Excerpt from Beautiful Stories About Children Charles Dickens was'one of the greatest among the many story-writers of the Victorian age; that 18, the middle and latter part of the Nine teenth Century, when Victoria was Queen of Great Britain. Perhaps he was the greatest of them all for now, a generation after he passed away, more people read the stories of Dickens than those by any other author of that period. In those wonderful writings are found many pic tures of child-life connected with the plan of the novels or stories. These child-stories have been taken out of their connections and are told by themselves in this volume. Excerpt from The Strange Little Girl: A Story for Children Questions Eline asked, and the answers seldom satisfied her, for they never seemed to tell her everything. Every time one of the travelers left the palace to return on his journey there seemed to be a look of appeal in his eyes, an appeal which only Eline seemed to see, and which made her wish to follow them for the very love that shone in the kind faces of these strangers - stran gers who told the children stories of things they loved of wonderful fairy worlds where they were not as in the palace; of worlds where Eline seemed to have traveled many times, long, long ago. Excerpt from Bible Stories for Children There was once a great storm of rain that covered the earth with a flood; first the fields and valleys were covered, and then the high hills, and last of all the mountains. All the nations who have lived Since have some story of this flood. Even the savage tribes in far-away lands have their stories of how the earth was once covered with water. There is an old Chaldean story about a man who once built a vessel in which he was saved from drowning; and in the vessel with him were many different animals and birds. Another singular story is told of a battle between the sea and the earth. In this fight the sea wins the day, and the earth is covered by the water. There is also a Phrygian story of a man named Enos who foresaw that there was to come a great rain; and it is said that he wept and prayed for his people, because of the terrible flood that was coming upon them. A curious medal has been found that tells about this flood, and upon it is a picture of a square-shaped vessel This is floating upon the water, and has the picture of a man and woman standing within it. There are two birds in the picture; one of them is perched on top of the vessel and the other is flying toward it, with a branch in his mouth. From the Bible we have our story of the Flood, and it is one of the most interesting which we find in the sacred Book. Excerpt from Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know This collection of tales, gathered from the rich literature of the childhood of the world, or from the books of the few modern men who have found the key of that wonderful world, is put forth not only without apology, butwith the hope that it may widen the demand for these charming reports of a world in which the truths of our working world are loyally upheld, while its hard facts are quietly but authoritatively dismissed from attention. The widest interpretation has been given to the fairy tale, so as to include many of those classic romances of childhood in which no fairy appears, but which are invested with the air and are permeated with the glorious freedom of fairy land. And the great boughs arched over like the roof of some grand cathedral; and the wind made music there; and the light played in and out among the leaves, leaping through the green windows, chas ing the wind. When the wind blew through the leaves, in came the light; and the wind shouted out, and the light laughed; and then the birds sang as if they were play mates too; and the children laughed, enjoy ing the forest pleasures. And the forest was so full of all sweet sounds, - the glad voices of happy creatures! Sometimes a wood-pigeon would Whisper coaxingly from the thickest part of the beech-trees, inviting them to come into the forest depths; and. Excerpt from Good Stories for Great Holidays, Arranged for Story-Telling and Reading Aloud and for the Children's Own Reading This volume, though intended also for the children's own reading and for reading aloud, is especially planned for story-telling. The latter is a delightful way of arousing a gladsome holiday spirit, and of showing the inner meanings of different holidays. As stories used for this purpose are scattered through many volumes, and as they are not always in the concrete form required for story-telling, I have endeavored to bring together myths, legends, tales, and historical stories suitable to holiday occasions. There are here collected one hundred and twenty stories for seventeen holidays - stories grave, gay, humorous, or fanciful; also some that are spiritual in feeling, and others that give the delicious thrill of horror so craved by boys and girls at Halloween time. The range of selection is wide, and touches, all sides of wholesome boy and girl nature, and the tales have the power to arouse an appropriate holiday spirit. As far as possible the stories are presented in their original form. When, however, they are too long for inclusion, or too loose in structure for story-telling purposes, they are adapted. Adapted stories are of two sorts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Soap-Bubble Stories: For Children The old Church stood on a high plateau overlooking the lake. It jutted out so far, on its great rock, that it seemed to overhang the precipice; and as the neighbours walked upon the terrace on Sundays, and enjoyed the shade of the row of plane trees, they could look down over the low walls of the Churchyard almost into the chimneys of the wooden houses clustering below. There were wide stone seats on the terrace, grey and worn by the weather, and by the generations of children who had played round them; and here the mothers and grandmothers, with their distaffs in their hands, loved to collect on summer evenings.
