Excerpt from Wireless Telegraphy an Elementary Treatise Wireless Telegraphy is a wonderful and fascinating subject. It has come to abide. It is ubiquitous in range, and there is no comer of the world, above the level of conductors, which is exempt from the play and passage of its etherial waves. The laws obeyed by these waves, when stated without embellishment, vie with fiction in wonderment and interest. The possibilities which these waves hold in store for the benefit of man can at present only be guessed at, but they are probably great, judging from the importance of the work already done. It has been the author's endeavor to present the elementary facts concerning the nature and operation of wireless telegraphy in language as free from technicality as possible, and without the use of algebra, so as to permit of the book being submitted to the consideration of persons not technically versed in electricity or its applications. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III MAGNETISM AND ELECTRICITY Having paved the way for a consideration of electromagnetic waves by a few outlines of sound waves in air, we may now fitly turn attention to magnetism and electricity. Wind and Its Energy Everyone is familiar with the fact that wind is an active or disturbed state of the atmosphere, a movement of the air. We ordinarily understand wind to be a uniform movement of the air in any one given direction, and we ordinarily understand by eddies or gusts, twisting or vortical movements of the air, but, in general, wind may include both linear movement and vortical movement, since one cannot occur in the atmosphere without involving the other. The material for the creation of a wind is always present, for this material is the air itself. We only need to energise the air in a particular way, to make it move forward. Energy must be expended in producing a wind, and energy resides in the wind. If we employ a hand-fan to produce a local breeze, we must expend muscular energy, or do work on the fan, to force the air into motion, and the air once set in motion contains energy or can do work by moving, for example, light obstacles in its path. Consequently, we may say that wind is air, plus energy given to it in a particular way. Air is a material fluid. It forms an ocean on the surface of this earth, and we live at or near the bottom of this air-ocean. Air gravitates, or pulls upon the mass of the earth. Each individual atom of air gravitates, and the sum total of all the individual pulls exerted on the earth amounts to a pressure of about 1 kilogramme per square centimeter of surface (14.25 Ibs. per sq. inch). The Invisible Ether It is generally believed that all space, including the interior of solid bodies, is permeated by an immateria...

Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Wireless Telegraphy IN presenting this Handbook, the author has endeavoured to explain, in the simplest possible manner, the theory and practice of Wireless Telegraphy. It has been his aim to make the subject intelligible to persons who do not possess much technical knowledge, and to be at the same time brief and accurate. The book has been so arranged as to be useful as a reference book on the subject for students and amateurs in this special branch of electrical science. Excerpt from Works on Wireless Telegraphy and Allied Subjects The reader who wishes to Obtain more highly technical information on this fascinating subject has the choice Of many books. The Author's two treatises, viz. An Elementary Manual Of Radiotelegraphy and Radio telephony and The Principles of Electric Wave Telegraphy and Telephony will provide this assistance for those possessed of some physical and mathematical knowledge. In conclusion the Author desires to express his thanks to Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company, and also to Mr. Duddell for their kindness in permitting the use of illustrations belonging to them. The favourable reception given to this little book and consequent rapid exhaustion of the First Edition has enabled the Author to remove in this Second Edition a few little oversights in correcting the proofs of the First, and also to add to the final chapter one or two paragraphs bringing the general information on the subject up to date. Excerpt from Wireless Telegraphy: Its History, Theory and Practice Since it frequently happens that didactic treatises fall into the hands of the untaught and the simplest of texts are sometimes found useful by the most highly trained specialist, it was pro posed that all the various phases of the subject under consideration should receive due attention and, by connecting them in series, a complete and logical account would necessarily follow and one that would bring the state of the art down to the present time. Excerpt from A Treatise Upon Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony While serving as Inspector for the United Wireless Telegraph Company, the attention of the author was frequently called to the inability of operators to efficiently use the apparatus installed for Radio communication over which they had supervision. This inability could almost invariably be traced to either a misapplication of the principles governing the action of certain instruments of the equipment, or a deficiency of knowledge concerning these principles. Many operators, having had no previous training, were unable to master the technical explanations given by some of the prominent authors of treatises upon Wireless Telegraphy on account of the mathematical reasoning employed by them. While it is impossible to go deeply into the study of Wireless Telegraphy without the aid of higher mathematics, an attempt will be made in this book to explain in as unmathematical terms as possible a few of the fundamental principles and to illustrate their application to the solution of practical problems which arise daily in the routine of wireless operating. Fortunate indeed is the student of wireless telegraphy who has had the opportunity of studying "The Principles of Electric Wave Telegraphy and Telephony", by J. A. Fleming, and the "Principles of Wireless Telegraphy", by Geo. W. Pierce, and it is on account of the clearness of the explanations and the reliability of information given in the above mentioned books that they will be quoted in the following pages. The author wishes to mention his obligation to the Wireless News and Publishing Co., Sampson Publishing Co., Clapp-Eastham Co. and the Electro Importing Co. for permission to use certain illustrations furnished by them; to the Standard Wireless Equipment Co. for the loan of equipment tested; to Mr. J. M. Baskerville for the loan of a number of photographs of equipment which have materially assisted in explanations; and finally to Mr. G. M. Dodge, whose friendly assistance has made the publication of this book possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
