Even the most devoted Mac OS X user may need to use Windows XP, or may just be curious about XP and its applications. This Short Cut is a concise guide for OS X users who need to quickly get comfortable and become productive with Windows XP basics on their Macs. It covers: Security Networking Applications Mac users can easily install and use Windows thanks to Boot Camp and Parallels Desktop for Mac. Boot Camp lets an Intel-based Mac install and boot Windows XP on its own hard drive partition. Parallels Desktop for Mac uses virtualization technology to run Windows XP (or other operating systems like Linux) at the same time as OS X. But once you've installed Windows, then what? This guide by Todd Ogasawara, a Microsoft MVP and Mac journeyman, will help you unite Windows software with Mac hardware. (Note that this Short Cut focuses on using Parallels Desktop for Mac as the main method of using Windows XP on a Mac.) The format used in this Short Cut lets you read and absorb small chunks of Windows XP information, as they relate to your OS X experience. It may make sense to quickly skim though the pages to get a general sense about how to use Windows XP and look at some of the screenshots. Then, feel free to jump around and focus on the Windows XP topic section that interests you at the moment.

Installing and running Windows on an Intel-based Mac has become commonplace, but doing so most effectively still requires expert knowledge. Fortunately, the new Take Control of Running Windows on a Mac, Third Edition" brings readers 167 pages of hard-won advice, helping readers determine the best installation option for their needs, install Windows easily, and keep Windows secure, properly backed up, and working optimally. Written by cross-platform guru Joe Kissell and based on innumerable hours of research, the title covers Windows XP and Windows Vista, and it gives procedures for working with virtualization programs VMware Fusion, Parallels Desktop, and VirtualBox, along with Apple's dual-boot solution, Boot Camp. For each option, Kissell provides instructions for installing the software and for installing Windows, and he goes further by explaining how to make peripherals - like mice, keyboards, and printers - behave properly, how to share files between the Mac and Windows environments, and how to integrate the Mac and Windows interfaces. Kissell also looks at software that makes it possible to run Windows programs on a Mac without installing Windows itself, and he explains methods of acquiring Windows, a topic made confusing by Microsoft's many licensing options and activation mechanism. The $10 ebook comes with coupons for $8 off the price of VMware Fusion and $5 off Parallels Desktop. It can be purchased at http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/windows-?on-mac - a free sample version and the introductory text are also available at that link. Questions answered in the ebook include: What are 15 things that you can do in Windows, but not on the Mac? How can I get a copy of Windows XP or Vista that will work on a Mac? How can I set things up so that Windows won't bog down? How should I handle partitioning for my Windows installation? How do I avoid and handle activation hassles? Boot Camp is free with Leopard, but what are the pros and cons to using it? How can I run one copy of Windows with both Boot Camp and virtualization software? Should I run VMware Fusion, Parallels Desktop, or VirtualBox? What's the best way to right-click in Windows? How do I print from my Windows software? How do I make my Bluetooth devices work in Windows? What is FAT32, and why might it matter to me? What are the coolest new features in Parallels Desktop 4? What's interesting about the different views in VMware Fusion?

For a long time, a lot of Windows users have been clamoring for the opportunity to run the Mac OS X operating system on their Windows PCs. As Mac OS X was designed to run on a different CPU architecture (PowerPC), running Mac OS X directly on Intel's CPU would not work. It wasn't until recently that PC users saw a ray of hope, when Apple announced that it was moving to Intel's CPU architecture and would hence port Mac OS X to run natively on Intel's x86 CPU architecture. However, the joy was short-lived, as Mac OS X can still run properly only on Apple's customized hardware, not commodity PCs that run Windows. (There are hacks to make Mac OS X run natively on PC hardware, but that is not the legal way to do it). The only logical means of running the Mac OS X operating system on your Windows PC is to run it in an emulator capable of emulating the PowerPC CPU architecture. While popular virtualization software programs like Virtual PC and VMware have been around in the market for a long time, none support running Mac OS X. Fortunately, an open source project, PearPC, makes it possible to run Mac OS X on Windows. PearPC is an architecture-independent PowerPC platform emulator. (It is released under the General Public License (GPL)-a freely used free software license.) PearPC emulates the PowerPC architecture by using a JIT (Just-in-Time) emulator to dynamically translate PowerPC code into x86 code. In this Short Cut, you will learn how to install Mac OS X on your Windows PC using PearPC. I will walk you through all the steps needed to successfully get Mac OS X working, as well as configure additional settings to make Mac OS functional.
