The second part of Dante's Divine Comedy, following the Inferno, and preceding the Paradiso. The poem was written in the early 14th century. It is an allegory telling of the climb of Dante up the Mount of Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil, except for the last four cantos at which point Beatrice takes over as Dante's guide. Purgatory in the poem is depicted as a mountain in the Southern Hemisphere, consisting of a bottom section (Ante-Purgatory), seven levels of suffering and spiritual growth (associated with the seven deadly sins), and finally the Earthly Paradise at the top. Allegorically, the Purgatorio represents the penitent Christian life. In describing the climb Dante discusses the nature of sin, examples of vice and virtue, as well as moral issues in politics and in the Church. The poem outlines a theory that all sins arise from love - either perverted love directed towards others' harm, or deficient love, or the disordered or excessive love of good things.

In The Discipline of the Mountain Daniel Berrigan offers "ways of imagining our plight" through the poetic vision of Dante's Purgatorio. There can be found "a faithful vision, an alternative, a truthful image of God, of ourselves, of history." Berrigan employs free, poetic adaptation of the original--its themes, moods, discourses, encounters--with a prose commentary relating the text to political-moral issues of the present day. With its themes of lust and hatred, religious strife and ecclesiastical corruption, military power and oppression, the Purgatorio is an apt allegory of modern society. Thirteenth-century kings and princes shade into twentieth-century colonels and shahs and juntas. The Discipline of the Mountain is evocatively illustrated by Robert F. McGovern.

Purgatorio written by Dante and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-06-28 with Poetry categories.

In Purgatorio Dante, having described his journey into Hell, narrates his ascent of Mount Purgatory with Virgil, as he encounters penitents who toil through physical agonies, starvation and flames to assuage their earthly vices. Only by learning from them can he achieve his final enlightened transition to the lost Earthly Paradise at the mountain’s summit, where he meets his dead love, Beatrice, and prepares to ascend to Heaven. Depicting a realm of intense sensation and physical experience, Dante’s poem transformed the traditional Christian idea of Purgatory by showing how the free will of the aspiring soul could change wordly perversions into perfection. It is a brilliantly nuanced and moving allegory of human possibility, hope and redemption.

In the Divine Comedy Dante Alighieri takes up the theme of the journey which had been present in literature since remote times. But he does not tell of the epic deeds of legendary heroes: it is he himself, the protagonist of this great adventure; a person in flesh and blood, who takes his experience of the world and its history to the world of the dead. The poet’s message of hope is addressed to men of all times, since he with his intelligence and faith had been able to get an insight into the mysteries of the universe and contemplate God’s presence.
