Globalisation is a great generator of jobs, but one that does not protect those at the bottom of the labour supply chain. Saniye Dedeoglu's compelling study of women workers in Istanbul's garment industry shows exactly how globalisation has affected women engaged in insecure, invisible and low or unpaid work. She reveals how industries have adapted their labour demands to make use of local female labour supplies, and highlights the strategies and responses that have evolved in response to contemporary changes in global industrial production in Turkey. Dedeoglu shows how production for global markets has seeped into local labour markets, contributing to a culture of work which is informal and so throws up the critical question of what it means to be a woman in today's globalised society. Some of the important characteristics of this phenomenon are the increasing interconnectedness between societies as a result of the rapid development of communications and growing trade, the invention of new technologies, increased capital mobility and the growing importance of transnational corporations (McGrew 2005: 22). It became increasingly clear that globalization was, from the beginning, a process based on gender discrimination, which meant it affected men and women differently in an economic, social and cultural sense. Global markets, free production zones, and new growth strategies make women the victims of development programmes. In Thailand, Bangladesh, Mexico, China and in many areas of the so-called “Third World”, western capital exploits the cheapest workforce. The governments there have offered their young women to the international capital and were willing to create so-called “free production zones” in which the capital has great freedom. Free production zones are being strongly criticised, because foreign companies do not need to respect any labour protection laws in these areas, and have plenty of room to manoeuvre and to pursue their interests. Critics come too, because the companies don’t need to consider the damage to the environment (Kümbetoglu/Caga 2001: 58).

How have attempts to integrate Turkish agriculture into the global economy impacted rural populations? This book reveals the extent to which the increasingly authoritarian political regime in Turkey, and the neoliberal economy, impacts minority ethnic groups and women. The tomato industry in Turkey has the highest export rate amongst fresh and processed fruit and vegetables. But Emine Erdogan shows here that global production is gendered, relying on the labour of unpaid or poorly paid women and based on a system of what she calls 'intersectional patriarchy'. The book is based on participant observation and interviews to foreground the stories of the those involved in production, including local rural workers, Kurdish seasonal migrant workers, women factory workers and factory managers, as well as the landowning families. This provides a detailed picture of the transformation of rural Turkey and the inequalities of gender, class, ethnicity and age. A detailed ethnographic account, the book in unique in providing an intersectional and feminist analysis on processes of capitalization.

Turkey has experienced growth in both the population and the workforce. However, female participation in the workforce in Turkey is extremely low, largely due to financial dependency and lack of higher education. The authors argue that greater research is needed to improve the economic position of women throughout the country, and this remains a challenge that must be fixed both culturally and socioeconomically.
