more conversational and outwardly sentimental than poetry of, the collected "lyrics" here are as author says "more story without context of the musical emotions." With the accompanying photos the endeavor indeed lends itself to the idea of concept album. A bigger picture here to see?. IT TAKES RISKS ; IT'S NOT CALLED VANITY PUBLISHING FOR NOTHING. This is a companion book to "The Wanderings Of A Mind In Verse," while containing verses that are in that book there are also verses that can-not be seen as poems and therefore translate as songs. As with the companion book the verses mainly reflect life but looked at from a different perspective, as in "Lives," this looks at life through the use of a playground, contrasting the slides and round-a-bouts in relation to the issues addolesants can face in life. This I wrote in the early 1980's and was very relevant to the area of work that I was involved with at the time The Unsung Hero" was written for, and performed, at fund raising evening for Help The Hero's. I wrote the song to relate to the soldiers throughout history, and in any country of the world, who return home from war carrying the troubles of what they have seen and experienced, Those who have fought to defend their country but now, when they need help or guidance do not know where to look for it. Most of the songs bring back memories of life events or what the story was behind writing it. "Jam And Bread" is a novelty song but brings back powerful memories of the day my 9 year old grandson said, "Write a song granddad that I can sing with you." It was written, words and music in less than 15 minutes, and with 30 minutes was being sung by myself with my grandson joining in on the chorus which he had memorised. "The Jangly Bits," although the title sounds light hearted I wrote in tribute to a very good friend of mine who had accompanied me, for over 30 years, he had indeed taught me to play guitar. The song relates to the last 2 nights we played prior to his passing. I would like to thank each of you who have read the book and I hope that I have given pleasure to you. The notes relating to each song refer to settings used on a Yamaha PSR - S 550.

From the author of The Changing Mind and The Organized Mind comes a New York Times bestseller that unravels the mystery of our perennial love affair with music ***** 'What do the music of Bach, Depeche Mode and John Cage fundamentally have in common?' Music is an obsession at the heart of human nature, even more fundamental to our species than language. From Mozart to the Beatles, neuroscientist, psychologist and internationally-bestselling author Daniel Levitin reveals the role of music in human evolution, shows how our musical preferences begin to form even before we are born and explains why music can offer such an emotional experience. In This Is Your Brain On Music Levitin offers nothing less than a new way to understand music, and what it can teach us about ourselves. ***** 'Music seems to have an almost wilful, evasive quality, defying simple explanation, so that the more we find out, the more there is to know . . . Daniel Levitin's book is an eloquent and poetic exploration of this paradox' Sting 'You'll never hear music in the same way again' Classic FM magazine 'Music, Levitin argues, is not a decadent modern diversion but something of fundamental importance to the history of human development' Literary Review

"No words can explain enlightenment," says the seventh-century Zen classic Xin Ming, or "Song of Mind," yet, paradoxically, this poem is a masterpiece of expressing the inexpressible. In his commentary on it, Chan Master Sheng Yen takes a practical approach, opening up the language of the Xin Ming to show students how to approach meditation, how to deal with problems that arise in their spiritual practice, and how to accomplish the imperative task of integrating this practice into every aspect of one's life. "True understanding comes only with direct experience," according to Master Sheng Yen. "These lectures, the Buddhist sutras, songs, poems, and commentaries are useful only insofar as they encourage you to practice and incorporate the Dharma [teachings] into your daily life." The book takes the form of a week-long retreat with Master Sheng Yen, with each chapter in the form of an evening talk given on a particular section of the "Song of Mind" text—giving this book a far more intimate and accessible feel than most commentaries on Zen texts and creating a feeling of being right there with the master as he brings the text to life.

Love Song for the Life of the Mind develops the view of comedy that, the author argues, would have been set out in Aristotle's missing second book of Poetics. As such it is both a philosophical and a historical argument about Aristotle; and the theory of comedy it elucidates is meant to be trans-historically and trans-culturally accurate.

As the last leader of the Chartist movement, Ernest Charles Jones (1819-69) is a significant historical figure, but he is just as well-known for his political verse. His prison-composed epic The New World lays claim to being the first poetic exploration of Marxist historical materialism, and his caustic short lyric ‘The Song of the Low’ appears in most modern anthologies of Victorian poetry. Despite the prominence of Jones’s verse in Labour history circles, and several major inclusions in critical discussions of working-class Victorian literature, this volume represents the first full-length study of his poetry. Through close analysis and careful contextualization, this work traces Jones’s poetic development from his early German and British Romantic influences through his radicalization, imprisonment, and years of leadership. The poetry of this complex and controversial figure is here fully mapped for the first time.
