Sie erweitern und festigen ihre Fähigkeiten im Bereich der Addition und Subtraktion im Zahlenraum bis 100. Sie entdecken und beschreiben, wie Grund- und Decksteine zusammenhängen und wie sie sich in Abhängigkeit zueinander verändern. Dies können einige SuS altersentsprechend in Ansätzen begründen. Sie benutzen hierfür entsprechend gelernte Fachbegriffe. Bei "Zahlenmauern" handelt es sich um ein substanzielles Aufgabenformat, das Möglichkeiten zum aktiven Entdecken, Forschen und zunehmend strukturiertem Probieren bietet und so Unterricht im Sinne des aktiv entdeckendem Lernen ermöglicht. Kinder sollen nicht durch "bunte Bilder", sondern durch mathematische Problemstellungen motiviert werden, sich mit Aufgaben intensiv auseinanderzusetzen. Die SuS erhalten durch produktives Üben "Einsichten in Gesetzmäßigkeiten und Zusammenhänge". Auch diese Möglichkeit bieten die Zahlenmauern. Problemorientierte Fragestellungen können am Beispiel der Zahlenmauern in unterschiedlichen Niveaustufen erarbeitet werden. Somit ermöglicht das Aufgabenformat eine natürliche Differenzierung: Die SuS bekommen dieselbe Aufgabenstellung und arbeiten am gleichen arithmetischen Gegenstand.
