Though many think of the Bible as monolithic, that is, of a single point of view, the Bible is rather a compendium of viewpoints on a variety of issues. To enter the Bible is like entering any community: there may be some common beliefs, but there is also disagreement. The dialogue of the Bible therefore invites rather than inhibits further conversation. Lesbians and gay men know all too well the experience of having to leave families, friends, hometowns, and even their faith traditions to be blessed as they are. Nevertheless, many still struggle to maintain an authentic faith that also affirms and recognizes their right to joyously celebrate their biblical heritage. Chris Glaser liberates the Bible from those who would hold it hostage to an anti-gay agenda. In this inspiring and moving collection of 365 daily meditations, the Bible's good news "comes out" to meet us all with love, justice, meaning, and hope.

A Queer Film Classic on the groundbreaking 1977 documentary that profiles the lives of ordinary gay men and lesbians of different ages, races, and backgrounds. Word Is Out found a wide audience theatrically and, perhaps more importantly, had a national public-television broadcast. The film provided an intimate portrait of gay men and lesbians, and by doing so, it played a significant role in the then-nascent struggle for gay rights. It premiered six months after Anita Bryant's infamous "Save Our Children" campaign led to the repeal of a gay rights ordinance in Florida, and just as other antigay activists were beginning to copy her tactics elsewhere in the US. With its affable portrait of twenty-six gay men and women, Word Is Out offered an important counterpoint to the homophobic rhetoric that Bryant and others were spreading. Greg Youmans examines the historical, political, and aesthetic significance of this important film, situating it firmly in its late-1970s context. He also delves beneath the film's surface to explore the backstory of its making, from the complicated relationships among its six filmmakers (three men, three women) to the more than 140 video pre-interviews they conducted in their search for the perfect cast. Arsenal's Queer Film Classics series cover some of the most important and influential films about and by LGBTQ people.

Lining Out The Word written by William T. Dargan and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06-27 with Music categories.

This book, a milestone in American music scholarship, is the first to take a close look at an important and little-studied component of African American music, one that has roots in Europe, but was adapted by African American congregations and went on to have a profound influence on music of all kinds—from gospel to soul to jazz. "Lining out," also called Dr. Watts hymn singing, refers to hymns sung to a limited selection of familiar tunes, intoned a line at a time by a leader and taken up in turn by the congregation. From its origins in seventeenth-century England to the current practice of lining out among some Baptist congregations in the American South today, William Dargan’s study illuminates a unique American music genre in a richly textured narrative that stretches from Isaac Watts to Aretha Franklin and Ornette Coleman. Lining Out the Word traces the history of lining out from the time of slavery, when African American slaves adapted the practice for their own uses, blending it with other music, such as work songs. Dargan explores the role of lining out in worship and pursues the cultural implications of this practice far beyond the limits of the church, showing how African Americans wove African and European elements together to produce a powerful and unique cultural idiom. Drawing from an extraordinary range of sources—including his own fieldwork and oral sources—Dargan offers a compelling new perspective on the emergence of African American music in the United States. The Word is Out is a compilation of the winners and runners up of the Eastbourne Writes Prize 2013 competition. The result is an eclectic mix of poetry, short stories and flash fiction. The town of Eastbourne and surrounding areas has again proven that it has ample writing talent and a vivid imagination to boot. To quote this year's judge, creative writing teacher Jacq Molloy: 'Reading entries for a writing competition is like going on a blind date. There is a heightened sense of excitement about what is to come, combined with hope that the experience will unearth 'the one'. In this competition which had several categories, there was opportunity to discover gems both in the poetry and story sections.' The theme 'The Word is Out' has been written about from the most innovative angles, no story, no poem is the same, not even remotely. This year's book is a varied work that takes the reader through journeys and evokes every human emotion you can think of. Continues Molloy: ' There was plenty in the entries to enjoy as a reader and acknowledge as a judge. There was humour, suspense, poignancy, surprise and playfulness. Some writers played with language, others played with reader expectation to deliver a killer, and often unexpected ending. There were familiar subjects (love, death, obsession, old age) handled in inventive styles. Those stories and poems that stood out to achieve prizes utilised the tricks of the writer's trade such as sharp observation, characters we believed in, settings we could experience through the senses.' This year's cover is painted by accomplished local artist and art teacher Gillian Toft, whose comprehensive style lends itself excellently for book covers and illustrations. It is a pleasure to see this local book festival produce such a worthy contribution to the readers and writers world.

Out There written by Russell Ferguson and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-02-11 with Design categories.

Out There addresses the theme of cultural marginalization - the process whereby various groups are excluded from access to and participation in the dominant culture. It engages fundamental issues raised by attempts to define such concepts as mainstream, minority, and "other," and opens up new ways of thinking about culture and representation. All of the texts deal with questions of representation in the broadest sense, encompassing not just the visual but also the social and psychological aspects of cultural identity. Included are important theoretical writings by Homi Bhabha, Helene Cixous, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and Monique Wittig. Their work is juxtaposed with essays on more overtly personal themes, often autobiographical, by Gloria Anzaldua, Bell Hooks, and Richard Rodriguez, among others. This rich anthology brings together voices from many different marginalized groups - groups that are often isolated from each other as well as from the dominant culture. It joins issues of gender, race, sexual preference, and class in one forum but without imposing a false unity on the diverse cultures represented. Each piece in the book subtly changes the way every other piece is read. While several essays focus on specific issues in art, such as John Yau's piece on Wilfredo Lam in the Museum of Modern Art, or James Clifford's on collecting art, others draw from debates in literature, film, and critical theory to provide a much broader context than is usually found in work aimed at an art audience. Topics range from the functions of language to the role of public art in the city, from gay pornography to the meanings of black hair styles. Out There also includes essays by Rosalyn Deutsche, Richard Dyer, Kobena Mercer, Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, Gerald Vizenor and Simon Watney, as well as by the editors. Copublished with the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York Distributed by The MIT Press.
