Na de oorlog noemde de toenmalige minister van Justitie hem 'een van de zwaarste oorlogsmisdadigers tijdens de Duitse bezetting'. Willi Lages was verantwoordelijk voor de deportatie van 75.000 Joden en de executie van zo'n 450 verzetsmensen. Hij zetelde als hoofd van de Sicherheitspolizei und Sicherheitsdienst in Amsterdam, maar zijn zeggenschap over Joodse Nederlanders strekte zich over heel het land uit. Lages had het 'handwerk' in zijn geboortestad Braunschweig geleerd, waar hij bij de straatsurveillance kwam en het in de jaren dertig tot tweede man van de Gestapo bracht. Voordat Hitler in 1933 aan de macht kwam, zaten de nazi's al drie jaar in de regering van de deelstaat Braunschweig. Lages' eerste grote opdracht sinds zijn komst naar Nederland was het opsporen en het voor de rechter brengen van de leiders van de Februaristaking. Na de oorlog werd hij ter dood veroordeeld, maar hij ontsnapte wonderwel aan executie. Dit is het verhaal van een ogenschijnlijk gewone politieman, zij het een heel ambitieuze, die op het glijdende vlak raakte en uiteindelijk massamoordenaar werd. Sytze van der Zee was tot 1996 journalist, onder meer als correspondent voor NRC Handelsblad in Duitsland, Brussel en Washington, daarna als hoofdredacteur van Het Parool. Sindsdien is hij auteur van een reeks oorlogsboeken, waaronder Potgieterlaan 7, Voor Führer, volk en vaderland, Vogelvrij. A study of Christian clerics who have been declared "Righteous among the Nations" by Yad Vashem; the number at present is close to 600. Examines activities of rescuers country by country, e.g. Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, other countries of Eastern Europe, and Italy. Aid given to persecuted Jews included protests against official antisemitism, intervention with authorities, sermons calling on congregations to help Jews, providing Jews with Christian identity papers, and hiding Jews. Stresses that the Churches did not abandon their anti-Judaic doctrines during the Holocaust, and many of the rescuers were known as antisemites before the war. Some of the clerics approved the early anti-Jewish measures of the occupiers or of the pro-Nazi governments, but protested when the deportations began. Examines the motives of the clerical rescuers, which involved compassion and a necessity to help the persecuted in the spirit of the parable of the Good Samaritan, as well as a deep respect for Jews and Judaism, which was especially typical of Protestants. Protestants in countries where they were a small and persecuted minority rendered more help to Jews during the Holocaust than the dominant Catholic or Orthodox populations. After World War II the Catholic and Protestant Churches acknowledged a measure of responsibility for the genocide of the Jews.

In summer 1942 the Germans escalated the systematic deportations of Jews from Western and Northern Europe to the extermination camps. In most of the countries under German control, the occupying forces initially focused on arresting foreign and stateless Jews, thereby securing the cooperation of local authorities. However, before long the entire Jewish population was targeted for deportation. This volume documents the parallels and differences in the persecution of Jews in occupied Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the period from summer 1942 to liberation; it records the implementation of the systematic deportation and murder of Jews from Western and Northern Europe, and it also records the rescue of more than 5,000 Danish Jews. In letters and diary entries the persecuted Jews describe their attempts to flee, life in hiding, the transit camps, and deportation transports that often took several days. In Westerbork camp in the occupied Netherlands, Bob Cahen, himself an inmate, recorded in his diary the arrival in the camp of 17,000 Jews from across the Netherlands in October 1942: ‘People arrived here herded like livestock. Some were buried beneath their luggage, others without any possessions at all, not even properly dressed. Women in poor health who had been hauled out of bed in thin nightgowns, children in undergarments and barefoot, the elderly, the ill, the infirm – more and more new people came to the camp.’ The sources in the volume show how the perpetrators attempted to dupe their victims regarding the destination of the transports, and how Jewish organizations attempted to alleviate the suffering of the deportees.
