Wood pellet, a modern densified biomass with strategic importance has a crucial role for the increased use of renewable energy and could make a significant contribution in reducing green house gas emissions in Europe. The wood pellet markets are booming in Europe because the importance of wood pellets in producing heat and power generation has increased over the past few decades. During the last two decades many different initiatives have been launched and policy instruments employed in different countries to develop the wood pellet sector, some of which have been successful for the development of pellet markets. This study explains the current pellet market development on the basis of policy mechanisms in the European Union (EU) and ten EU countries. The result of the study shows that different policy instruments employed at national level influenced the pellet market growth but the growth is different in different countries. The results of the study can be significantly important to the policy makers and academia to plan further research on policy development for future pellet market development.

This study examines the three major wood pellet markets in Asia: China, Japan, and South Korea. In contrast to the United States, where most wood pellets are used for residential heating with pellet stoves, a majority of the wood pellets in Asia are used for co-firing at coal-fired power plants. Our analysis indicated that Japan is the largest importer of wood pellets in Asia and that most of the pellets it consumes are used for co-firing at power plants. South Korean wood pellet imports are fairly small; however, South Korea is striving to increase its percentage of renewable energy, which could benefit the wood pellets industry. We found that China, the largest energy consumer in Asia, has an established wood pellet market. However, a majority of these wood pellets are manufactured in China, thus imports are minimal. A consistent factor in these nations is that their governments are promoting renewable energy, leading to policies that are driving demand for wood pellets. As these countries strive to meet their renewable energy targets, their wood pellet consumption is projected to grow.

This book takes the reader on a journey from the moment that raw wood material enters the factory to the final pellet consumption. It starts by reviewing biomass application and its role for the future development of renewable energies, discussing different biomass conversion methods as alternatives to direct utilization. The second chapter then comprehensively examines densification processes, with a focus on the pelleting process. Chapter three further elaborates on the pelleting process, including an overview of the pellet structure and properties, and the history of this process. The subsequent chapters provide a detailed account of the production process from raw material delivery to final distribution, addressing the chemical and physical quality, and presenting measurement methods and standards. In the final chapters, the authors describe in detail the pellet combustion process and emissions.

Developing the Global Bioeconomy: Technical, Market, and Environmental Lessons from Bioenergy brings together expertise from three IEA-Bioenergy subtasks on pyrolysis, international trade, and biorefineries to review the bioenergy sector and draw useful lessons for the full deployment of the bioeconomy. Despite the vast amount of politically driven strategies, there is little understanding on how current markets will transition towards a global bioeconomy. The question is not only how the bioeconomy can be developed, but also how it can be developed sustainably in terms of economic and environmental concerns. To answer this question, this book’s expert chapter authors seek to identify the types of biorefineries that are expected to be implemented and the types of feedstock that may be used. They also provide historical analysis of the developments of biopower and biofuel markets, integration opportunities into existing supply chains, and the conditions that would need to be created and enhanced to achieve a global biomass trade system that could support a global bioeconomy. As expectations that a future bioeconomy will rely on a series of tradable commodities, this book provides a central accounting of the state of the discussion in a multidisciplinary approach that is ideal for research and academic experts, and analysts in all areas of the bioenergy, biofuels, and bioeconomy sectors, as well as those interested in energy policy and economics. Examines the lessons learned by the bioenergy industry and how they can be applied to the full development of the bioeconomy Explores different transition strategies and how the current fossil based and future bio-based economy are intertwined Reviews the status of current biomass conversion pathways Presents an historical analysis of the developments of biopower and biofuel markets, integration opportunities into existing supply chains, and the conditions that would need to be created and enhanced to achieve a global biomass trade system

"In recent years, there has been increasing interest in sustainable energy production across the globe. This has led to increased export opportunities for North American bioenergy producers. The production of wood pellets in Canada is one industry that has greatly benefited from the increased demand for renewable energy. This paper uses analytical tools outlines by Michael Porter in his 1979 paper ?How Competitive Forces Shape Strategy? as well as his 1990 paper ?The Competitive Advantage of Nations? to examine the wood pellet manufacturing industry. These tools include Porter’s ?5 Forces Model? as well as his ?Diamond Model.? These models are used to define the competitive forces in the domestic market that provide competitive advantages / disadvantages as well to define the attributes of Canada as a nation that give it its competitive advantages / disadvantages in the global market. The overall outcome of the analysis shows that Canada can be competitive on the basis that it has abundant resources and established related and supporting industries; however there are many challenges to overcome to improve its competitive position. These challenges are associated with the access to raw materials, transportation costs and labor availability to name a few. Government can play a role to improve Canada’s position by implementing programs to improve domestic access to raw materials, infrastructure and knowledge resources. Government can also play a role to open up new markets internationally. The overarching uncertainty with regards to the long term sustainability of the wood pellet manufacturing industry pertains to emerging technologies. These new technologies will either shore up the wood pellet manufacturing industry or serve as more economical and renewable substitutes."--Leaf ii.

In the agriculture, forestry, the primary and secondary wood working industry there are considerable resources of raw materials which can only be used in a rational manner for energetic purposes. Due to requirements from the users. one of the most retinal way of utilization is to make pellets with high density and specific energy content. Making pellets of 6-8 mm diameter, their utilization in furnaces allows an almost fully automated operation with high thermal efficiency. This book describes both the theoretical and practical aspects of pellet production including material requirements and preparation, pressing technologies, quality requirements, burning properties, investments and the overall economy of pellet production.
