Wireless personal communication services (PCS) and broadband networking for delivery of multimedia information represent two well-established trends in telecommunications. Given that ATM is now viewed as a universal base technology for broadband networks, it is reasonable to consider extension of standard ATM services into next-generation microcellular wireless and PCS scenarios. In this M. Sc. thesis, I focus on the mobility management and quality of service (QoS) management in such a wireless ATM system. Several algorithms are investigated for the wireless ATM model, which were developed within OPNET. One is an error-free handoff algorithm that allows data to follow the mobile user. When a mobile user moves from one micro-cell to another, the error-free handoff algorithm is implemented to guarantee continuous communication without loss of packets. A replication algorithm was implemented when the user transmits a handoff request to make the data available at the next location of the mobile user. Dynamic-power-control and automatic-frequency-hopping algorithms were investigated to guarantee the quality of ser ice. When at least one channel is idle, the automatic-frequency-hopping algorithm is implemented to avoid interference. If there are not enough channels to hop to, a dynamic-power-control algorithm is used to ensure the quality of service. The decision control algorithm is neural network based. Simulation studies indicate that the intelligence of a neural network provides for more efficient management than alternative techniques. Finally, a variance fractal dimension method was investigated to estimate the traffic and provide control descriptors, which can be used to make network management more efficient.

ATM is regarded as the next high speed multimedia networking paradigm. Mobile computing, which is a confluence of mobile communications, computing and networks, is changing the way people work. Wireless ATM combines wireless and ATM technologies to provide mobility support and multimedia services to mobile users. Wireless ATM and Ad-Hoc Networks: Protocols and Architectures, a consolidated reference work, presents the state of the art in wireless ATM technology. It encompasses the protocol and architectural aspects of Wireless ATM networks. The topics covered in this book include: mobile communications and computing, fundamentals of ATM and Wireless ATM, mobile routing and switch discovery, handover protocol design and implementation, mobile quality of service, unifying handover strategy for both unicast and multicast mobile connections, and roaming between Wireless ATM LANs. A novel routing protocol for ad-hoc mobile networks (also known as Cambridge Ad-hoc) is also presented in this book along with information about ETSI HIPERLAN, the RACE Mobile Broadband System, and SUPERNET. This timely book is a valuable reference source for researchers, scientists, consultants, engineers, professors and graduate students working in this new and exciting field.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are widely considered to be the new generation of high speed communication systems both for broadband public information highways and for local and wide area private networks. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to simplify the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to limit transmission delays. However, to support such diverse services on one integrated communication network, it is most essential, through careful engineering, to achieve a fruitful balance amongst the conflicting requirements of different quality of service constraints ensuring that one service does not have adverse implications on another. Over recent years there has been a great deal of progress in research and development of ATM technology, but there are still many interesting and important problems to be resolved such as traffic characterisation and control, routing and optimisation, ATM switching techniques and the provision of quality of service. This book presents thirty-two research papers, both from industry and academia, reflecting latest original achievements in the theory and practice of performance modelling of ATM networks worldwide. These papers were selected, subject to peer review, from those submitted as extended and revised versions out of fifty-nine shorter papers presented at the Second IFIP Workshop on "Performance Modelling and Evaluation of ATM Networks" July 4-7, 1994, Bradford University. At least three referees from the scientific committee and externally were involved in the selection of each paper.

Mobility Management & Route Optimization issues for Wireless Networks are presented in detail. IP-based Networks, PSTN-based Networks and ATM-based Networks backbones have been considered for developing mobility management technique. In IP-based backbone network, a route optimization scheme is proposed to improve the performance of Mobile IP having some apparent drawbacks like triangular routing problem, home agent overloading etc. An encapsulation at one- level up in the hierarchy is performed to improve the handoff delay and the simulation is carried out on NS-2 simulator. In PSTN-based backbone networks, a protocol is proposed and an analytical modeling is carried out where the location registration can be finished prior to the arrival of a MT at the new network to support the inter-system roaming. For an ATM-based backbone network, a design and prototyping of a mobility support ATM network is proposed to improve the handoff time, cell loss and call setup time. Further, an improved mobile location management for wireless ATM networks is proposed and analyzed to improve the performance in terms of number of hops required for location managements.
