Street Level Bureaucrats Impact On The Emergence Of Local Governance Networks written by Lisa Fischer and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-20 with Social Science categories.

This book focusses on the emergence of local governance networks and examines the role of street-level bureaucrats during this process. It aims to identify whether some organizations are favored as state partners, whereas others have a lower chance of becoming part of such networks. Four different potential logics explaining such divergencies are developed. To find out how street-level bureaucrats influence the formation of governance networks this study considers Germany as an empirical case and takes a closer look at the work of volunteer managers. To identify unequal behavior of bureaucrats, a mixed-methods design is used, including qualitative interviews as well as an innovative field experiment.

The Adventures Of Alexander Von Humboldt written by Andrea Wulf and has been published by Pantheon this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-02 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

A breathtakingly illustrated and brilliantly evocative recounting of Alexander Von Humboldt's five-year expedition in South America—from the author of Magnificent Rebels and the New York Times bestseller The Invention of Nature. Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, but his most revolutionary idea was a radical vision of nature as a complex and interconnected global force that does not exist for the use of humankind alone. His theories and ideas were profoundly influenced by a five-year exploration of South America. Now Andrea Wulf partners with artist Lillian Melcher to bring this daring expedition to life, complete with excerpts from Humboldt's own diaries, atlases, and publications. She gives us an intimate portrait of the man who predicted human-induced climate change, fashioned poetic narrative out of scientific observation, and influenced iconic figures such as Simón Bolívar, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Darwin, and John Muir. This gorgeous account of the expedition not only shows how Humboldt honed his groundbreaking understanding of the natural world but also illuminates the man and his passion

Coping With Hunger And Shortage Under German Occupation In World War Ii written by Tatjana Tönsmeyer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-22 with History categories.

This volume demonstrates how German expansion in the Second World War II led to shortages, of food and other necessities including medicine, for the occupied populations, causing many to die from severe hunger or starvation. While the various chapters look at a range of topics, the main focus is on the experiences of ordinary people under occupation; their everyday life, and how this quickly became dominated by the search for supplies and different strategies to fight scarcity. The book discusses various such strategies for surviving increasingly catastrophic circumstances, ranging from how people dealt with rationing systems, to the use of substitute products and recycling, barter, black-marketeering and smuggling, and even survival prostitution. In addressing examples from Norway to Greece and from France to Russia, this volume offers the first pan-European perspective on the history of shortage, malnutrition and hunger resulting from the war, occupation, and aggressive German exploitation policies.

Seeing Hitler S Germany written by K. Semmens and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-03-23 with History categories.

Seeing Hitler's Germany is the first fully researched, wide-ranging study of commercial tourism under the swastika. The book demonstrates how effectively the Nazi regime coordinated all German tourism organizations. At the same time, it emphasizes the apparent 'normality' of many everyday tourist experiences after 1933. These certainly helped some Germans and many foreign visitors to overlook the regime's brutality. However, tourism also celebrated the most racist, chauvinist aspects of the 'new Germany', which in turn became a normal part of being a tourist under Hitler. While violence and terror have continued to dominate many recent studies of the Third Reich, this book takes a different view. By investigating a range of 'normal' experiences - such as taking a tour, visiting a popular sightseeing attraction, reading a guidebook or sending a postcard - Seeing Hitler's Germany deepens our understanding of the popular legitimization of Nazi rule.

The shocking history of the brutal occupation of Germany after the Second World War When the Third Reich collapsed in 1945, Germany was a nation in tatters, in many places literally flattened by bombs. In the ensuing occupation, hundreds of thousands of women were raped. Hundreds of thousands of Germans and German-speakers died in the course of brutal deportations from Eastern Europe. By the end of the year, denied access to any foreign aid, Germany was literally starving to death. An astonishing 2.5 million ordinary Germans were killed in the post-Reich era. A shocking account of a massive and brutal military occupation, After the Reich draws on an array of contemporary first-person accounts of the period to offer a bold reframing of the history of World War II and its aftermath.
