Women and girls are now becoming addicted at greater rates than ever before, and until very recently women in recovery were dependent on treatment models based solely on work with men. Harvard addiction and trauma expert Lisa M. Najavits offers this step-by-step program to help women overcome the often-overlooked problems associated with their drug and alcohol addictions, such as body image, trauma and violence, relationships, stress, and thrill-seeking. She explores how women differ from men in their addiction and recovery, and adapts this information to help you embark on your journey to healing. A chapter on co-occurring emotional problems allows you to evaluate whether you have any of the key disorders common among women with addiction, such as depression, post-traumatic stress, eating disorders, or phobias. With this strengths-building workbook, begin to come to terms with your personal addiction story. Healing exercises in four areas--feelings, beliefs, action, and relationships--help women build self-respect. Exercises include "Listen to That Small Quiet Voice," "Extreme Self-Care," "Self-Soothing," "Become Friends with Women," "Rethink," "Take Charge," "Share Responsibility," and "Mourn." In addition to these exercises and techniques, the book offers valuable resources of recovery support information.

Accompanying China’s economic reform and open-door policy in 1978, illicit drug use emerged in the late 1980s, and gradually developed into a serious social problem. Heroin was the dominant illicit drug consumed in the new drug epidemic, and the number of female heroin users has increased rapidly in the country. While heroin use in China is soaring, little is known about women’s heroin use in the context of China’s rapidly changing society. Using intensive interviews with 131 female heroin users, this book explores the careers of female heroin users in China under changing social contexts in the reform era. It investigates the impacts of sociological and individual factors on women’s heroin use in each developing stage of their drug use careers. It also examines the social consequences of women’s heroin use by looking at connections between women’s heroin use and criminality, and the change in women’s social relations after heroin use. Lastly, the book analyzes and ascertains the impact of current narcotics control policies on women’s drug use careers. This groundbreaking book has important policy implications for both China and the international society in the context of increasing global concern about women’s substance abuse.

Women Sex And Addiction written by Charlotte Kasl and has been published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-15 with Self-Help categories.

For most women, sexually addictive and sexually codependent behavior are intertwined. Sexually codependent behavior reflects basic female conditioning in our society—we are taught that a woman's power is in her sexuality, yet her sexuality is often controlled by men. Thus, sex can easily become a basic form of barter: it is the price many women pay for love and the illusion of security. The addicted woman, seeking a sense of personal power and an escape from pain, may use sex and romance as a high or as a way to feel in control, just as an alcoholic uses alcohol. Either way, however, sex never'satisfies her longing for love and self-worth. Combining remarkably candid case histories with provocative cultural analyses, Dr. Charlotte Kasl dramatically evokes both the experience of addiction and the process of recovery. She illuminates the insidious relationship between adult addiction and early abuse or neglect and explores the connections between all forms of addiction. Her guide to recovery is backed by a life-affirming discussion of healthy love and spiritual awareness. With this wise, compassionate book, women will learn to experience their sexuality as a source of love and positive power, and sex as an expression that honors the soul as well as the body.

A Step-by-Step Guide to a Powerful Process for Healing Women with Addiction While there is a wealth of material available for the treatment of addiction, most of the information is based on research focused on men-not women. Helping Women Recover fills this void and offers a program specifically designed to meet the unique needs of women who are addicted to alcohol and other drugs. The Helping Women Recover program offers counselors, mental health professionals, and program administrators the tools they need to implement this healing process in group therapy settings or with individual clients. "A clear and comprehensive guide. Covington provides addiction professionals with a precise and detailed curriculum based on her knowledge, caring, and years of experience addressing the special needs of addicted women."—Monessa Overby, vice president, clinical services, Betty Ford Center "An excellent tool for integrating women's issues with relapse prevention therapy. Helping Women Recover is practical, easy to use, and helps guide clinicians to work on the deeper recovery issues with addicted women."—Terence T. Gorski, founder, clinical director, National Relapse Prevention Certification School "A well-written, thorough, eminently practical, and wise curriculum for all women-therapists and clients, teachers and students. She combines a deep understanding of female psychology with the realities of male-oriented culture to create a supportive model that emphasizes positive self-exploration and discovery. Covington provides a detailed teaching map-what to say, when, and why. Novice and experienced counselors can run with this outstanding plan. Underlying the text is the assurance that the author understands women, what safety means to them, how important it is as a base for healing, and how to achieve it."—Stephanie Brown, director, The Addictions Institute and author of Treating Alcoholism "A comprehensive, practical, and extraordinarily valuable guide for anyone involved in creating, implementing, or facilitating women's treatment programs."—Janet L. Surrey, founding scholar, Jean Baker Miller Training Institute, Stone Center, Wellesley College "Helping Women Recover is vital to our work with the chemically dependent female-and there is no one who understands gender-specific work better than Stephanie Covington!" —Claudia Black, author of It Will Never Happen to Me "Helping Women Recover is an exciting curriculum for women in which the facilitator is given clear and detailed instructions. To participate in these sessions would be a healing and revealing experience."—Anne Geller, associate professor of clinical medicine, Columbia University and past president, American Society of Addiction Medicine

Addicted To Rehab written by Allison McKim and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-03 with Social Science categories.

After decades of the American “war on drugs” and relentless prison expansion, political officials are finally challenging mass incarceration. Many point to an apparently promising solution to reduce the prison population: addiction treatment. In Addicted to Rehab, Bard College sociologist Allison McKim gives an in-depth and innovative ethnographic account of two such rehab programs for women, one located in the criminal justice system and one located in the private healthcare system—two very different ways of defining and treating addiction. McKim’s book shows how addiction rehab reflects the race, class, and gender politics of the punitive turn. As a result, addiction has become a racialized category that has reorganized the link between punishment and welfare provision. While reformers hope that treatment will offer an alternative to punishment and help women, McKim argues that the framework of addiction further stigmatizes criminalized women and undermines our capacity to challenge gendered subordination. Her study ultimately reveals a two-tiered system, bifurcated by race and class.
