Excerpt from The Position of Women in Indian Life Wondered whether I could do anything to awaken my Indian sisters from their lethargy of ages, to enable them to take their proper place in Indian public life. I therefore tried to learn what I could from the Western systems - British, Continental and American - which came under my observation, feeling strongly that I owed it to my sisters in India to give them the benefit of the impressions gathered during my travels on matters peculiarly affecting the position of women. Some of the experience thus gained I was anxious to lay before my countrywomen, with a view to receive opinions and contributions from all parts of India, and with the hope that some of the Western organizations might be adapted to the conditions of my native land. But here I met with a great difficulty, which at first appeared almost insuperable. It is one thing to be impressed with the position of women in Western public life and with their useful organizations, but it is quite another thing to be able to convey such impressions to others who have not been out of India at all. Not only accurate information, direct and collateral, was wanted, but it was necessary to edit such facts carefully and in good style, with a view to Indian requirements and with particular refer ence to the Hindu caste system. I therefore saw at once that I needed the co-operation of an able and well-informed literary man, who could handle the subject with Special knowledge ao. Excerpt from Working Life of Women in the Seventeenth Century The investigation, whose conclusions are partly described in the following treatise, was undertaken with a view to discovering the actual circumstances of women's lives in the Seventeenth Century. It is perhaps impossible to divest historical enquiry from all personal bias, but in this case the bias has simply consisted in a conviction that the conditions under which the obscure mass of Women live and fulfil their duties as human beings, have a vital influence upon the destinies of the human race, and that a little knowledge of what these conditions have actually been in the past will be of more value to the sociologist than many volumes of carefully elaborated theory based on abstract ideas. The theories with which I began this work of investigation as to the position occupied by women in a former social organisation have been abandoned, and have been replaced by others, which though still only held tentatively have at least the merit of resting solely on ascertained fact. If these theories should in turn have to be dis carded when a deeper understanding of history becomes possible, yet the picture of human life presented in the following pages will not entirely lose its value. Excerpt from 1960 Seminar on Participation of Women in Public Life: Addis Ababa, 12 to 23 December, 1960 Bl. Discrimination in Opportunities for education for girls and boys was deplored. In some countries important gaps existed at the primary level; in rural areas in particular, girls were frequently kept at home to assist with the work in the house and on the farm. Often it was considered socially undesirable for girls to travel from their homes to school, and even in cases where they attended primary school for a year or two they were taken away by their parents in order to enter into early marriages. In some communities a prospective bridegroom had the right to select the curriculum for his future bride. These situations also prevented girls from proceeding to secondary schools. The cost of higher education was stressed as an important factor restricting its availability to both boys and girls, but more particularly to girls. It was pointed out that if more numerous and varied posts for girls with higher education were developed, this would encourage parents to permit them to continue their studies. The view was expressed that an important aspect of university education was the fact that it furnished a training in social responsibility but this training was wasted unless graduates were given the opportunity of assuming responsibilities after graduation. In the words of one participant, the educated woman who does not take responsibility is an expensive addition to society.
