Excerpt from With Christ, My Friend We know that Jesus Christ, our incarnate God, with His body and blood, soul and divinity, with His glorified body, is really, truly, and personally present in the Holy Eucharist. It is from the Altar that He delights most to receive our homage and adoration, to hear our prayers and to grant our petitions. We go to His Temple Home, therefore, when we can do so, to honor Him as our Saviour, to adore Him as our God, to obtain His forgiveness for our sins, to ask Him for all that we need, and to thank Him for His many blessings. We attend His services, as we ought, assist devoutly at His Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and receive Him in Holy Communion worthily and frequently. Excerpt from The Friendship of Christ I was homeless, and wretched, and starving and in peril every hour; and He offered me Shelter and comfort and food and safety; but I was ungrateful still. At last He crossed my path and with tears in His eyes He besought me saying, Come and abide With me. Let me tell you how he treats me now. He supplies all my wants. He gives me more than I dare ask. He anticipates my every need. He begs me to ask for more. He never reminds me of my past ingratitude. He never rebukes me for my past follies. Let me tell you further what I think of Him. He is as good as He is great. His love is as ardent as it is true. He is as lavish of His promises as He is faithful in keep ing them. He is as jealous of my love as He is deserving of it. I am in all things His debtor, but He bids me call Him Friend. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christ a Friend: Thirteen Discourses We cannot draw the line between those parts of our Saviour's conduct nor among those feelings which proceeded, respectively, from his divine and human natures. It is not intended that we should do so. The Saviour's own manner of speaking concerning himself is a safe and sufficient guide in speaking of him. Without explanation or hesitation he says things of himself which can be true of only one of his natures. "What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?" "No man hath ascended into heaven but he which came down from heaven, even the Son of man, which is in heaven." "Before Abraham was, I am." "And now, O Father, glorify thou me with the glory which I had with thee before the world was." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Personal Friendships Of Jesus written by J. R. Miller and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-04 with categories.

"His previous books have already gained for Dr. Miller a wide circle of admirers, to whom his latest volume will be especially welcome. The subject of the personal friendships of Jesus Christ is in itself very attractive, and it lends itself with more than usual readiness to Dr. Miller's special style of treatment. The chapters which deal with the relations between Jesus and Peter and the sons of Zebedee and particularly well worth reading, and amply supplied with the pertinent illustration and that close insight into character which always mark Dr. Miller's writings." - The Bookseller, January 8,. 1897 "All the writings of this gifted Pastor and Editor reveal spiritual mindedness, deep experiences, fruitful study of the word and the kindliest interest in others. The theme of this volume would seem to be especially congenial to its author as he shows the 'human heartedness of Jesus.' It may be there are those whose reverence for Christ as divine has made difficult the realization of his sympathy as human. It was never so with me. The larger Christ was always the nearer Christ. Infinitude that has only the dimension of distance from you is no true conception. If there be those, the author fears there are, then this little volume should be a sure corrective. Dr. Miller is peculiarly discriminating in his portrayal of those whom Jesus touched. He prompts us not to deny the fragrant offering of affectionate acknowledgment to those who have loved us - before their burial. Christ's friendships, renewed after he arose, are made to assure us that 'heaven will be a more natural place than we imagine it will be.' The final chapter, on Jesus as a Friend, is richly suggestive of the new type of friendship which Christ has introduced among men, and of the tenderness, patience, gentleness and forgiveness which are its distinctive characteristics." -Wooster Alumni Bulletin, Volume 13, 1898 "In the delightful little book entitled 'Personal Friendships of Jesus,' J. R. Miller, D. D., tells us how this yearning was met, and how the human-heartedness of Jesus shines out in his relations to his family, his disciples and other personal friends. The subject is treated with great thoroughness, including the conditions of friendship with Jesus, the principles upon which he selected his friends, his secret friends, his ministry of love to them in their sorrows, his tender farewell, the character of Jesus as a friend, and the continuation and consummation of friendship, commenced on earth, in the heavenly life. Upon this point Dr. Miller writes with greatness tenderness and beauty: 'Even at the best human friendships only begin in this life; in heaven they will reach their best and holiest possibilities. There are lives which only touch each other in this world and then separate, going their different ways, like ships that pass in the night. There will be time enough in heaven for any such faintest beginnings of friendship to be wrought out in beauty. Friendship with Jesus