Arne Grøn’s reading of Søren Kierkegaard’s authorship revolves around existential challenges of human identity. The 35 essays that constitute this book are written over three decades and are characterized by combining careful attention to the augmentative detail of Kierkegaard’s text with a constant focus on issues in contemporary philosophy. Contrary to many approaches to Kierkegaard’s authorship, Grøn does not read Kierkegaard in opposition to Hegel. The work of the Danish thinker is read as a critical development of Hegelian phenomenology with particular attention to existential aspects of human experience. Anxiety and despair are the primary existential phenomena that Kierkegaard examines throughout his authorship, and Grøn uses these negative phenomena to argue for the basically ethical aim of Kierkegaard’s work. Mit seinem Buch "Wie wir denken, so leben wir" (As A Man Thinketh) liefert James Allen nichts Geringeres als einen Schlüssel zu einem selbstbestimmten Leben. Er macht kein Geheimnis daraus, dass er diesen Schlüssel nicht "erfunden" hat. Vielmehr hat er ihn wiederentdeckt: in alten Schriften wie der Bibel und dem Dhammapada (einer Anthologie von Aussprüchen des historischen Buddha), in traditionellen westlichen und östlichen Philosophien und Denkweisen. Was er schließlich zu Papier brachte, beruhte auf den Erkenntnissen, die er aus diesen Lehren gezogen hatte, und vor allem auf seinen persönlichen Erfahrungen. Denn James Allen war alles andere als ein Theoretiker. Er hat sich kurz gefasst, und das ist ein Vorteil, denn ein Buch wie dieses liest man nicht einmal, sondern wieder und wieder, bis das vermittelte Wissen sich dem Unbewussten eingeprägt hat und zur verlässlichen Grundlage des eigenen Denkens und Handelns geworden ist. Das ist wichtig, denn erst dann kann es seine Wirkung entfalten und zu nachhaltigen Veränderungen führen. "As A Man Thinketh" war James Allens drittes Buch und sein erfolgreichstes. Es hat den Autor berühmt gemacht, wenn auch erst nach dessen Ableben, als sich das Buch im Lauf der Jahre nicht nur in England sondern rund um den Globus verbreitete. Wenn ein Buch über hundert Jahre nach seiner Erstveröffentlichung im Jahr 1902 noch immer millionenfach gekauft und gelesen wird, kommt das sicher nicht von ungefähr, sondern ist ein deutlicher Hinweis darauf, dass es Substanz hat und zeitloses Wissen vermittelt. Vielleicht wird das Buch deshalb heute noch gelesen, weil der Autor sein Wissen darin kurz und bündig vermittelt, ohne darauf zu schielen, dass ein dickeres Buch mehr Geld einbringen würde. Deshalb braucht er das, was er zu sagen hat, nicht künstlich aufzuplustern. Vielleicht liegt der lang anhaltende Erfolg aber auch daran, dass James Allen einer der ersten Autoren war, der die Macht der Gedanken als Buchthema entdeckt hatte. Man spürt, dass er selbst glaubt, was er verkündet. Das verleiht dem Buch Authentizität. Vielleicht stößt sein Buch aber auch schlicht und einfach deshalb über so lange Zeit auf Interesse, weil der Autor sich das so ausgemalt hat. Wenn Ihnen dies völlig unplausibel erscheint, liegt das womöglich daran, dass Sie es noch nicht gelesen haben. Nach der Lektüre sehen Sie die Idee wahrscheinlich mit anderen Augen.

This contributed volume explores equity and social justice within the field of mathematics education. In part one, Helga Jungwirth's introductory chapter provides a strong theoretical overview that is based in actual classroom behaviors and a typology that classifies the various interpretations found within this volume. Also in part one, Laurie Hart discusses developments in equity research in the United States. Part two focuses on results of studies about social justice and their impact on learning in mathematics classrooms in various parts of the world. For example, in a chapter on Peru, social justice does not just encompass gender, but also inequalities in opportunities to learn, such as problems of resources, living and social conditions, communal demands and language needs. And, part three focuses on computers as a resource to mathematics teaching. The contributors raise several important social justice issues which have previously remained unresearched. Although there are a number of chapters specifically dealing with gender, many of the authors use one of the following strategies: their gender-specific questions are set in a wider socio-cultural context, they challenge what have threatened to become false orthodoxies, or they raise other important issues. These other issues include the meaning of democratic citizenship for mathematics classrooms, the links between parents and children learning mathematics, and the preconceptions of some teachers of underprivileged students in Australia. Other chapters explore different forms of classroom communication, participation, and assessment. The pieces on computers state that there is still not enough research to conclude whether computers in the mathematics classrooms are supportive of, or detrimental to, the learning of all students. The one thing on which every author in this volume does agree is that social justice in mathematics education has still not been attained, but that we must strive toward it to improve educational practices and society in general.
