In Career Stories, Juliette Rogers considers a body of largely unexamined novels from the Belle Époque that defy the usual categories allowed the female protagonist of the period. While most literary studies of the Belle Époque (1880–1914) focus on the conventional housewife or harlot distinction for female protagonists, the heroines investigated in Career Stories are professional lawyers, doctors, teachers, writers, archeologists, and scientists. In addition to the one well-known woman writer from the Belle Époque, Colette, this study will expand our knowledge of relatively unknown authors, including Gabrielle Reval, Marcelle Tinayre, and Colette Yver, who actively participated in contemporary debates on women's possible roles in the public domain and in professional careers during this period. Career Stories seeks to understand early twentieth century France by examining novels written about professional women, bourgeois and working-class heroines, and the particular dilemmas that they faced. This book contributes a new facet to literary histories of the Belle Époque: a subgenre of the bildungsroman that flourished briefly during the first decade of the twentieth century in France. Rogers terms this subgenre the female berufsroman, or novel of women's professional development. Career Stories will change the way we think about the Belle Époque and the interwar period in French literary history, because these women writers and their novels changed the direction that fiction writing would take in post-World War I France.

This book concentrates on three novels set in the rapidly changing white-collar milieu of Berlin during the Weimar Republic. All three novels are concerned with the disarray, anguish and tension of commercial "Angestellten" - figures who are involved in selling, advertising, and other growing consumer-orientated industries. Focusing on the socially critical import of the narrative and characterization, it is argued that much of the everyday experiences of the protagonists is shaped by commercial influences which penetrate their jobs, their places of entertainment and their private and public relationships in very subtle, but nonetheless powerful and often damaging ways. The study not only emphasizes connections and parallels between the novels which have frequently been overlooked. By examining contemporary developments in the Berlin entertainment world, the commercialist ethos and the architecture of "Neue Sachlichkeit," it also sets them in several interrelated contexts yielding new perspectives on the relationship between the novels and the society and culture of Weimar Berlin.

Natürlich können wir die globale Pandemie, den russischen Überfall auf die Ukraine und die eskalierende Klimakrise nicht wegdiskutieren, aber wir wollen das Argument umdrehen: Gerade weil unsere Gegenwart von verheerenden Ereignissen geprägt ist, sollten wir uns jetzt den Katastrophen der Vergangenheit widmen. Und ergründen, wie die Menschheit damit umgegangen ist. Denn Seuchen, Stürme, Erdbeben oder Vulkanausbrüche sind Konstanten der Geschichte. Sie sind existenzielle Erfahrungen, die sich tief in unser kulturelles Gedächtnis eingegraben haben und deren Bewältigung viel über die Mentalität einer Gesellschaft verrät. Der Schriftsteller Jörg-Uwe Albig hat diesem Thema einen Essay gewidmet, der konsequenterweise bei der Urkatastrophe beginnt: der biblischen Sintflut. Mit der Umwelt- und Klimahistorikerin Eleonora Rohland haben wir dagegen über eine andere, aber nicht weniger wichtige Facette gesprochen: Inwieweit hat der Mensch durch den technischen Fortschritt selbst Unheil über sich gebracht? Nicht nur die Todeszone um das havarierte Kernkraftwerk von Tschernobyl kündet davon, auch der menschengemachte Klimawandel, der unter anderem zu einer Häufung extremer Wetterereignisse führt, legt diese Frage nahe. Nun taugt die Geschichte nur selten als stimmungsaufhellendes Mittel, trotzdem erwartet Sie auf den folgenden Seiten keine reine Aneinanderreihung an Schrecklichkeiten. Wir zeigen in unseren Artikeln auch, wie die Menschheit immer wieder ihren Überlebenswillen bewiesen hat – und aus Katastrophen ihre Lehren gezogen hat. Nicht zuletzt porträtieren wir vier Frauen und Männer, deren Taten man durchaus als heldenhaft bezeichnen kann.
