Excerpt from With the Indians in the Rockies He was destined never to finish the task. An old bullet wound in his lung had always kept him in poor health, and when, in the winter of 188 5, he contracted pneumonia, the end was quick. His last request was that I would put his notes in shape for pub lication. This I have done to the best of my ability in my own old age; how well I have done it is for the reader to judge. Excerpt from Indian Days in the Canadian Rockies The American Indians once figured in the fore ground Of our history. Their numbers were large enough to command respect, and their martial ardour inspired fear in all who ventured uninvited across their frontiers in the limitless expanses of the new world. Those were the days Of Old, the days of early borderlands where everyone held his fate in his hands as a frail gift of Providence, the days Of the coureurs-des-bois, the explorers and the fur traders the real Indian days. Excerpt from Knocking Round the Rockies: Illustrated The initial point of all expeditions, large and small, into the moun tains was, and remains, the city of Denver, the capital of Colorado, and a marvellous town. That gold existed in the Rocky Mountains has been certainly known since the earliest exploration of them; it is one of the most curious facts about the Whole matter, indeed, that the utilization of this wealth did not begin sooner. About 1803, for instance, a Kentuckian named James Pursley, while travelling with a band of Indians into the moun tains which give birth to the La Platte, Arkansaw, etc., etc. (the locality seems to have been near Mount Lincoln), found gold there, and car ried some of the virgin mineral in his Shot-pouch for months. Other wanderers reported it at various times, according to tradition, but no publicity was given to the fact, SO that the real history of the mining excitement in the lofty mid-continent ranges, and the annals of Denver, their metropolis, begin with the summer of 1858, and are associated with the name Of W. Green Russell. This gentleman was a Georgian, who had learned the delights of gold-digging where the gentle Etowah rolls enticing sands through the charming gorges of the Blue Ridge. When the gold excitement of the Pacific coast aroused the country he started Westward, taking his course up the Arkansas, passing along the eastern base of Pike's Peak, and so northward to the emigrant trail. He observed at that time what seemed to him indications of gold-gravel, but did not pause to verify it. When, therefore, a few years later, he retraced his steps, he halted long enough in Colorado to assure himself Of the richness of its bars, and then pro ceeded homeward to organize a party to return with him to this point. Two brothers, some friends, and a few Cherokee Indians joined him.* The Cherokees had previously been through here searching a promised land for their tribe, and had themselves reported gold. They concluded to remain in the Indian Territory, but left their name attached to several springs, mountains. Excerpt from In the Heart of the Rockies: A Story of Adventure in Colorado Paid several visits to the country in 1878 and the following years in quest of sport, and was the first white man to penetrate the recesses of the higher mountains. At that time the Indians had almost entirely deserted the country. For the details of the dangers and difficulties of the passage through the canons I am indebted to the official report of Major Powell, published by the United States govern. Excerpt from The Rockies of Canada Fishing, and of that very interesting tribe, the Stony Indians. The work is illustrated by photogravure and half tone plates from original photographs by the author. In books where natural scenery makes an important part, good photographs give a clearer idea of the country than word painting, however faithful, and with the knowledge of this fact no pains have been spared to get the best possible effect in every detail. The illustrations are selected from a large collection, and represent many toilsome climbs and foot jour neys, made under the heavy and sometimes danger ous burden of a camera, when repeated visits to favoured Spots year after year have not always met with success, and, owing to smoke of forest fires, or the accident of clouds and storm, there was often no reward for patient effort. Two maps accompany the text; one a special contour map which shows the details of the country near Lake Louise, and the other a general map of the Rocky Mountains compiled from all the best maps hitherto published, supplemented by several recent sketches. Excerpt from Hidden Heroes of the RockiesOne of these boys, Isaac K. Russell, after a series of adventures as an American volunteer in the Philippines, returned to enter the field of journalism. In this capacity he was working when Senator William A. Clark of Montana built his railroad connecting Salt Lake City with Los Angeles. On its completion the builder decided to dedicate his new road, by giving a free Pullman trip to all of the old pioneers who had helped to blaze the hard trail through sage and sand over which the rails had now been laid.At that time the question, what white man had first dared to take this desert trail, became a burning one. Mr. Russel], assigned the interesting work of writing up the excursion for the newspaper he represented, set out earnestly to gather from the best sources at hand this tale of the trail blazing through our Southwest.Hardly had his account come from the press before there appeared at his door an old mountaineer clad in buckskin, odorous of a thousand bonfires. This veteran of the Rockies came to make his protest; the story, be asserted.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Then and Now; Or Thirty-Six Years in the Rockies: Personal Reminiscences of Some of the First Pioneers of the State of Montana, Indians and Indian Wars, the Past and Present of the Rocky Mountain Country, 1864-1900 It may not be out of place to explain how this book came to find its way into print. It was written for my little daughter, in the form of letters at various times, and not intended for publication, but many friends after reading them insisted that they should be published. One said: You must not wait until you are dead before these letters are given to the world. As my desire is, by the grace of God, to live many years yet, I now present these letters to the reader, supplemented by others from old time friends who braved the perils and dangers of pioneer life; and as they are intended to be a part of the history of this great state, care has been taken to keep strictly to the truth.
