We live amidst the untouched wilderness of the Yukon Territory in Canada, 120 kilometers north of the nearest town, Dawson City. Our closest human neighbors live 30 kilometers away. Long, cold winters with little daylight dominate our life. The lack of modern amenities makes hard physical labor necessary. We spend a good part of our days carrying out tasks like getting firewood with a sled, hauling water in buckets, and cooking dinner without electricity or plumbing. This book is based on the diary I kept for the first two years of my life in the wilderness. It documents a typical year, starting with spring: In late March nature is starting to awaken, the sun comes back, the river ice is about to break and after eight months of winter, travel by boat will soon be possible again.

We live in the Yukon Territory in Canada, 120 kilometers from Dawson City, with no road access. Our family consists of three people and one dog. Our closest human neighbors reside about 30 kilometers away.We love and respect the unspoiled wilderness around us. It is possible for humans to live in nature with little interference, yet respect its dominance and be safe and happy nonetheless. I portray our life in the wilderness of Canada's North during our daughter's first three years of life through essays and photos.

"In 1974, Terry Milos moved to rural northern Canada, to pursue her dream of homesteading. Following the seventies trend of the back-to-landers, she and her partner left the city life for what they imagined would be a simpler existence. Sometimes humorous and often insightful, North of Familiar is the story of a woman who learned to hunt, fish, and live off the land in what most would consider an utterly hostile and unbelievably cold environment. After a few months of cobbling together a living, Terry reluctantly leaves the north to further her education but with a dream of returning as a teacher. A year later Terry accepts a job in the small town of Atlin where she grows to expect the unexpected. Terry's adventures in the north push her beyond the familiar as she tries to apply her street savvy skills to negotiate a desolate mountain trail, or mush her dogs to school when the deep cold renders her car useless. North of Familiar is about coming to grips with life in the bush far away from the luxuries of the city. In Carcross, Carmacks, Dawson City and Old Crow, Terry navigates the cultural differences between her urban upbringing and the communities of Canada's Indigenous north. In spite of the harsh country, Terry survives and thrives, while raising a family and becoming a part of a strong and unique community. This story is not only entertaining and inspiring, it is also a story of joy, friendship, and change."--

Finalist for 2006 BC Book Prize - Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize Three Rivers: The Yukon's Great Boreal Wilderness is a gorgeous coffee-table book about a wilderness area so vast and so crucial to planetary survival it defies comprehension. Previously unknown to the outside world, the Yukon's Three Rivers watershed is emerging as an environmental issue of global importance--a key piece of the boreal region. The boreal forest is like a green banner draped around the northern hemisphere. It is the world's largest expanse of intact forest, covering nearly 11 percent of our planet's surface. Every breath we take is in part a gift from this immense, earth-circling ecosystem. Now the renewed Mackenzie Valley pipeline proposal, the Alaska Pipeline and escalating energy and mineral exploration in the north all threaten this last world-scale refuge of natural values--and conservationists around the world are mobilizing to defend it. Three Rivers focuses on one of the most strategic undisturbed regions left in the world, an oceanic wilderness that is under threat from gas and mining development. Packed with awe-inspiring photography, art and writings by such notables as Courtney Milne, Margaret Atwood and John Ralston Saul, this sumptuous volume offers an unforgettable tour of a natural wonderland so rich in grizzly bears, wolves, caribou, peregrine falcons and wildflowers most will have difficulty believing such a place still exists. Three Rivers is a prize to be cherished by anyone who appreciates great photography, fine writing and untrammelled nature, and a must-have for anyone who takes an interest in the fate of our beleaguered but still awe-inspiring planet.

After the Gold Rush is a collection of two wilderness stories set at the turn of the twentieth century in Canada's Yukon Territory. Dawson is an entertaining story based on life after the Klondike Gold Rush. It is the story of a family who moves from a wilderness cabin in the forest, where they trapped fur, to a more suburban life. The couple inherit a home from their Aunt Bev, a long-time, Indigenous resident of Dawson. Folow the lives of Wendy and Jason, the new homeowners, as they continue the ways of their predecessor, entertaining family and friends who live and trap fur in the surrounding area. Share their adventure to Skagway, Alaska, as they accompany a barge of goods back to Dawson for their friend, Samuel. Black Hawk and White Dove is a story of love and adventure. The recently married, Indigenous couple begin their life together in a cabin deep in the forest. With help from their fellow trappers, the newlyweds learn how to survive in this harsh and unforgiving land. Follow Black Hawk and White Dove's daily routines as they learn the ways of the bush and how nature controls the lives of those who live there. Both stories are fascinating tales, which truly capture the spirit of the Yukon. Readers are sure to enjoy these family adventures of life in a rugged land, filled with love and hope.

Wires In The Wilderness written by Bill Miller and has been published by Heritage House Publishing Co this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Business & Economics categories.

This is the tale of how Canada's high northern wilderness was brought into civilization's fold through a frail network of wires laboriously strung between poles and trees for hundreds of desolate miles. The Yukon Telegraph started in 1897, when gold was discovered in the Yukon and the government needed a faster way to communicate with its remote northern territory. The isolated residents, too, wanted a more reliable connection with the outside world. Bill Miller takes readers from the line's conception in 1899 to its abandonment in 1952 through to its status today and its potential for future generations, focusing on the colourful people who lived and worked in the area. His account, enhanced by extensive research and engaging storytelling, reveals a fascinating fragment of Canada's rich history.
