This beautiful field guide offers orchid enthusiasts everything they need to know about what, where, and when to find wild orchids in the southeastern United States. With 285 color photos and detailed original drawings, it will delight both the new admirer and the long-time lover of these seductive flowering plants. Covering a region that includes eastern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and northern Florida, as well as southeastern North Carolina, and southern Arkansas, the book presents all the information necessary to correctly identify 76 species of orchids, 4 varieties, 61 forms, and 13 hybrids. It includes some of the rarest species found in the United States as well as several new species and subspecific taxa that recently have been documented in this area but have never been described in book format. No existing field guide provides all available information for these states. Orchid identification presents even experienced botanists with a challenge. Paul Martin Brown, author of several successful orchid books for other U.S. regions, undertakes this task in a logical, easy-to-understand manner. The guide is designed for locating information easily while one foot is in the proverbial bog. Brown’s approach to the complex vocabulary of botanical taxonomy is clear and his explanation of botanical keys will aid the novice orchid hunter as well as the trained orchid professional. Created for identification in the field or anywhere live specimens are found, the key is not strictly technical. Its dependence on color and measurements has been kept to a minimum, allowing readers to use it without removing orchids from the wild. Supporting material addresses common questions about habitat, color forms, and hybrids and also clarifies the taxonomically confusing genera Spiranthes and Platanthera.

The Native Orchids Of Florida written by Carlyle A. Luer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1972 with Gardening categories.

"In the year 1957, my wife and I were fascinated when we saw a flower of Polyrrhiza lindenii. We were greatly impressed when we learned that this amazing leafless orchid, the flower of which resembles the ghoulish ghost of a frog leaping in mid-air, was a native of our own state of Florida. We became excited over plans to find one, which we accomplished without too much trouble except for getting our feet wet. The fun we had in finding this species and the photographs we took home as lasting trophies led us from one orchid to another. This was only the beginning of a hobby which was soon to develop into a gigantic effort to find and photograph every species of orchid known to have occurred naturally in Florida, and eventually to publish this book. As years wore on, horizons widened. A second volume on the native orchids of the United States and Canada, exclusive of those species found only in the southeasternmost states contained in this volume, will follow. Many monographs on local orchid flora have appeared throughout the years. The present work has been designed first of all for orchidophiles like ourselves, be they amateur or professional. With the treatises of Morris and Eames and of Correll as basic guides, each genus is described as a separate chapter. Since the recognition of a plant by a technical description and line drawings may be difficult, especially for an amateur, a series of photographs in color has been assembled, which will provide the reader with a greater feeling of familiarity with each species, something we have always wanted to see ourselves. With very few exceptions each species has been pictured in its native habitat. Close-up portraits of individual flowers and such interesting features as roots, fruit, and unusual variations have been included."--

Native orchid expert and author Paul Martin Brown continues his successful series on the wild orchids of North America with Wild Orchids of the Prairies and Great Plains Region. Whether beginner or professional, curious orchid hunters will be able to locate the more than 64 species, 9 varieties, 8 hybrids, and 71 forms to be found in the wide variety of this region's local habitats. Brown reveals the best spots to search for the orchids he describes and offers expert advice on how to plan and execute an enjoyable (and environmentally responsible) outing. As in Brown's previous guides, all information is presented in a simple, straightforward style and with ample illustration for proper identification. Each species and variety is colorfully illustrated with photographs, a diagnostic line drawing, a distribution map, and a complete description of its habitat, range, and flowering time. Specific attention has been paid to the numerous growth and color forms, and a full, detailed list of synonyms for each species is included in a separate section. Brown discusses new concepts in taxonomy and the place of hybrids and provides a comprehensive list of recent literature references and a bibliography. He also addresses the unique species found in the continent's isolated prairie regions, including the "prairie islands" of the southeastern United States. Geographical coverage includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, the prairies and plains portions of Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and similar areas in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

In a complete revision and expansion of his previous work on the subject, Paul Martin Brown incorporates 10 years of additional research and fieldwork in this expanded guide to the wild orchids in the entire Northeast. Now including all of Pennsylvania and New Jersey (a state never before covered in its entirety), the guide spans the region from the southern Pennsylvania border to the northern tip of Maine, and includes features on areas of special interest: the Northwoods (bog, fen, and boreal forest), the Connecticut River Valley, central New York State, metropolitan Boston, Cape Cod and eastern Long Island, the New Jersey pinelands and Cape May, and the Alleghenies of Pennsylvania. Enhancing the text are 300+ photos illustrating the orchids and color forms and hybrids (several previously unpublished), 79 color distribution maps, along with regional orchid hunting maps, additional drawings, and original paintings by Stan Folsom. The guide covers 79 species and varieties, 88 forms, and 15 hybrids and provides full treatment of synonymy and species pairs. More experienced enthusiasts will appreciate this treatment of potentially confusing specimens and will find that the literature review provides a valuable resource to anyone interested in orchid taxonomy. The guide also provides quick access to locally useful information via state-by-state species checklists, species rarity and conservation information, regional flowering time charts, a hunting guide that divides the Northeast into regional habitats and hot spots, and a special tribute to the late Philip E. Keenan. Combining the attractive and useful tools of a field guide with additional features for serious researchers, writers, and taxonomists, this is the ideal companion for casual hikers and dedicated orchid hunters alike--a handy, authoritative guide for the northeastern states.

The Scent Of Scandal written by Craig Pittman and has been published by University Press of Florida this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-18 with True Crime categories.

After its Peruvian discovery in 2002, Phragmipedium kovachii became the rarest and most sought-after orchid in the world. Prices soared to $10,000 on the black market. Then one showed up at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, where every year more than 100,000 people visit. They come for the lush landscape on Sarasota Bay and for Selby's vast orchid collection, one of the most magnificent in the world. The collision between Selby's scientists and the smugglers of Phrag. Kovachii, a rare ladyslipper orchid hailed as the most significant and beautiful new species discovered in a century, led to search warrants, a grand jury investigation, and criminal charges. It made headlines around the country, cost the gardens hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations, and led to tremendous internal turmoil. Investigative journalist Craig Pittman unravels this tangled web to shine a spotlight on flaws in the international treaties governing trade in endangered wildlife--which may protect individual plants and animals in shipping but do little to halt the destruction of whole colonies in the wild. The Scent of Scandal unspools like a riveting mystery novel, stranger than anything in Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief or the film Adaptation. Pittman shows how some people can become so obsessed--with beauty, with profit, with fame--that they will ignore everything, even the law.