here touches but the shore of an infinite ocean; in heaven, unhindered, in uninterrupted fellowship, we shall be forever learning more of this love of Christ which passeth knowledge.' Many hearts that have been touched by the sorrow of parting from friends will find joy and consolation in the beautiful thoughts and cheering words of Dr. Miller." -Christian Work: Illustrated Family Newspaper, Volume 63, 1897 1. Excerpt from An Address to the Society of Friends The primitive believers were a simple and humble-minded people, whose hearts were exercised to know and to follow the direction of their Holy Leader ln the way of the cross, by surrendering all their crowns of earthly wisdom, riches, and pride, at the feet of Jesus, that all dominion, power, and praise, might be ascribed unto him, and as they kept humble, de pendent, and faithful, they were exalted' in due time, and made instruments in his holy hand for the promotion and spread of the Gospel power, by which they had been raised up out of the grave and bondage of sin, into the glorious libe1ty of the sons of God. Having tasted and seen for themselves of the goodness and mercy of God, in Christ Jesus, their Saviour, ln bringing them out of darkness into his marvellous light, they became concerned? For others, that their feet might be' turned into the same holy and living way of righteousness and peace; and, havmg been taught in the school of Christ, they were of that Spirit which taketh its kingdom by entreaty, and not by force. They were an innocent and unofl'ending people before the Lord, whom they endeavored to serve in all things, laying aside their own wills and wisdom, as carnal weapons, with which they refused to fight, lest they should be overcome by their enemies. The salvation of the soul was the end and aim of theirlives, and this they oftenisought at the1 peril, and even the sacrifice, of every earthly good. Jesus Christ, of Nazareth, who came to seek and to save that which was lost by the sacrifice 'of his own precious life, ' was their pattern, and his Spirit their direction, government, and support, in which they trusted with the dependence and confidence of little children, knowing and acknowledging that of themselves they could do nothing. Their worship was in spirit and m truth, for they Sat at the feet of Jesus, even as Mary did, and rejoiced and wondered at his gracious Words, for their attention was turned inward, where they communed with their own hearts, and were still, so that his voice could be heard preaching 1n them, the acceptable year of the Lord. Excerpt from Christ and His Friends: A Series of Revival Sermons The sermons in this volume were delivered in Hanson Place M. E. Church, Brooklyn, N. Y., during the month of January, 1895, in a series of revival meetings. It will be noted that the texts and themes are all selected from St. John's Gospel. The themes were selected some months prior to the delivery of the discourses, and such time as could be spared from the regular work of my ministry was devoted to the work of outline, Scriptural study, and the gathering of illustrative material from all sources open to me. When the time arrived, after a few hours' study during the morning of the day in which the sermon was to be delivered, it was first dictated to a stenographer, though it was afterward in the evening preached without notes. The entire thirty-one sermons were thus at last forged and delivered during that earnest campaign. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young, Vol. 3 We have an account of this lesson in St. John 13: 4 - 15. It is taught us in these words He riseth from supper, and laid aside his gar ments; and took a towel and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash his disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then occurs the incident about the objection which Peter made to letting Jesus wash his feet, and the way in which that objection was overcome. And then the story goes on thus So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, 'know ye what I have done unto you? Ye call me Master, and Lord; and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye ought also to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do, as I have done to you. This was a very surprising scene. How astonished the angels must have been when they looked upon it! They had known Jesus in heaven, before he took upon him our nature, and came into this fallen world. They had seen him in the glory which he had with the Father, before the world was. They had worshipped him in the midst of all that glory. And then, when they saw him, girded with a towel, and washing the feet of poor sinful men, whom he came from heaven to save, how surprising it must have seemed to them! And When Jesus told his disciples, that his object in doing this was to set them an example, that they should do as he had done to them, he did not mean that they should literally make a practice of washing each other's feet; but that they should show the same humility to others that he had shown to them, by being willing to do anything, however humble it might be, in order to promote their comfort and happiness. It is not the act itself, here spoken of, that Jesus teaches us to do; but the spirit of humility, in which the act was performed, that he teaches us to cultivate. We might go through the form of washing the feet of other persons, and yet feel proud and haughty all the time we were doing it. Then we should not be following the example of Jesus at all.
