When the tragic events of 9-11 struck, Keith was in the Shenandoah National Park on the Appalachian Trail (AT) and I was on a bus to join him that day to hike through the Park. It was quite a day getting to him since my bus had been halted short of my stop. Thanks to a friend with a car, I did join him where the AT crossed a road. We decided to continue our hike in spite of the events because the terrorists wanted to disrupt our way of life and we did not want them to succeed. Keith later finished the entire AT in Georgia. We have hiked many miles together. One thing Keith and I have experienced in common is that God has taught us spiritual truths consistent with the Bible while walking the trails. Neither Keith nor I are wise on our own. Any wisdom that is shared in these devotional stories is from God and the Bible. It is our hope that these lessons of wisdom gained on our hikes will be helpful to you as a reader on your own trail of life. The inspirational stories in Wisdom from the Trail can be meaningful for devotional times, for encouragement, for wisdom and for message illustrations. We pray that God will use these words to become living manna for each reader. ~Wayne Sheridan

What Good Dads Want Great Sons To Know In these pages you will find “The Trail” that all men, young and old, must seek... as sons. Whether you had a great dad, or no father figure at all, there are simply things that all men should know. Like walking into the woods for the first time, there are survival techniques that only the Word of God can relate. But where to start? Most men choose to learn by discovery more than through lecture, so we start in the woods. Have you ever wanted a quick reference for the Bible to take you on a journey of what exactly it takes to be a man in this world? What about one that even provides survival techniques for a life in the wilderness? Now put it to rhyme...that is The Trail in the Woods. How can fathers give something to tomorrow’s future men that they, themselves, may have never received? More importantly, how will men receive it if they simply aren’t intrigued by the subject of faith and/or are intimidated by the sheer volume of the Bible? As I have often heard the question, “Where do I start to read the Bible?” I have always wanted to answer this question with an invitation: “Would you like to go hunting?” The Trail was designed as a gift to sons to watermark their journey of manhood. This short but powerful poetic read includes a fatherly blessing to be read over sons, or to be received as one. Nothing can replace the word of God, but The Trail is designed to point men to the only resource that answers the question: “Who am I, and what must I know as I daily enter the woods of this life?” Equal parts literary and earthy, this book engages both the academic as well as the outdoorsman in all of us while directing us to the best reference on manhood the world has ever known: it’s Creator. www.thetrailinthewoods.com

An invitation to eavesdrop on a remarkable group of women who in their eighth and ninth decades reflect with candor and insight on the common threads in their well-lived lives The Wisdom Trail follows the life trajectories of extraordinary women, now in their seventies and eighties, who share to a remarkable extent a set of qualities that produced their successful lives. The vital women whose voices are captured in this book look back with well-earned perspective on the crises and opportunities, the decisions and accidents that marked their varied but ultimately satisfying paths. In listening to the lively and candid recollections of these women, Janet Lieberman and Julie Hungar offer stories that have value for women and men alike. From the heyday of Good Housekeeping-the era of the silent majority-to World War II, when the absence of men at home set a new measure of independence for women, through the sexual revolution and the civil rights and women's movements, these women have accumulated powerful stories that address the essential facets of women's lives: family, work, and love. As Lieberman and Hungar lead readers along The Wisdom Trail, they identify a set of characteristics these women share that has relevance for men and women of all generations, and which make them worth pondering and reflecting on today. Flexible pragmatism gave them the ability to maneuver their way around constraints that at the time appeared insurmountable. Deep personal courage enabled them to leap into risky personal career decisions and face down bias at home and in the workplace. All of them displayed the love and care to form and nourish deeply satisfying relationships. Their capstone quality was a lifetime commitment to serving the community and the world beyond. The Wisdom Trail is a journey into a world where women share their triumphs and their tragedies with equal parts generosity and instruction. It is also an examination of the arc of American life-from hardship to boon years-and the effect that has had on the character of women and their families. The value of the lessons contained in The Wisdom Trail is perhaps never more useful than it is today as women continue to struggle with balancing work and home and all Americans face the challenge of doing more with less.

2020 Banff Mountain Book Competition Finalist in Adventure Travel In Journeys North, legendary trail angel, thru hiker, and former PCTA board member Barney Scout Mann spins a compelling tale of six hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2007 as they walk from Mexico to Canada. This ensemble story unfolds as these half-dozen hikers--including Barney and his wife, Sandy--trod north, slowly forming relationships and revealing their deepest secrets and aspirations. They face a once-in-a-generation drought and early severe winter storms that test their will in this bare-knuckled adventure. In fact, only a third of all the hikers who set out on the trail that year would finish. As the group approaches Canada, a storm rages. How will these very different hikers, ranging in age, gender, and background, respond to the hardship and suffering ahead of them? Can they all make the final 60-mile push through freezing temperatures, sleet, and snow, or will some reach their breaking point? Journeys North is a story of grit, compassion, and the relationships people forge when they strive toward a common goal.

The Wisdom Trail portrays a modern-day Hero's Journey. A story about overcoming the outer and inner obstacles inherent in living in today's world, yet nonetheless complete with giants and dwarves, legendary beasts, maidens in distress, knights and sorcerers, distant, exotic lands, mysterious realms, and strange events. A tale that urges us to consider what is possible through authentic endeavour, and reminds us that wisdom can be found in the most unexpected places. Travelling the world to discover the secret to unlocking a Great Mystery, an intrepid traveler attempts to understand the significance of specific events and circumstances he has encountered through a life of learning. A collection of travel stories gleaned from a 35-year journey of discovery linked together by a common thread, this book offers the inquisitive an opportunity to follow the author on a quest for understanding and awareness as he weaves threads of insight - piecing together experiences into a narrative that has him transported from a teenager at odds with the world around him, to a man on a mission to master the wisdom that exists beyond the beyond. Turning the pages we trace the author's steps on an extraordinary journey that begins with his discontented school days, and his failed attempts at fitting in, and then sees him discovering the cornucopia of life as he encounters the sublime and bizarre as he throws himself into the deep end of the ocean of experience. From his first hitch-hiking trip to the Côte de Azur and the funshine and endless summers of the party scene of 1980's Europe, to the sophisticated environs of Stockholm and Tokyo, and then travelling the globe intent on intrepid adventure, the author invites us to join him as he uncovers new ways of dealing with the vagaries of life, and meets inspiring individuals who reveal the nature of true courage and valour. Encountering magic and mystery in the rarified air of the Tibetan plateau the author is compelled to pursue ever deeper knowledge and awareness as he begins to accept his inner calling. We accompany him as he becomes immersed in a quest to fathom a hidden dimension of possibilities; a Force that might ultimately align him with a reality that he has always sensed but never understood.
