Women Can T Paint written by Helen Gørrill and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-06 with Art categories.

In 2013 Georg Baselitz declared that 'women don't paint very well'. Whilst shocking, his comments reveal what Helen Gørrill argues is prolific discrimination in the artworld. In a groundbreaking study of gender and value, Gørrill proves that there are few aesthetic differences in men and women's painting, but that men's art is valued at up to 80 per cent more than women's. Indeed, the power of masculinity is such that when men sign their work it goes up in value, yet when women sign their work it goes down. Museums, the author attests, are also complicit in this vicious cycle as they collect tokenist female artwork which impinges upon its artists' market value. An essential text for students and teachers, Gørrill's book is provocative and challenges existing methodologies whilst introducing shocking evidence. She proves how the price of being a woman impacts upon all forms of artistic currency, be it social, cultural or economic and in the vanguard of the 'Me Too' movement calls for the artworld to take action.

Women Framing Hair written by Heather Hanna and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-13 with Art categories.

This book explores the complex and enigmatic motif of hair in the work of five contemporary women artists, Chrystl Rijkeboer, Alice Maher, Annegret Soltau, Kathy Prendergast and Ellen Gallagher, from the late 1970s to the present. It investigates why hair is such a productive and resonant site of meaning, how it is suggestive of, and responds to, serial strategies, and why it appears to be of particular significance to women who are artists. It explores the implications of hair as an embodied material, its role as a haptic metaphor of the life cycle, and what might be seen as a darker, more liminal side of hair as a site of excess and body waste, and its ability to represent trauma and ‘wounding’. It also discusses some of the divergent histories of hair as a rich marker of identity in cultural discourses of beauty, myth and femininity, and as a symbol of status and power. Informed by a range of theoretical approaches, this book draws on Julia Kristeva’s theorizations of the abject, Hélène Cixous’s notion of écriture feminine, and a Deleuzian consideration of difference.

I created this art series inspired by women, women in my life, to all women who are living, women who are no longer here, women who I have never met, and women who I've seen in my dreams. This ART SERIES: The Essence of Women, is about celebrating all women. This art aims to focus on us, as women, and on what we do in those silent and in between moments of our lives. Those moments when we are arriving, departing, just waiting, just being, just starting, just finishing... These moments are what I would analogize in the written word as the spaces in between words. I recognize that just because those spaces are silent, that does not mean they don't exist. The spaces are still there and matter to the absolute harmony of the writing itself. Just like us, as women matter, by merely just being there, wherever we are. The art in this art series aims to exemplify the idea that we as women exist and matter regardless of what we do. We are important merely because of our presence. We matter and contribute JUST BY BEING! I think I love women so much because of my mother. I lost my mother at an early age when my father kidnapped me. As a result, I lost touch with my mother for a number of years. Until finally, I reconnected with her for a brief moment when I was thirteen. Sadly, she disappeared in a flood shortly after and I never saw her again. This art series is my gift to her, and to all women and mothers in the world. With this art, I would like to express my belief that women matter simply because of who we are. I believe that love is the key to saving us all from grief. My friends, lets cherish those people we love! Lets love and appreciate our mothers, and not only the mothers of our species, but all mothers, including the earth, even as a metaphor for all motherhood. For after all, if we are it is through the MOTHER, that we find the gift of life. Grace Divine

The Female Body In The Looking Glass

The Female Body In The Looking Glass written by Basia Sliwinska and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-29 with Art categories.

In his theory of the 'mirror stage', the psychoanalyst and psychiatrist Jacques Lacan argued that the female body is defined by its lack of male attributes. Within this framework, he described female sexuality primarily as an absence, and assumed female subordination to the male gaze. However, what happens if one follows Jean Baudrillard's advice to 'swallow the mirror' and go through the 'looking-glass' to explore the reflections and realities that we encounter in the cultural mirror, which reflects the culture in question: its norms, ideals and values? What if the beautiful is inverted and becomes ugly; and the ugly is considered beautiful or shape-shifts into something conventionally thought of as beautiful? These are the fundamental questions that Basia Sliwinska poses in this important new enquiry into gender identity and the politics of vision in contemporary women's art.Through an innovative discussion of the mirror as a metaphor, Sliwinska reveals how the post-1989 practices of woman artists from both sides of the former Iron Curtain - such as Joanna Rajkowska, Marina Abramovic, Boryana Rossa, Natalia LL and Anetta Mona Chisa and Lucia Tkacova - go beyond gender binaries and instead embrace otherness and difference by playing with visual tropes of femininity. Their provocative works offer alternative representations of the female body to those seen in the cultural mirror. Their art challenges and deconstructs patriarchal representations of the social and cultural 'other', associated with visual tropes of femininity such as Alice in Wonderland, Venus and Medusa. The Female Body in the Looking-Glass makes a refreshing, radical intervention into art theory and cultural studies by offering new theoretical concepts such as 'the mirror' and 'genderland' (inspired by Alice's adventures in Wonderland) as critical tools with which we can analyse and explain recent developments in women's art.
