and optimum design principles of this type of microwave measurement instrument have been explained. Following that, the design of a seven-port reflectometer in microstrip-slot multilayer technology formed by five couplers and one inphase power divider operating over an ultra wide frequency band of 3.1 to 10.6 GHz has been presented. It has been shown that the seven-port network forming this reflectometer fulfils optimum design requirements. The calibration procedure involving the use of six calibration standards of match load, open, short, two phased-shorts and an intermediate termination have been described for this reflectometer. The performance of the developed reflectometer has been evaluated for 3 different attenuators. The obtained results have.
