Excerpt from Our Vanishing Forests It is time we balanced accounts with our forest. It is time we became growers as well as users of wood. It is time we acquired something of the forestry sense of the provident folk of the old world -the instinct to protect the woods, to plant a tree where no more valuable plant will grow. It is time we paid heed to our idle acres - that we restored woods, industries, and people on the large part of our soil which lacks them all. Excerpt from Wood-Using Industries: Of New York New York is especially favored among the States climatically' and otherwise for the production of forests. Favorable condition's of rain fall and. Soil for splendid forest development exist throughout the State. It is now known that every acre in the forest areas, where there is any soil whatever, will ultimately produce good forests. There is no reason why the Adirondacks should not eventually be covered with as fine a forest as can now be found anywhere in the Black, Forest or other forest regions in Europe. Again, market conditions are unexcelled. The forest sections of the State are well equipped with streams and are easily accessible by rail. Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 1: October, 1902 If the inhabitants of Germany should leave their country it would be all grown up with woods within a century. Since there would be nobody to use them, the soil would be enriched and the woods would not only increase in size, but in productive power. If, however, the people returned again and made just as large drafts as before for wood, litter and pasturage, the wood lands, even with the best forest management, would again not only be reduced in size, but also become less fertile. Forests form and thrive best where there are no people and hence no forestry, and those are perfectly justified who say Formerly we had no forestry science and enough wood now we have that science, but no wood. One could say with the same justice Those people are health ier who do not need a physician than those who do. But it would not follow that the physicians are to be blamed for the diseases. There would be no physicians if there were no diseases, and no forestry science without deficiency in wood supplies. This science is only a child of necessity or need, and need is therefore its natural concomitant hence the phrase should be: We have now a forestry science because we have a dearth of wood. Forestry, however, does not offer any nostrums and can do nothing against the course of nature. The celebrated physician Verdey said: The good physician lets people die; the poor one kills them. With the same right one can say the good for ester allows the most perfect forests to become less so the poor one spoils them. That is to say, just as the good physician can not hinder that men die because that is the course of nature, so the best forester cannot hinder that the forests, which came to us from past times, become less now they are being utilized. Excerpt from The School Book of Forestry Our forests, with their billions of trees, are the backbone of agriculture, the skeleton of lum bering, and the heart of industry. Even now, in spite of their depletion, they are the cream of our natural resources. They furnish wood for the nation, pasture for thousands of cattle and sheep, and water supply for countless cities and farms. They are the dominions of wildlife. Millions of birds, game animals, and fish live in the forests and the forest streams. The time is coming when our forests will be the greatest playgrounds of America. It is necessary that we preserve, protect, and expandour timber lands. By so doing we shall provide for the needs of future generations. Excerpt from American Forest Trees The commercial timbers of this country are divided into two classes, hardwoods and softwoods. The division is for convenience, and is sanctioned by custom, but it is not based on the actual hardness and softness of the different woods. The division has, however, a scientific basis founded on the mechanical structures of the two classes of woods, and there is little disagreement among either those who use forest products or manufacture them, or those who investigate the actual structure of the woods themselves, as to which belong in the hardwood and which in the softwood class. Excerpt from The Timber Trees, Timber and Fancy Woods, as Also, the Forests of India and of Eastern and Southern Asia It had been suggested to me that persons whose avocations require them to attend to matters connected with the forests and With the timber trees, timber and fancy woods of India and of Eastern and Southern Asia, would find assistance in a manual indicating the botanical and vernacular names of the plants that furnish these useful products and which would also give some information regarding the characters of their different woods and their other economic products, noticing also the forests in which they grow and remarking on those plants towards the greater extension of which attention should be chiefly directed.
