Gerade ihm und den Filmemachern, die zur Berliner Schule gezählt werden, gelingt es immer wieder, die festgefahrenen Bilderwelten des konventionellen deutschen Films der späten 1990er und 2000er Jahre in immer neuen Ausformungen konsequent aufzureißen und damit der entmündigenden Serviceleistung einer klassischen synchronischen und reihenhaften Sensationsbild- und Unterhaltungsmaschinerie entgegenzuhalten. In diesen Filmen dominieren Langsamkeit und Genauigkeit das alltägliche Geschehen. Und man könnte auch sagen: Hier im Kino der Berliner Schule gibt es eine nachhaltige Bilderwelt, die insbesondere auch mit dem Unsichtbaren zu arbeiten weiß. Auch auf narrativer Ebene findet sich derlei Innovatives, wenn Geschichte und Politik, wie in Christian Petzolds Die innere Sicherheit , weitergedacht, transformiert und über Neuland aus Wiesen, Wälder, Straßen und Häuser ins Private getragen wird. Dort kann sie einer unmittelbaren Erfahrung ausgesetzt werden, die auf das tatsächliche, reale Erleben des Individuums in Raum und Zeit rekurriert, und somit produktiv gemacht werden kann. Durch das Fragmentarische, sowohl der Zeichenmaterie, wie auch der repräsentierten Inhalte, reflektiert Petzold mit seinem Film die Heterogenität von Wirklichkeit in ganzheitlicher Weise. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit soll untersucht werden, wie in Petzolds Die innere Sicherheit Geschichte, beziehungsweise ein Geschichtsbewusstsein, konstruiert wird, dass – so die Arbeitshypothese - die interaktive Beziehung zwischen Konzeption und Wirklichkeit, zwischen Bewusstsein und Handlung und nicht die kausale Reihung von Ereignissen der Vergangenheit verfolgt. Es wird der Annahme nachgegangen, wie Petzold Verweise auf eine historische Wirklichkeit streut, um sie gleichsam prismatisch zu brechen und damit Geschichte als kollektives Wirklichkeitsbild produktiv zu öffnen, indem die erlebte Wirklichkeit auf der Leinwand mit der eigenen Erfahrung in einen gleichberechtigten Dialog tritt.

This book presents a new history of German film from 1980-2010, a period that witnessed rapid transformations, including intensified globalization, a restructured world economy, geopolitical realignment, and technological change, all of which have affected cinema in fundamental ways. Rethinking the conventional periodization of German film history, Baer posits 1980-rather than 1989-as a crucial turning point for German cinema's embrace of a new market orientation and move away from the state-sponsored film culture that characterized both DEFA and the New German Cinema. Reading films from East, West, and post-unification Germany together, Baer argues that contemporary German cinema is characterized most strongly by its origins in and responses to advanced capitalism. Informed by a feminist approach and in dialogue with prominent theories of contemporary film, the book places a special focus on how German films make visible the neoliberal recasting of gender and national identities around the new millennium.

The contemporary German directors collectively known as the "Berlin School" constitute the most significant filmmaking movement to come out of Germany since the New German Cinema of the 1970s, not least because their films mark the emergence of a new film language. The Berlin School filmmakers, including Christian Petzold, Thomas Arslan, Angela Schanelec, Christoph Hochhäusler, Ulrich Köhler, Benjamin Heisenberg, Maren Ade, and Valeska Grisebach, are reminiscent of the directors of the New German Autorenkino and of French cinéma des auteurs of the 1960s. This is the first book-length study of the Berlin School in any language. Its central thesis - that the movement should be regarded as a "counter-cinema" - is built around the unusual style of realism employed in its films, a realism that presents images of a Germany that does not yet exist. Abel concludes that it is precisely how these films' images and sounds work that renders them political: they are political not because they are message-driven films but because they are made politically, thus performing a "redistribution of the sensible" - a direct artistic intervention in the way politics partitions ways of doing and making, saying and seeing. Marco Abel is Professor of English and Film Studies at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

First published in 1977 in the US and Britain to universal critical acclaim, Hitler's Children quickly became a world-wide best seller, translated into many other languages, including Japanese. It tells the story of the West German terrorists who emerged out of the 'New Left' student protest movement of the late 1960s. With bombs and bullets they started killing in the name of 'peace'. Almost all of them came from prosperous, educated families. They were 'Hitler's children' not only in that they had been born in or immediately after the Nazi period - some of their parents having been members of the Nazi party - but also because they were as fiercely against individual freedom as the Nazis were. Their declared ideology was Communism. They were beneficiaries of both American aid and the West German economic miracle. Despising their immeasurable gifts of prosperity and freedom, they 'identified' themselves with Third World victims of wars, poverty and oppression, whose plight they blamed on 'Western imperialism'. In reality, their terrorist activity was for no better cause than self-expression. Their dreams of leading a revolution were ended when one after another of them died in shoot-outs with the police, or was blown up with his own bomb, or was arrested, tried, and condemned to long terms of imprisonment. All four leaders of the Red Army Faction (dubbed 'the Baader-Meinhof gang' by journalists) committed suicide in prison.

The Death of Classical Cinema uncovers the extremely rich yet insufficiently explored dialogue between classical and modernist cinema, examining the work of three classical filmmakers—Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, and Vincente Minnelli—and the films they made during the decline of the traditional Hollywood studio system. Faced with the significant challenges posed by alternative art cinema and modernist filmmaking practices in the early 1960s, these directors responded with films that were self-conscious attempts at keeping pace with the developments in film modernism. These films—Lang's The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse, Hitchcock's Marnie, and Minnelli's Two Weeks in Another Town—were widely regarded as failures at the time and bolstered critics' claims concerning the irrelevance of their directors in relation to contemporary filmmaking. However, author Joe McElhaney sheds new light on these films by situating them in relation to such acclaimed modernist works of the period as Godard's Contempt, Fellini's La dolce vita, Antonioni's Red Desert, and Resnais's Last Year at Marienbad. He finds that these modernist films, rather than being diametrically opposed in form to the work of Hitchcock, Lang, and Minnelli, are in fact profoundly linked to them.
