In China und seinen Nachbarländern ist die Geschichte ungeheuer populär und wird dank zahlreicher Verfilmungen auch bei uns immer bekannter; zur Zeit plant der chinesische Erfolgsproduzent Zhang Jizhong eine Verfilmung als Trilogie in Zusammenarbeit mit James Cameron. Neben den Filmen gibt es zahllose (Kinder-)Bücher, Comics, TV-Serien und Videospiele, die den Stoff aufgreifen.
