This book examines the relationship between agricultural land use and wildlife protection in two eastern African countries--Kenya and Tanzania. Although both elements are vital to the societies and economies of these countries, environmentally sensitive land-use practices and effective wildlife management are seriously lacking in Kenya and Tanzania. Within the broader context of environmental public policy, the book traces the origins of these problems in the different policy experiences of the two countries and explores their current dimensions and magnitudes. It also recommends future research and policy reforms that must be undertaken if Kenya and Tanzania are to achieve their developmental goals while avoiding environmental disaster and the extinction of their endangered wild animals. Through its analysis, the book provides a better understanding of similar conflicts wherever they appear in a world of increasing competition among threatened life forms.

Winner of the 2022 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award * Winner of the 2022 Science in Society Journalism Award (Books) * Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize “Thoughtful, insightful, and wise, Wild Souls is a landmark work.”--Ed Yong, author of An Immense World "Fascinating . . . hands-on philosophy, put to test in the real world . . . Marris believes that our idea of wildness--our obsession with purity--is misguided. No animal remains untouched by human hands . . . the science isn't the hard part. The real challenge is the ethics, the act of imagining our appropriate place in that world." --Outside Magazine From an acclaimed environmental writer, a groundbreaking and provocative new vision for our relationships with--and responsibilities toward--the planet's wild animals. Protecting wild animals and preserving the environment are two ideals so seemingly compatible as to be almost inseparable. But in fact, between animal welfare and conservation science there exists a space of underexamined and unresolved tension: wildness itself. When is it right to capture or feed wild animals for the good of their species? How do we balance the rights of introduced species with those already established within an ecosystem? Can hunting be ecological? Are any animals truly wild on a planet that humans have so thoroughly changed? No clear guidelines yet exist to help us resolve such questions. Transporting readers into the field with scientists tackling these profound challenges, Emma Marris tells the affecting and inspiring stories of animals around the globe--from Peruvian monkeys to Australian bilbies, rare Hawai'ian birds to majestic Oregon wolves. And she offers a companionable tour of the philosophical ideas that may steer our search for sustainability and justice in the non-human world. Revealing just how intertwined animal life and human life really are, Wild Souls will change the way we think about nature-and our place within it.

Natural Vs Man Caused Deaths Of Wild Animals In National Parks written by Glen F. Cole and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1975 with Animals categories.

No living creature escapes death, but it is possible to have man-caused deaths occur in advance of deaths that would otherwise occur from natural causes. A complete substitution of man-caused for natural deaths is rarely attainable because the density-independent effects of severe weather continue to cause the deaths of both young and old animals. This report is about the natural versus man-caused deaths of wild animals in national parks, including Yellowstone.

FOREWORD INDIES BRONZE WINNER, ECOLOGY & ENVIRONMENT "Diverting descriptions of flora and fauna lead into captivating lessons about biological principles, all of which are embellished with humor. A rousing read." —FOREWORD REVIEWS Through personal stories of mishap and adventure, historical vignettes, and scenic detours, professor Eli J. Knapp dissects eighteen critical forces that lie behind the earth's sixth extinction. Drawing from experiences across the globe, Knapp peeks into odd and overlooked corners of natural history, showing how ocean–going tortoises and ghost deer can both instruct and inspire. Full of humor, hope, and self–effacing scientific savvy, Knapp's exploration of our home planet provides welcome respite in a deadly serious subject. ELI J. KNAPP, PhD, has had a fascination with wildlife ever since obsessively counting deer on his bus rides to school as a kid. His wildlife interests have put him into kayaks, hot air balloons, dilapidated land rovers, and many pairs of hiking boots in search of new species and experiences. When not watching birds, Eli teaches courses in conservation biology, wildlife behavior, human ecology, and Swahili at Houghton College in western New York, where he is a tenured professor of intercultural studies and biology. His research interests spawn out of a three–year stint living in Serengeti National Park, where he studied the coexistence of people and wildlife around protected areas. Eli now enjoys sharing nature with his wife and three children, and has chronicled his adventures in The Delightful Horror of Family Birding: Sharing Nature with the Next Generation.

Life In The Valley Of Death written by Alan Rabinowitz and has been published by Island Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-30 with Nature categories.

Dubbed the Indiana Jones of wildlife science by The New York Times, Alan Rabinowitz has devoted—and risked—his life to protect nature’s great endangered mammals. He has journeyed to the remote corners of the earth in search of wild things, weathering treacherous terrain, plane crashes, and hostile governments. Life in the Valley of Death recounts his most ambitious and dangerous adventure yet: the creation of the world’s largest tiger preserve. The tale is set in the lush Hukaung Valley of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. An escape route for refugees fleeing the Japanese army during World War II, this rugged stretch of land claimed the lives of thousands of children, women, and soldiers. Today it is home to one of the largest tiger populations outside of India—a population threatened by rampant poaching and the recent encroachment of gold prospectors. To save the remaining tigers, Rabinowitz must navigate not only an unforgiving landscape, but the tangled web of politics in Myanmar. Faced with a military dictatorship, an insurgent army, tribes once infamous for taking the heads of their enemies, and villagers living on less than one U.S. dollar per day, the scientist and adventurer most comfortable with animals is thrust into a diplomatic minefield. As he works to balance the interests of disparate factions and endangered wildlife, his own life is threatened by an incurable disease. The resulting story is one of destruction and loss, but also renewal. In forests reviled as the valley of death, Rabinowitz finds new life for himself, for communities haunted by poverty and violence, and for the tigers he vowed to protect.

Wolf Nation written by Brenda Peterson and has been published by Da Capo Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-02 with Nature categories.

In the tradition of Peter Matthiessen's Wildlife in America or Aldo Leopold, Brenda Peterson tells the 300-year history of wild wolves in America. It is also our own history, seen through our relationship with wolves. The earliest Americans revered them. Settlers zealously exterminated them. Now, scientists, writers, and ordinary citizens are fighting to bring them back to the wild. Peterson, an eloquent voice in the battle for twenty years, makes the powerful case that without wolves, not only will our whole ecology unravel, but we'll lose much of our national soul.
