Johann Joachim Winckelmann è stato uno dei più importanti intellettuali del XVIII secolo. Nel giugno del 1755 un oscuro bibliotecario di provincia, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, pubblica a Dresda a proprie spese, in una tiratura di appena 50 esemplari, un anonimo libretto dal titolo Pensieri sull’imitazione delle opere greche nella pittura e nella scultura. Questo breve testo incontrò subito un’enorme fortuna, tanto da circolare addirittura in copie manoscritte, e diede impulso alle più potenti speculazioni dell’epoca: Mendelssohn, Lessing, Herder e Goethe lo considereranno un classico, e persino gli acerrimi nemici del Classicismo di Weimar, come Heinse o Hirt, non poterono fare a meno di confrontarsi con esso. Né si sottrassero a un doveroso omaggio i grandi del Romanticismo e dell’Idealismo filosofico, da Moritz a Schelling, da Schlegel a Hegel. Ma cosa rese – e rende tuttora – tanto ammaliante l’“opera prima” di Winckelmann? Il fatto che i Pensieri sull’imitazione sono il frutto di una complessa strategia retorica attraverso cui il filosofo impostava il modello di un’utopia estetica cui faranno riferimento intere generazioni, l’esperto d’arte importava in Germania la trattatistica italiana, francese e inglese inventando un nuovo modo di fare storia, e, infine, l’antiquario fondava la moderna archeologia. La presente edizione raccoglie i Pensieri sull’imitazione ma anche l’Epistola sui Pensieri e il Commento ai Pensieri, oltre ad alcuni frammenti di fondamentale importanza per comprendere tutte le potenzialità di una costellazione discorsiva che ha posto le basi per l’estetica moderna.

Der zweisprachige, deutsch-italienische Band geht der Frage nach, inwiefern Rezensionen in Zeitschriften zwischen 1700 und 1850 zu einem Begriff der ‚Weltliteratur‘ beitrugen, wobei ‚Weltliteratur‘ als Diskursanker rekonstruiert wird, der von Beginn an durchaus widersprüchlich eingesetzt und verstanden wurde. Bisher ausgeblendet geblieben ist die Frage nach den kommunikativen Bedingungen, die einer transnationalen Verständigung über Literatur zugrundelagen. Die Beiträge kehren zu den fundierenden Konstellationen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts zurück, um einen Aspekt in den Blick zu nehmen, der bisher erstaunlich vernachlässigt wurde: jenen der medialen Voraussetzungen des Weltliteratur-Diskurses. Dies ist umso erstaunlicher, als Goethe den Begriff der ‚Weltliteratur‘ nicht von ungefähr mit Blick auf die neuen Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten prägte, die das schnellste Massenmedium seiner Zeit, die periodische Presse, bereithielt. Mit Blick auf eine breite Palette von europäischen Zeitschriften wird die Rezension in ihrer kommunikationssteuernden Bedeutung für die frühe Aushandlung von ‚Weltliteratur‘ sichtbar gemacht. In the decades before the rise of the Third Reich, "Secret Germany" was a phrase used by the circle of writers around the poet Stefan George to describe a collective political and poetic project: the introduction of the highest values of art into everyday life, the secularization of myth and the mythologization of history. In this book, Furio Jesi takes up the term in order to trace the contours of that political, artistic, and aesthetic thread as it runs through German literary and artistic culture in the period--which, in the 1930s, became absorbed by Nazism as part of its prophecy of a triumphant future. Drawing on thinkers like Carl Jung and writers such as Thomas Mann and Rainer Maria Rilke, Jesi reveals a literary genre that was transformed, tragically, into a potent political myth.
