Shows how the response of a lake to wind depends on the parameters describing wind strength, basin size, and stratification. The nature of this interaction is investigated, and scales for velocity shear, stable interface thickness, and times for internal seiching, internal wave decay, and vertical and longitudinal mixing are developed.Uses this to obtain an analytical solution for the combined problem of entrainment and motion, and a computer algorithm parametizing the effects of shear production on mixed layer deepening.

The purpose of this study is to improve the definition and determination of wind-induced mixing in lakes caused by mean shear in the surface drift current. This study analyzes existing models as they are applied to this problem, develops a new criterion for classifying lake/events, and formulates an improved method for modeling mixing in lakes, specifically modeling the effects of the mean-shear mixing mechanism. Existing models do not specifically include mean shear mixing. The main contribution of this research is a new framework from which an improved model of wind-induced mixing in lakes is developed. The new model includes mixing rates that vary throughout a wind-mixing event. A new conceptual picture of wind-induced flow is also presented that includes four separate flow types: unsteady slab, steady slab, unsteady return, and steady return flow. Each flow type is associated with a different mixing rate. Estimates of the time scales for each of the four flow types are given. A new classification of lake/events based on the predominant mechanisms of wind-induced mixing is also proposed. The new classification, using values of wDh/L 2 and L/h, categorizes lake/events as small, transition, or large. The new classification indicates which mixing mechanisms should be modeled and the duration of the computation time steps in order to model them successfully. Lastly, calibration factors are presented for the model THERM applied to Lake Lacawac, a physically small lake in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania using daily input data and daily computation steps.

Lakes and reservoirs hold about 90% of the world's surface fresh water, but overuse, water withdrawal and pollution of these bodies puts some one billion people at risk. The Encyclopedia of Lakes and Reservoirs reviews the physical, chemical and ecological characteristics of lakes and reservoirs, and describes their uses and environmental state trends in different parts of the world. Superbly illustrated throughout, it includes some 200 entries in a range of topics, including acidification, artificialisation, canals, climate change effects, dams, dew ponds, drainage, eutrofication, evaporation, fisheries, hydro-electric power, nutrients, organic pollution, paleolimnology, reservoir capacities and depths, sedimentation, water resources and more.

A lake, as a body of water, is in continuous interaction with the rocks and soils in its drainage basin, the atmosphere, and surface and groundwaters. Human industrial and agricultural activities introduce new inputs and processes into lake systems. This volume is a selection of ten contributions dealing with diverse aspects of lake systems, including such subjects as the geological controls of lake basins and their histories, mixing and circulation patterns in lakes, gaseous exchange between the water and atmosphere, and human input to lakes through atmospheric precipitation and surficial runoff. This work was written with a dual goal in mind: to serve as a textbook and to provide professionals with in-depth expositions and discussions of the more important aspects of lake systems.

If present trends continue, most climatologists agree that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will have doubled by the year 2050. This increase in CO 2 will have a major effect on the global climate and substantially alter the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of lakes throughout the world. In recent years, it has become clear that year-to-year changes in the weather have a major effect on the seasonal dynamics of lakes. Many water quality problems that were once regarded as "local" phenomena are now known to be influenced by changes in the weather that operate on a regional or even global scale. For example, blooms of toxic blue-green algae can be induced by prolonged reductions in the intensity of wind-mixing as well as increased supplies of nutrients. Long-term studies in the English Lake District have shown that many of these variations are quasi-cyclical in nature and can be related to long-term changes in the distribution of atmospheric pressure over the Atlantic Ocean. It is not yet clear what effect these changes have on the dynamics of European lakes but much of the historical data required to extend these analyses to continental Europe is already available. In the early 1970s the International Biological Programme served as a particularly effective focus for comparative limnological research in eastern as well as western Europe.
