Neben Positionen führender Theolog:innen zur Frage der Wissenschaftlichkeit der Theologie werden vor allem inhaltliche fundamentaltheologische Argumentationslinien in den Blick genommen. Die Vielfalt der Ansätze, Stile und Schulen der (Fundamental-)Theologie kommt ebenso zur Sprache wie die durchaus grundsätzlichen Zweifel vieler ihrer aktiven Vertreter:innen. Die Bestandsaufnahme zur Wissenschaftlichkeit der Theologie führt naturgemäß nicht zu einer abschließenden Beantwortung der Ausgangsfrage. Die Intention des Buches liegt vielmehr darin, eine Diskussion innerhalb und außerhalb der Theologie anzustoßen, die zu einer vertieften Reflexion über die Wissenschaftlichkeit des Faches beitragen soll. Das Buch mit seinem Blick von außen (der Autor ist kein Theologe) richtet sich an Theologe:innen und interessierte Laien.
